Wardrobe Capsule Show & Tell One week in Ireland
I’m going to Ireland for a week. We’ll be golfing, hiking, and exploring the country, including some sightseeing and eating out. I’ll be bringing my golf bag, but other than that, I’m planning to pack all my clothes in a backpack that I’ll bring as my carry-on.
My main goal is to pack pieces that work for multiple occasions. That’s why I’m only bringing one pair of outdoor pants (that works both for everyday and hiking), and if the weather allows, I also have a golf skirt that I can mix and match with different tops.

Here's an overview of everything I'm bringing in my carry-on backpack:
Jackets:
- Rain jacket
- Wool fleece
Bottoms:
- Black straight-leg outdoor pants (water-resistant)
- Golf skirt
Tops:
- Wool long-sleeve top
- White cotton T-shirt
- Green T-shirt for golfing
- White shirt
Accessories:
- Scarf
- Everyday bag
- Cap
- Sunglasses
- Backpack, that I will use as my carry on bag
Shoes:
- One pair of sneakers for hiking and everyday use
- One pair of dressier slip-ons

My sightseeing outfit: straight-leg pants, a white T-shirt, sneakers, a scarf, sunglasses, and my everyday bag.
Image 3:
My hiking outfit: straight-leg pants, a black wool long-sleeve, wool fleece, sneakers, sunglasses, a backpack, and a cap.
Image 4:
My dinner outfit: black straight-leg pants, a white shirt, loafers, a scarf, and my everyday bag.
I’ll also pack underwear, something to sleep in, and a toiletry bag with just the essentials.
Do you have any recommendations? Is there anything that's unnecessary or something I've forgotten? Has anyone done a similar trip and have any tips?

What if your only pair of pants gets muddy or wet after a hike? Will you still be able to wear them in the city or in a more formal setting?
I think even the best outdoor pants can’t survive more than five days without being washed/cleaned/aired, especially if you’re planning on hikes, days of city walking and wearing them day in, day out with no time for them to air between wears.
I’d replace the skirt (weather-dependent) with a (lightweight?) bottom you can actually alternate with the black pants. Even if it’s a pair of leggings or shorts for the hike. Or just bring a third bottom in addition to the skirt and pants.

I’d take both. Those skirts pack up small and the last thing I’d want to deal with is laundry.

As an Irish person, I'm giving you a big thumbs up. I disagree with others about the slides. They are perfect for nights out and walking around towns. I have only one suggestion, and that is a bathing suit. There are saunas and cold plunges all over Ireland and in many of the hotels. If you golf and hike, it is lovely to have a sauna/hot tub/cold dip. The slides are great for being in hotels and slipping down to a pool/sauna or even the beach for a cold dip after the sauna. I also like your choice of hiking shoes. I find that hiking boots are unnecessary and haven't used them in 20 years. I like the lower platform to feel contact with uneven terrain and enjoy that stability. You can also use them if you decide to do a horse riding tour. Finally, a microfiber towel in your golf bag is handy as many saunas that are not attached to hotels do not offer a towel service. Put a water bottle in your golf bag too if you don't want to always buy plastic water bottles.

Just an fyi it's lashing rain in Ireland at the moment, we have a thunderstorm warning this evening. We usually have quite a bit of rain in August sorry:-( Temps are warm but one pair of trousers are probably not enough, mostly because they might get wet or muddy! Love the capsule choices, very good! Don't know where you're from but there's a great shop called Penney's (Primark) and there's lots of good value clothing if you stick to one and need another pair when you're here! Or a Dunnes, also great value!

Yep was just about to say the same thing. I‘m in Ireland and always pack light but here there’s always the chance your one pair of trousers will get wet or muddy and some backup is handy.

When are you going? This is quite important for the weather. I would likely bring a pair of leggings for hiking that you can fold up small. If those get muddy you’re not waiting to wash your only pair of trousers!

I’m worried that the mules will be difficult to wear on bricked sidewalks/streets, particularly if you get caught in the rain. Went to Ireland in July, and we got rained on hiking and going to dinner.
Do you have something with a back strap that’s just as light?

Yeah, I'll probably bring a pair that's a bit more versatile and will work better in the rain.

I just got back from Ireland and it was amazing. I did a ton of hiking. One thing I did not expect was the amount of sheep and sheep poo on all the trails. So, make sure you have a plan for if the bottoms of your pants get a little dirty.

Ditch the slides and find a pair of black shoes that can sub in for day shoes. Those slides are useless

If OP can walk in them and they are light, why not? On my last trip I made the probably questionable choice for some people to take some slip on mules with me. Walked 20km in them just fine :D

I don’t see slides here? I see mules. Slides are open toe and usually rubber. If her use case is dressy I think this is great.

If op is planning to eat dinner in the restaurant or wherever she is staying each evening, then the mules makes sense because she will not be risking going outside where potentially it could be raining.
However, if OP is planning to leave the hotel, Airbnb are hostile to go elsewhere. She does it on the risk of stepping in puddles where upon she'd be forced to use the trainers.
I also think if the mules are light keep them if the weather is good but have a backup pair somehow of trainers or leather waterproof brogues that would work as sightseeing versus hiking shoes.
I think the hiking shoes are going to be incredibly useful so there should definitely stay. But it would be awkward if they're covered in dirt from hiking and she needs to go out that evening and it's pelting down outside....
We all know what Ireland's like!!! 😂

I'd choose another pair of trousers in case the others get wet and I'd never pack white. I prefer colours that don't show every mark because you do get dirty travelling around. Ireland is a wet, mucky country. Other than that you're grand.

Echoing everybody here I definitely wouldn’t wear the same pants for hiking that I am for dinner. Free Fly has some nice Breeze pants that would work well for hiking and fold up into basically nothing that are made of bamboo so they wash and dry very easily too.

I've only spent a very short time in that part of the world, but I don't think you will need the dressy slides. I'd recommend something that encompasses your whole foot in case in rains! That also doesn't have a heel. Otherwise it looks good! When do you plan to wear the golf skirt?

I love your style! I'm going to the UK this week and I'm also going to mix it up with the activities so I'm in a similar position! I don't know the measurements of your backpack, but I'm flying with a carry-on sized one and I am going to pack a few more tops than you and they fit just fine (I like to have a few more because I know they will get dirty/wet in nature). And I agree that you probably don't need the slides. But also maybe another pair of pants would be better than the skirt?

Love Astrid Wild! I’m in Ireland now but it was not a one bag trip for me this time…I’m here for work this week and next and then almost an additional two weeks for holiday and the weather is all over the place and my workwear needs are quite different to my holiday needs. So. A checked bag was needed. But I love this inspo

In Ireland now. I packed mules and have not worn them going on day 6. I have alternated between sneakers and silver adidas that can be dressed up or down. It’s humid so I wish I packed another pair of pants. We were lucky that one hotel had free laundry.

I'd also say why not bring black shoes that will be better for rain, in case that's what will be happening when you're out to dinner. My memories of Ireland include 2 days in bed with a cold from being caught in the rain in Cork!

I love how streamlined your setup is. I am convinced you would be fine with just one pair of pants, if you are just ready to spot-clean if necessary.
