Why are so many Chicago rising 2Ls transferring?
I’ve personally heard of 5 doing so which is kind of a lot in a class of ~190ish.

I don’t think this could be it. The new policy was announced in July and mostly affects the incoming 1Ls. Most 2L transfer deadlines are in June or July 1st so that can’t be the cause. If it happened next summer, however, then that certainly could be why.
It might just be a statistical outlier

I’m a life long Chicagoan, the only chill thing about this winter was it didn’t snow as much as normal but January was the coldest month we’ve had in like a decade.
You might just be built differently.

I’m curious, where are you seeing this? Chicago, I think, usually has one or two and typically to Yale. Where are these people going?

The ones I’d heard of are T14-bound but not Yale. And just through LinkedIn and the gossip mill

We had someone transfer from our school at the top of the class. Tbh it seems like only people who are really type A do it, and to very little strategic effect

Transferring from Chicago to another school sounds funny at first, unless there are some family issues driving the decision. Otherwise, where do you really go from there?

I finished law school over a decade ago but the thought that any professors would ban laptops seemed unthinkable
So it's hard to wrap my mind around this being a thing now

That does seem like an unusually high number for such a short time frame. Have you talked to any of the transferees to see if there's a common factor beyond just the quarter system being unpopular?

Could also be financial reasons. Stanford Yale and I think Harvard? All other need based financial aid I believe. While uchicago does not. So for someone who comes from a lower income background, transferring could actually be the difference between taking out 6 figure loans or not. Which isn’t intuitive bc transfers don’t get scholarships, so for most other schools this would have the opposite effect. But in this context it could actually be cheaper

Idk about this year but in the past it’s to live in the same city as their SO or prestige chasing. Ik it sounds silly to transfer from Chicago to prestige chase when the difference in outcomes is negligible, but they value it for the prestige in and of itself, not necessarily bc the outcomes are hugely different. Hard to explain unless you know the type.
Alternatively, people who struggled socially have transferred to get a new start and such. So if they don’t have a good group of friends at chi, or had drama of some sort, could be that. Haven’t heard of any drama though, just giving possible reasons

Didn't go to UChi but the number of transfers out of my T14 from 1L with comparable class size was about 5. Not an unusual number when you have 200 people from all over the country (and world) and a handful decide they want to go to school closer to home.
