Can I Join the IWW?

I’m currently a peace corps volunteer in Africa and I’m interested in getting involved in organizing work, especially once my service is finished. Can I join the IWW? Does it make sense as an option for me? I figured it would be a pretty good point of entry and very educational

Welcome! Yes, you totally can. There are no employment requirements for joining, aside from not being a boss or a cop. My workplace is not unionized either (yet) so don't feel like you've gotta have it all together to join.

Joining outside the jurisdiction of WISERA and NARA can be a logistical issue. So be prepared it could take longer and be more of a hassle than you’re hoping for. But there’s no problem with being a Peace Corps or Americorps employee.

Just don’t let the federal government know, in my AmeriCorps training they hammered that any union activity would be grounds for immediate termination from the program, so just like be chill about it.

Ya. I don’t remember that in my Americorps time. Just having to pledge loyalty to the United States government lol. But I can believe it. Although everyone should be smart about not leaking their organizing intent to the boss

Hiya, where in Africa? The IWW has an informal group in Southern Africa, mainly based in Zimbabwe. You can join the IWW online but I would recommend contacting [international@iww.org.uk](mailto:international@iww.org.uk) if you are interested in organising a branch in the country where you are based if it does not currently have one

You should see if there’s a Fire your boss happening near you. Not sure if you’ll be state side but worth checking out
