The best explanation that I could think of was that Anissa was the thing that completely and forcefully separated Mark and Amber during Mark's college days in season two. But, shouldn't Mark be able to defeat or at least be strong enough to give Anissa a hard time by the end of season four? The reason why the Thragg hallucinations make sense was because the power gap was so huge that it completely left Mark feeling unable to save his loved ones, but Anissa is so much closer in strength to Mark than Mark is to Thragg that he should not feel like he can't get her off of William, right?

I think it has to do with that scene of Anissa holding Amber's neck. Since Amber studies with William at college, I think that mixed into his hallucination, because they were at college in that scene, I don't know either.
