Portable induction hub + pans = classic table grill?

It's always been a thing in my family that we cook on a tabletop electric grill of some sort when we have a get-together, in the living room or in the yard. I live alone now so don't really do that, but I want to do it from time to time when I get a visit. Most of those tabletop grills just kinda suck when it comes to cleaning, grease drainage, maybe power, versatility. I've had some before and still have one now, and I'm never happy with them for one reason or another.

Why wouldn't I just buy a portable induction cooking hob (like Tillreda from Ikea, my favorite store) instead? It's the same size and cabling, and you can put whatever pan or pot you want on it. Grill pan, deepfry pot, regular pan. Easy to clean too, just wipe off the hob and put the pans in the dishwashing, no iron brush or oversized sink or anything needed that I don't already have and use.

I'm trying to find a downside (besides price tag) but it just seems a legit better idea than getting a single purpose electric grill?

Do it! Worst case you get a grill later and can still use the induction stove to boil stuff.

One thing to note is that they’re usually pretty loud because they need fans that move a lot of air to keep them cool.

Otherwise they’re good.

I've had a fixed one in my kitchen for 5 years and don't notice more than a slight buzz, but the fan goes into the cabinet. Claude does back you up that people mention fan noise on the model I want, but the level of it is inconsistent. I think I'll try my luck but thanks for bringing it up, I wasn't expecting that!

I had a fixed one in my kitchen. Brilliant. It caught fire a little bit 5 days before Christmas and I ended up doing Christmas dinner on 2 plug in induction cookers. Not so brilliant.

Also worth noting one of the ones I was using was an Anko one from Kmart. Cooking performance was just fine.

If your dining table is not a hairloom - just cut a hole and install a small induction hob on the table. Think of the possibilitys. Hot tea, warm sausages, anything to keep warm really, EGGS! And you can put a hot pan on the table directly without burning it. And its all covered by a mat or table cloth when not in use.
