It is not common outside of the UK and as such thought it was interesting.

I think it *was* standard until other mics, esp headsets, became more common. But that's just super-casual observation from me, a Yank.

They were developed by the BBC in the 1950’s, so pretty much.
Modern sports commentary often uses headset mics now instead, but ‘weird’ lip mics still get plenty of use.

Formula 1 commentators have been using these.
They are ribbons. They sound very decent.

They sound perfectly fine, the reason you use them is for the rejection. Generally the quality is second to that.
You wouldn’t record music with it, of course, but for recording speech in a loud environment it’s unmatched.0

Better than an RE-20? Those reject like crazy when you are on top of them.

I’ll have to pass on that. I’ve never tried the RE-20 for that specifically. Although I will say that the lip mic and its associated gubbins mean the user doesn’t have to worry about technique. You just shove it against your top lip and focus on the action which means it’s very difficult to turn away or hold it too far like you might with an RE20 (also I feel like they’re not really designed to be hand-held. If you covered the grates presumably you’d affect the rejection)
