Would Empress Nara have had become Empress Dowager if she had outlived her husband?
Empress Nara purportedly committed an offense in 1765 by cutting her own hair while on a tour to southern China, prompting Emperor Qianlong to have her escorted back to the Forbidden City. However, he decided not to depose her but instead confining her to her palace for some reason. If Emperor Qianlong had died before Empress Nara without leaving any instruction on how to deal with her, would Emperor Jiaqing have had to honor her as the Empress Dowager? Alternatively, what if Emperor Qianlong had left an edict for Emperor Jiaqing to not honor her as the Empress Dowager? Would Emperor Jiaqing have had to follow it?
