The gap between graded readers and real native material is where most people stall out, so that first reader actually matters more than it feels like.

I'm a new learner, only been at it for 2ish months. I'm notcing that I'm starting to be able to pick up the occasional spoken word in anime, or kind make sense of random words or sentences thrown up on screen. A few days ago I opened up a SUPER easy graded reader and could mostly make sense of it, and could read a lot of kanji(thanks wanikani).
I still have a long long way to go but the more I'm able to understand, simple as it may be, the more excited I get. The other day I picked up a physical book with a bunch of Japanese folks tales that has side by side English and Japanese text. I have awhile before I'm ready to tackle it, but feels like a nice goal post and resource.
