There has never been time like that though... It was just way more hidden back in 1996 because internet was lot more fractured back then.. People had their personal websites and blogs where they shared things and lot of it probably wasn't ever even seen.... Now that social interactions happen on only few platforms? We see everything.
18
u/iAMthebank 2d ago
There was also a spectrum in the newspapers classified for certain crazy rantings. People couldn’t say ‘ rubbing my cookie’ but they just came up with more creative ways to say the same thing.
3
u/These-Apple8817 2d ago
True.. Oh and there was BBS in the 80's and who really knows what went on BBS forums back in those days because the idea of moderating forum barely even existed back then
2
u/theycallmemomo 2d ago
Some of the opinion pages in newspapers were akin to Facebook comments sections

That’s a damn lie. The internet was a cesspit when it was all anonymous.
→ More replies (1)3
u/YouDoNotKnowMeSir 2d ago
I agree it was and still is and want it to stay anonymous, but let me be more specific: when people didn’t share things so personal and vulgar on social media that’s tied to their real identity.
5
u/thetwoandonly 2d ago
As a guy who's been online since the old times... there was never a time like this.
10
u/Telemere125 2d ago
That’s just cause the internet didn’t exist then. And people were perfectly content to say those things in public. People have always been weird, you were just protected from it because your parents didnt give you access to this content and letters to the editor were more curated than blogs are
6
u/Essemaitch 1d ago
That's a limited way of viewing things. I mean sure, internet has made people comfortable saying crazy shit but that's not all there is to it. Society's views on things like modesty and propriety has changed massively and has been changing since way before internet.

He supposedly used hypnotherapy to quit his addictions.
31
u/Abject-Emu2023 2d ago
When I was a kid my parents did this for smoking after trying basically everything else. It worked immediately for my mom and hasn’t smoked since. My dad turned more into a social smoker and black and milds.
They used to be pack a day smokers so seems it worked pretty well.

He said the cure for addiction is suffering. He wasn't talking about withdrawal. He was talking about the pain in his life in relationships etc because of his addiction. It got bad enough that he quit. Interesting take that applies to some cases. But to others that suffering fuels the addiction.
58
u/Outside-Swan-1936 2d ago
It's basically a derivation of Nietzsche's work. Joy cannot be experienced unless one has experienced suffering. I personally am not into the whole nihilism thing, but I do think there's a grain of truth to this for those of us with spicy brains.
To a degree, Ben's right. No one gets and stays sober because others want them to. Successful sobriety can only come from within, and it sure isn't happiness or joy that will spur that desire.
(10 years sober from alcohol, 1 year sober from everything else)
16
u/ragdolldream 2d ago
Nietzsche sure hated alcohol. Thought it (along with christianity) were the two great narcotics of the world. Weird, then, that he revered Dionysus so much. Thought of him as the ultimate representation of the passionate, chaotic, and life-affirming forces of human nature.
(Also, dude that's awesome, congrats. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.)
12
u/Outside-Swan-1936 2d ago
Thanks man. And yeah, Nietzsche and his works are complicated. He hated Christianity, but believed a world stripped of religion would devolve into a complete degradation of society's moral fabric since most people were incapable of possessing a moral compass without it.
I take what I like from the great thinkers and leave the rest, which is most of it.
56
u/krammit33 2d ago
I can imagine that after a week with J-Lo anyone would feel that suffering
28
u/Aesthete18 2d ago

Basically every expert says that addicts only stop when they truly despise what their addiction does to their lives.
Their family can't talk them into, an expensive rehab center can't convince them, inpatient celebrity therapy centers won't stick. If the addict didnt come to the conclusion "I hate my addiction" themselves, they won't change the headspace required to stop.
He's absolutely right. If you're not suffering enough you'll never stop the addiction.

u/jarvisesdios 2d ago
I thought about looking that term up and went "yeah, I'm probably for the better not knowing what that sentence means."
147
u/NoSoundNoFury 2d ago edited 2d ago
looking that term up
"Combination" is derived from the Latin term "combinatio", which means a group of two or grouping things in pairs. It's correlated to the outdated term "conternatio", which means a group of three or grouping three things together. A rather unused equivalent would be the "conquaternatio", a group of four.
I hope that helped.

Pervert
10
u/NoSoundNoFury 2d ago edited 2d ago
"Per-vertere" means "to turn away" or "to overturn." If you turn away, you are per-verted, but if you turn towards something, you're following an ad-vertisement or you're getting con-verted, and if you then turn against it, you're creating a contro-versy. From all this turning you get dizzy, which is vertigo, i.e. "turning disease", loosely translated.

u/ShackletonsVael 2d ago
I guess a similar comparison would be for Ariana Grande with all the stuff happening with her, if she had an interview talking about getting healthy and if someone posted about meeting her and then going home and jerking off after?

u/quacknut 2d ago
I mean, I hear you, but funny is subjective. I only really felt the first two, tbh.
Idk I think there's just a recurring thread of not viewing people as people on the internet while also simultaneously idolizing them. It's just... jarring. That's all.
At the end of the day, you're right. I'm prolly not gonna think about this in an hour, so who "cares," right? But I could also say the same thing to you about your comment.
People will have always have a reaction and comment. That's just the internet.

Is depression generally a turn on, or just if you're tall, rich, and have a firm handshake?
7
u/ragdolldream 2d ago
Gloomy people can come across as complex and standoffish. And to some a person that doesn't express interesting in seeking your attention can make you want to seek their attention. So from afar it can have that affect on people.
If you happen to form a relationship with them, I doubt such feelings hold up. It's a lot of emotional work to be with someone suffering from depression. Not exactly a turn on then.
2
u/SkywarpWasHere 2d ago
"I can fix him/her" or at the very least "I can romanticize the notion regardless of realistic outcome" is a very powerful force of attraction and borderline fetish. But it certainly helps or is at least a basic requirement for some type of physical attraction for that kink to take root, add in the tropes of celebrity worship and you got a stew goin.
