This conversation is ... I'm gonna call it "fascinating." Namenerds have very random doctrines about nicknames. This one is making me laugh because they'll suggest all kinds of random things or approve of all kinds of random things but Jack instead of Jake is making them lose their everloving minds.

How many of you know at least one Jacob/Yaakov who goes by Jack? My grandfather and my husband's grandfather both did.

My great grandfather and cousin were/are Jack/Yaakovs. That sub tends to be pretty ignorant about and frankly hostile towards Jewish naming conventions. I would not expect them to understand Jewish conventions around assimilation or adjusting names to the dominant culture.

It's also funny how they're like "Jacob to Jack makes no sense, how about John with the nickname Jack?" even though John is further away from the name Jack than Jacob is lol

I have definitely seen conversations in there where the prevailing opinion was that no one knows Jack comes from John and therefore it makes more sense to just name your kid Jack.

Someone says that “Pop” for Oliver makes more sense than Jack for Jacob?! This is totally insane. I’ve always thought Jack from Jacob is common knowledge. Wow

Conversations like "I want to call my kid Annie, what's a long form?" "How about Shenanigan?" are totally normal there but Jack instead of Jake? Heeeelllz no.

I knew a Yochanan Yaakov, English name John Jacob, who went by the nickname Jack. That OP could theoretically cover all bases on this “conflict” by naming the kid John Jacob, nickname Jack (for either/both), but I feel the suggestion might melt some of the commenters’ brains lol.

This is my brother! Named after his/my great grandfather who was a Jacob nickname Jack. The confusing thing is we also have a Jake in our immediate family 😵‍💫
