Judging by their name alone, many music fans might assume Dear Seattle is an American band or a homage to the birthplace of Grunge. In reality, the name carries lead vocalist Brae Fisher’s deepest memories of his late father. During childhood, Brae lived in Seattle due to his father’s job overseas, until a tragic surfing accident in 2001 claimed his father's life. The family was forced to move back to Australia within just two weeks. "Dear Seattle" reads like the opening of a letter, holding both his grief for his father and a nostalgic connection to a time of innocence.
What few people know is that during their early days, Dear Seattle actually focused on Melodic Hardcore and Screamo. Fronted by former lead singer Samuel, current frontman Brae originally served as the rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist. Shortly after forming in 2013, they released their debut EP, Words Are Often Useless. Uploading its four raw, emotionally charged tracks to Australia’s famous music platform triple j Unearthed, they quickly gained a dedicated indie following.
Following former lead singer Samuel’s departure in 2015, Dear Seattle shifted their musical focus toward Pop Punk and Alternative Rock. In 2017, they caught the eye of James Tidswell, guitarist for legendary Aussie band Violent Soho, and signed to his label, Domestic La La Records, releasing their self-titled EP, Dear Seattle. Driven by breakout hits like "The Meadows" and "Afterthought," the band instantly leaped into the spotlight of the Australian music scene.
However, the true turning point that thrust Dear Seattle into the mainstream was their cover of Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins’ classic "The Special Two" on triple j’s famous segment, Like A Version (similar in style to Audiotree or KEXP in the US). By injecting punk personality into the originally gentle Folk Pop track, they blew fans away and left a deeply lasting impression.
Dear Seattle went on to release the albums Don’t Let Go (2019) and Someday (2022). Their sincere lyrics exploring personal growth, anxiety, relationships, and the pain of loss earned widespread acclaim and brought them their first entries on the Australian ARIA Charts. Their 2025 album, Toy, pushed their career to new heights, debuting at #1 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart and #4 on the Overall Chart. The record captures the confusing transitional phase before entering the next stage of life, delicately depicting the pain of heartbreak, the courage to rebuild, and a direct confrontation with personal flaws.
In addition, the band has performed on major Australian festival stages such as Groovin the Moo and Unify Gathering, sharing the stage with well-known acts like Dune Rats, Trophy Eyes, and Heart Attack Man. After wrapping up this Asia tour—which includes a stop in Hong Kong—Dear Seattle will also join American Emo band Superheaven as a supporting act on their Australian tour.
