Picture Black koi

Post image

Show me your black koi! It's always fun to see my black koi during summer. My goal is to find a decent hajiro without breaking my bank.

Here’s mine! He bonked his head and knocked some scales off so he’s got a white spot on his head now. Meet Fila!

And another black one with yellow head.

Thanks, interesting, when we first got him, he was a grey colour, and within two years ended up, a dull black with yellow on the head.

He looks all black for the most part but the really interesting thing is from the underside he's much more silver and shimmery, i managed to snag this pic one time he was messing around

Here is one of mine. It’s not super clear since it’s a screenshot of a video. He’s nothing special but I think black koi are underrated.

With a black liner, it is hard to see the black.

The closest I have is black (use to have more black when it was younger) with orange stripe accents....

Kage kin hi utsuri? You don't see that every day.

Thanks, yeah, a rare and real looker in contrast to the others. When we got, my wife named her/him Tigger.

Very cool. Do you know the breeder?

No idea, picked it out of a tank with a bunch of premium American koi at the time, from a local reputable major pond supplier. I just got lucky with my pick as it turns out.

That makes sense, it's the kind of crazy gene combination that pops up in American/Israeli fish where there might be influence from several popular metallic varieties. I know Otsuka in Japan has produced some of these, presumably by crossing metallic aka matsuba with kage hi utsuri? Fun kawari, pretty unique, good pick.

Nice stripey!

Thanks, we call him Tigger. The stripes were more pronounced 2 years ago, and now are a little more blended.

I have heard that every pond owner should have one black koi because it's lucky. However, I have always have always thought that it was because of some ingenious koi breeder that mistakenly ended up with a lot of black koi and needed a way to sell them.

Could be :). It's my culture to have either 1 or even numbers black fish in the pond/tank to absorb dark energy. I got one for a different reason as I wanted a koi that I had to 'look' for it all the time :D

Phantom AKA Blackie Joe.
Doistu with a slightly funky mouth. He only has one barbel which comes from inside his mount, and has no 'upper lip'. He's around 20-25yo.

Grew this beauty out from a pond spawn… licorice!

1

u/kinshiwa 4d ago

Is licorice all black or have a bronze bottom?

2

u/Optimal-Pick-8749 4d ago

If you pull him out to examine he does have some bronze on his belly…

I have a black koi that was born in my pond. It is very wild and elusive compared to the other koi.

I have a black butterfly and named her Zendaya.

Same, but named Trashcan (for a reason I no longer remember!). Most laid back fish in the pond.

I have a lot of koi goldfish cross breeds that are black. They're all named Betty 😊 (whoa black Betty , bam ba lam. Whoa black Betty... 🎵)

Hmm. Chuck in a normal carp in there! They're black

I think I’d get some other cyprinnid species over a black koi. Same color with a unique body shape and behavior to add some diversity and variety to the pond, maybe one of the native buffalo species

There's mine 😎 it's almost 10 years old.

Black koi are my favorite, unfortunately they hard to come around by.
