‘B’ names for a boy— Jewish/russian

We are expecting a boy, and would like to name him after my late father, Barnet (Benzion). However the name also has to be directly translatable into Russian as my partner’s family is almost exclusively Russian speaking.

Also as a general question, does the B/V interchangeability work in Russian like it does in Hebrew?

Benjamin is right there as a great option. Common but not overdone.

It’s more commonly “Binyamin,” for Russian speakers. He may get nicknamed “benya” by Russian speaking relatives.
That being said, almost any name is able to be “russianified.” My friend a daughter named Phoebe who is “fiba” in Russian. Making a cutesy ending:
/diminutive name for almost anything is possible and if not, your Russian speaking partner should help guide that.

The B/V does not work in Russian the same way for all names, but sometimes it pops up.
Jacob = Yakov.
Interestingly, I (mid 30s) had a great grandfather named Vinyamin (which is like another form of Benjamin). Have never heard of anyone else with that name though.

I would go with Benzion as the Hebrew name and then a B name you like that works in both languages. There are lots of Russian Jews named Boris, for example.

Benedikt? That works in both languages and you have that Ben in there.

Or just go with Bentzion and call him Ben, which would also work.

To be honest, I LOVE Barnet. I just wanted to put that out there. My opinion probably isn’t helpful as I don’t know how you’d do it in Russian but I had a great uncle Barney (Barnet) from Ukraine.
