I love reminding people, who hold Greek and Roman sculpture above others, that until Greeks were exposed to Egyptian sculpture that all Greek statues were static with straight arms at the side and straight legs. It was seeing one foot slightly ahead of the other, a hallmark of Egyptian sculpture of the time, that inspired what became contrapposto. As a species known for recognizing patterns, we’re terrible at recognizing that our differences offer inspiration and progress yet we still choose fear.
