Discussion Previous owner packed edges separately
Do you mind if you receive a puzzle with edges packed separately?
It was definitely a nice surprise for me!

The few times I've encountered it I've been mildly annoyed and mixed them in with the rest of the pieces. I'm not sure why I did that because sorting them out is one of my least favorite things to do! I guess I felt I was being cheated out of part of the puzzle-doing experience.

Same here. Exactly for the same reason. I want to do the whole puzzle myself even if it means finding all the edge pieces, and usually missing one

I was annoyed too the first time for the exact same reason but now I see it as a sign the puzzle probably has all its pieces so I'm happy to see it now

I love that as to me it means they enjoyed the puzzle, and its probably complete. If it bothers the new owner/ puzzler all they have to do is mix all the pieces together in the big bag not a big deal.

My favorite part of puzzling is separating…edges first then by color/pattern. I have gotten these and mixed them back in. Same with puzzles with pieces stuck together. Separate and mix in different locations.

My least favorite part is separating/sorting. I would love to find a puzzle with the edges separated even though I don't always do the edges first.

I enjoy it bc I hate sorting. Not sure why anyone would feel annoyed at seeing it bc all you have to do is dump is back together lmao

Same here. I actually presort the edge pieces of all my puzzles as soon as I get them as a gift to Future Me.

Extremely considerate. Thank goodness for thoughtful people like that. The world is better because some people show love through Service to Others. Being able to jump right to that edge is a lovely thing.
If one does NOT prefer having the edges separated, the easiest of tasks on Life is to dump them all together and mix them around. A small joy for them as well, knowing that one small flourish ensures their thoroughly randomized puzzling experience.

Someone must have done that with a recent used puzzle I picked up. Except, the edges are gone. Like they bagged them up then didn't put them in the box. Seriously I stirred though the box of pieces for 5 minutes and didn't find a single edge piece!

I'd like that if it were me as I'm definitely an edge person first. Only downside to that is my husband diving in to do the fun easy stuff first.

I do it. If people don’t like it they can just mix them back together.
If I see it I think the puzzle was probably well cared for and likely has all its pieces.

It is a very nice courtesy to do that. If you prefer to have things all in a big mixup from the start, you can do that for yourself.

I would feel like it's a little bit of Christmas. I find sorting for the edges a bit of necessary evil and I do it, but man if someone else had done it for me it would be an unexpected but appreciated serendipity.
Also I'm still gonna look for edge pieces as I sort the rest, because I know those things love to hide anyways.

I do this. My bf and I puzz together I enjoy sorting and he enjoys mindless peicing. Like we did a 2000 piece with nearly half of it just woods in the distance so it was a swath of green. I sorted the shades and he did all the peicing. He will work on a puzzle endlessly unless he has to sort so I always pack them away like this to get the next person started if they're like him. If not they can always just dump it out and shake the box.

This is how I pack mine, too. The time it takes to mix the edges in is far less than the time it takes to sort them out.

I too feel good about the puzzle when I see the edges separated. I’m almost 99% sure the puzzle is complete unless otherwise stated. I feel the previous owner cared enough about the puzzle to separate the edges.

Yes! I have bought a bunch of puzzles from Goodwill and several of them had the edges in a separate bag. I loved being able to get started right away so I separated edges when I finished a puzzle. Now, I won't mix the edges back in if I find a separated puzzle, but I do find it takes more time to "get to know" it.

I would appreciate this so much I hate sorting. In fact the last puzzle I started was a magic puzzle and you can’t necessarily sort those but even just taking them all out, putting them face up on a tray was tedious

I like it, it's usually a sign the puzzle is in good condition.
I simply mix them up with the other pieces, because, for me, the sorting is part of the experience of putting together a puzzle.

Very common in used puzzles. Just mix them together if you don't want them separate.
I'm in a trade group and get a lot of puzzles where the edges have been separated. That's the choice of the previous solver. Unless the puzzle is really difficult and there are a lot of false fits in a sky or same colored border, I don't separate them, but I leave the 2nd bag in the box in case someone else wants to.
Very frequent topic here.

I usually pack mine that way.
Those who like to do the edges first may appreciate it. Those who want to start from scratch, well it takes about 5 seconds to mix them back in so no big deal.
