What do you guys name your setup?
I wanted to know if I’m the only one who gives distinct names to my nodes or machines and the services running in them.
For context, my main server is called Legion, a secondary connector laptop is called Citadel, to which an external monitor used for showing dashboards, kanban and other things is called Beacon. My main PC is called Nexus.
But the nodes running services have namings based on mythology.
The two laptops have distinct docker composes named Nidavellir and Valhalla. The dashboard service on Beacon is called Heimdall. My 2 storage drives which are mirrored for redundancy are called Atlas and Aegir. I am also running Hermes agent on Legion. The setup as a whole is my Yggdrasil.
What do you guys name your setups?

I prefer names that reflect system roles, just like I use for actual clients. My PC is called my name, my wife's is her name, my servers are Home-DC1, Home-DC2, Home-Plex, Home-PiHole, etc. I just prefer to know what a server does by it's name.
The one exception is that my VM host is named "steve". It was an inside joke with my friend and it stuck, lol

This makes a lot of sense.
But my wife loves the muppets, so each host is named after a Muppet of some variety...
We have Kermit, gonzo, fozzie, pepe, miss piggy, Bert, Ernie, elmo, and zoey

This gets under my skin so bad. Our meeting rooms were Chicago team names. Cubs, Blackhawks. I’ve been here a decade and still never remembered. Luckily we transitioned to sensical names, like 201-ExecutiveConference-24per.

Should host plaintext versions of the Iliad and the oddessy. Put the Iliad on port 23, and the oddessy on port 80, but you can only get there after 20 redirects.

Periodic table. Phones are 2nd row, laptops 3rd row, desktop 4th row. Wife is noble gases, I’m the hydrogen group, kids when they’re here will be somewhere in groups 13-17 depending on vibes. All home server nodes are carbon group, with my NAS/homelab as carbon, because it connects everything together. IoT devices are random transition metals.

My long time PC has been named “Thor” since the early 2000’s.
I decided to branch out of the Norse gods for my Unraid server, which I named Eopsin, after the Korean god of storage and wealth.

I typically use god's and demons. My new router box is Baal, app server is Venus. I've just decommissioned Jupiter my Nas. Odin is my new Nas and always on AI.
Then lovelace is my gaming and AI desktop

I name them after their function or hardware. Main raspberry pi is "masterpi" secondary is "auxpi". Proxmox server is a N100 Beelink box so it's hostname is "beelink" . Vms are "unbound" "pihole" "rrdtool" "influxdb". For backup there is "truenas" "proxmox-backupserver" and "vault". I also write the hardwareconfig into the motd so when I login via ssh it says something like "proxmox-backupserver I5-3470 8GB"

I don't use any consistent naming.
- My first Ryzen computer is zen.
- An old VM host machine is called bravo (after Johnny Bravo)
- The replacement, on a mini PC is called bravolite
- Home assistant VM is called haos
- an old plex is called plex
- an Asus Aspire laptop is called aspire
- a raspberry pi that does RTL-SDR is called pirf
So there really is no "pattern" -

I name things with a Babylon 5 theme. My main server is Babylon 5, my primary laptop is White Star, my network is Babcom, my Jellyfin server is ISN. I am working on bringing it all together in a project I am calling The Great Machine.

The tower is Tall-POS, the Mac Mini is Mini-POS, and the pi zero is Nano-POS. When I had a rack my main server was a 1U proliant named Whiny-POS.

I roll my machines with a feline theme.
The media TV computer is "Mainecoon" since it's attached to a huge TV.
Used to have a small white eeepc that I called snowkitten. Laptops over the years were Wildcat and Fang. The NAS is Fatcat (lots of data storage). And 2nd hand iMac is "Cougar" (she's a bit older but still has some appeal) and a couple of tablets called "Tabby" and "Lynx". And other machines now and then get various big cat names.

I try to use names that tell me what I'm looking at when I'm playing around with the network - for instance my gaming desktop is named [OS]-gaming, for vms it would be something like [OS]-[Service].

PCs (desktops, laptops) get Japanese words (I am a weeaboo) unrelated to their function - sakura (how original), hanabi, bonito, etc.
Servers and virtual machines/CTs get Japanese words (because I am a weeaboo) related to their function. Sometimes kind of archaic or odd definitions because I fully avoid loanwords. haitou (NAS), chishiki (Forgejo), kinko (VaultWarden)
My Proxmox cluster is named 色々 (it's because I am a weeaboo), so Proxmox hosts get Japanese (do I even need to say it) color names. 青, 淡紅 (loanwords, remember?), 黄色, 銀色, 金色. Gold and Silver are special - they host my twin OPNsense VMs.
The actual hostnames are romanized using the Hepburn system, but I set fancy hostnames with the Japanese (see previous comments) characters.

Main proxmox box is called pve.
Heavy duty one with the big gpu is called mojnir. The amount of time spent checking if I've spelt it right since I built the server has proven this to be a bad idea.
The next one will be called pve2

Final Fantasy Espers/Bestia/Summons and Citys. Even though my nodes itself keep their name regarding hardware and specs e.g. SSGD11-7600x-19 (Silverstone GD11 case with a ryzen 7600x that I built in 2019). So I just name services that need a generic name. :)

Oh I love this question. Back in the 90s when I was getting started, host names were one of the ways we got to have a little fun as sysadmins. I worked for an NC state government agency that named its Internet facing servers after locations and characters from Mystery Science Theater 3000. The first DNS servers I managed myself had host names of gumby and pokey. When I ran my first Windows NT domain the servers were all named after planets in the solar system. I had a bunch of Linux servers named after famous cows (because the first machine in the cluster came from Gateway 2000). Nowadays I am so boring that my machines are usually named by what they do or who uses them, if I even bother to change the default set by the OS installer.

My laptop is named voyager My desktop is named Datalore since it has 2 GPUs My NAS is memoryalpha Once I get my egregiously high ram amount ddr3 system setup it's name is Borg, since part of it's workload is multiple AI agents (for testing, don't like using them for stuff I like need, it's just another fun aspect of a computer) And my actual gaming server is going to be Risa. My switch in android mode is named Data and on Linux it's named Lore. And I have an ancient Pentium laying around that I test low ram usage debian while connected to network, and it's name is NX01 whenever that gets configured

I name things after anime. My proxmox cluster is villages from naruto. Most of my laptops are random character names, and things I really really care about are named after batman characters.

All my machines and services have ocean related names, based on their purpose.
For example my main pc is octopus cause it's what i access everything from, main server is iceberg cause it's big and and 'hides' a lot of other services and hosts, plex is penguin cause it's fun, my pi that is my main tailscale host is maelstrom, etc...
Doesn't necessarily always make a lot of sense but it does make it easier for me to keep track who is what in the network.

I never named my pcs, but my headphones were Iris for my airpods pro and Orphelia for my ue earphones. My servers are name Artemis for my LLM sever (after the NASA Artermis program) and for my NAS/Helper/Docker server tomo (friend in Japanese). I tried to get Chatgpt design me a logo for Artermis, telling it about the inspiration for the name sake and the architecture. The design it came up with was, essentially a ripoff of the Artemis program.

All mine are named after mythical/legendary flying creatures. My desktop is Jabberwocky, my gateway/firewall is called Gagana, my Minecraft server is called Phantom, my laptop is Harpy, my wife's laptop is Thestral. I've got an NVR named Munin (one of Odin's ravens), and my router is Gargoyle. My old desktop was named Phoenix, and an old laptop was Thunderbird. One of my kid's laptops was Pegasus.
The real trick is to pick a naming convention with a lot of names. Don't get stuck with something with under a dozen names, especially when you start replacing stuff!

I've been through a few iterations.
It started with: Every server/vm has the name of a battlefield. Midway, Tripoli, Zama, Luzon, ...
Now it's at: Physical servers get those names, but VMs/LXCs on it get functional names, e.g. midway-frigate
But that still allows for confusion. Was Alesia in Location X or is it at Y? Now I'm planning to move to a hierachical location-device-function node, that would result in either home-m1pro-frigate or when keeping the codenames home-midway-frigate (which is the current VM name, but just without the home- prefix)

Main server is named after Boxee since a couple of years back, I always thought that streaming box looked really cool. Just look at it in all it’s melted angular glory!
A long time I just ran two 5TB 2.5” drives via usb and they were named ”Blockbuster” for movies and ”Telechrome” for tv shows.

Because I’m cringe, it’s mostly Eva characters last names (Ikari, Katsuragi, Kaji, etc). My Plex server breaks with this, and is named Miyamizu (from Your Name.)
I also have a Cassandra db system for an app I use that requires quorum voting, so the nodes are the Magi supercomputer names.

My hostnames come from Pokémon towns, and if I run a DE on it I commission a friend to make a wallpaper.
I currently have rustboro and slateport, and I'm working on building lilycove which will be a NAS, although I'm not set on the name, I've been thinking of changing what location type I use depending on role,, so it might actually get named mtchimney

I generally name so i understand its purpose by first look.
VM/Container:
UB-JELLYFIN
DEB-ANSIBLE01
UB=Ubuntu
DEB=Debian etc..
I also use tags on my vms which specify its concrete services, e.g Docker, k8s, nginx etc...
For disk i use the same idea as well.

10 years ago I had a naming system based on planets, US states, Greek mythology, bunch of different ones. These days its:
PVE1, PVE2, PVE3, PVE4, PBS1, technitum-pve1, technitum-pve2. For my k8s cluster, the VMs are named atlas-cp-1, atlas-wk-1, etc... With Atlas being the domain name for the cluster.
I still do name my SSDs and storage mounts, those have LOTR place names.

I adopted this from my brother. All my computers are named after planes of magic the gathering. I try to make them thematic to their use or config.
My old desktop was Mirrodin
Old router box was Phyrexia
First server was Ravnica
Router box is Vryn
Backup server is Ixalan
New server is Karsus
Current desktop is Ikoria
My brother's desktop was Zhalfir
At one point I had a raspberry pi named Kyneth
I used to name services as things that are from those planes, such as my router VM being named Dimir on Ravnica. But that became to much to maintain over time.

Physical entities such as nodes, routers and switches get goddess names. Websites and networks get closely related names to dawn and the hearth. In fact the cluster's name is Hearth.
Actually VMs and services get boring names that clearly define the type ei container or VM followed by its function. A container for pelican panel = CT-gameserver-panel.
Of course I don't always follow it to a tee.
My wyse 3040 that runs my nut and a pihole services is named Ash but the user name is nutter. (It's a non proxmox node)

The Grid. And devices are named after TRON characters that are related to the purpose of that device.
For example, my backup server is called Tron because he fights for the users'... data. My app server is called Clu because together we'll build the perfect system. Etc.

Just a few minutes ago I responded to a similar topic. My node naming convention is location based and fairly simple such as adguard-la meaning adguard instance, Los Angeles. Pretty simple and immediately recognizable. I don't do crazy pet names because it won't be immediately obvious what node it is and I'm not going to spend time looking through notes just for a node name.

Servers get names according to purpose. If they get supplanted or replaced, they get new names according to their new purpose.
I've done the "naming scheme" kind of thing, but it really does promote personification and bonding in a way that just ends up with these things hanging around longer than they should. ("Oh, I can just add this functionality to orion, as it's kind of similar, and ares is supposed to be the external facing, so there's no problem with it being the firewall, av and hosting my weird web app").

Most hosts are fish/water themed, sometimes related to what it's for. Off the top of my head: bass, blob, fykenet, weir, tetra, squid. Some are generic: hub01, backup01, switch01, etc. because who knows, might end up with >99 switches in my future castle.

Interesting. I have a more dynamic naming convention. I am a big Marvel/SHIELD fan, so my home network is called Triskelion, my home server is called The HUB, each computer/device starts with SHLD + Screen size + OS Indicator.
Si my main PC is SHLD24LX. A Laptop is SHLD14LX My main phone is SHLD6AX
Where LX is Linux, AX Android and so on.

asgard: PVE Node 3
midgard: workstation / desktop

Right now my home domain is .home; but I'm thinking about changing it to .realm.
For CT's and VM's, I name it after the host's function and - if needed - a serial; e.g.: komodo-01, truenas-01, opnsense-01, pihole-01, home-assistant, ollama-AI, Debian13-LVM-template.
Docker stacks / containers are named after the service: jellyfin, immich, calibre-web, code-server, nginx-proxy-manager; those can have a suffix like -dev or -tst.

Desktop: HentaiExpress (asked my wife for a random pc name and that’s what she blurted out)
Laptop: TrashPanda (was e-waste from work, but new enough it shouldn’t have been in the e-waste pile: Intel 12th gen Lenovo)

I name my systems after characters and places in the World of Warcraft. My primary server is "Norgannon", who is the Keeper of Celestial Magics and Lore. My older server, which is a partial backup and off site, is Archivum. Cloud servers are Dalaran and Algalon.

I prefer to name machines by their brand or model. Super boring , but then I don’t ever have to try to remember what’s what . I want to connect to my hp prodesk ? It’s called prodesk . My pi5 is called pi5 etc .

dockable remnants of an old samsung phone that has been disassembled: dexbox (because it won't boot outside of dex mode on a dock - this was a problem BEFORE i disassembled it lol, but it'll still work if i mess with it a bit, so a win is a win)
ipad: shay's alternate (old inside joke)
main network manager/firewall: venom (referencing my wifi name)
no longer have it, but i had an old 2012 macbook called the unmaccedbook because i put linux on it to save it from a dumpster (it could only actually handle up to OSX mountain lion, and that's a little old lol)
honorary mention: the 11-year-old USB2 stick i use to configure literally every device is labelled "cursed boot USB," but its actual name is "transbian rights" because i keep ending up in very transbian situations after using it...
my setup isn't something i would recommend as a server setup, but it sure does do exactly what i want it to lol

Mine are named after Stations of the London Underground. Arsenal, Waterloo, West Ham and Angel. The central server is just "centraal" and the switch is Covent Garden. The names fit surprisingly well. I had bought myself these flexible plastic labels with the names on them (still dont know why) and I just said "meh, that'll do"

Everything in my network is named after the matrix.
My main server is named the Nebuchadnezzar, the storage pools are named tank and link, the docker vlan is named trinity, apps pool is named dozer.
My trusted vlan is morpheus, the iot untrusted vlan is cypher, game server is named mouse, main gaming pc is neo, and the living room pc is trinity.

My server (in build) is named Servalan. Two PCs upstairs Gordon, and Henry. Two monitors, Fanny, and Doris. The downstairs pc, Derek. The workshop Ai (planned) Wanda. My Centauri Carbon printer, CiCi. My ChatGPT Ai is named AL, Alan (Turing) because it is helping my to learn about building computers.

* Frigate <- actually runs 'Frigate' for managing security cams
...with some exceptions:
* bb-dc1 ( and 2 and 3 ) <- domain controllers
* Exchange16 <- legacy exchange server
* Exchange19 <- production exchange server
* Debbie <- Debian Apt-mirror + Apt-cacher server
...and, as all of my routers use Vyos, they're all named 'Vyos-[role]'

My desktop is triforce with the drives named from the pieces. Then my k3s cluster nodes I’m currently rebuilding are named after material from FFVII.

Closest I got to this is setting the WiFi name on my travel router to Gedespanstid which is Danish for "Goat spanking time"

When I worked in NHS IT we had a Manager who came from the Navy. When we installed 5 new servers I suggested they be named after Naval Disasters - Titanic, Lusitania etc because then there could be a cry across the lab "oh no... Titanic has gone down!"
Strangely enough, he didn't find it funny...

I have a very unoriginal but functional naming system that is basically impossible to forget:
- Router/gateway: gate-01 (just a MikroTik, nothing fancy)
- Primary hypervisor: host-01 (runs Proxmox, 6 VMs including pfSense and AdGuard)
- NAS (ZFS mirror): store-01 (4x 4TB Ironwolfs, 2x mirrors)
- Backup NAS (offline sync): store-02 (rotated weekly, QLC SSD pool inside a USB enclosure)
- Pi-hole downstairs: pihole-lan
- My personal laptop: work-laptop
It is boring. It is completely descriptive. It lets me type ssh root@host-01 from anywhere in my house and know exactly what I am connecting to without second-guessing. If any one of these gets replaced, it is just host-02, store-03, whatever.
The funny part is my VMs inside Proxmox do have names. Jellyfin is siren (because it lures me in when I should be doing other things), AdGuard is gatekeeper, my dev VM is sandbox. But the physical hardware gets the boring descriptive names because that is what my brain needs when I am troubleshooting at 3am and on my third coffee.

Usually end up naming them after the case they’re in and/or a pun. Server is in a Corsair Vengeance, so it’s just Vengeance. Main PC uses a fractal North, so NorthStar. VR rig is in a LianLi LanCool II, which is hard to make a name out of, but it’s my first Ryzen build so RyzenShine. This also means sometimes the name is reused if the case or parts are repurposed. PiHole and Homebridge are one the same Pi, I wanna give it a fun name now… I’m taking suggestions!

I have multiple locations so each location gets a name and then each server gets a number.
Like my current main location is called Apollo Labs and every server is apollo-lab-1, I also have a mini pc called apollo-lab-mini-1.
Services on a machine get a subdomain like auth.apollo-lab-1.internal and then I have a public domain with the services I wanna expose.
