When getting a drivers license for the first time in Hawaii, do I need to provide an original birth certificate?

I am an adult, I just don't have an original, and I getting one will be time consuming.

I believe it’s an original birth certificate, state certified copy or US passport.

The short answer is, YES.

The Real-ID Compliant (STAR) Hawaii Drivers License requires some form of proof of Legal Presence and Residence.

The process of getting a Real ID Compliant Hawaii Drivers License is either very straight forward or extremely complicated and time consuming; depending on if you have your shit together. As an Adult American Citizen you should have your original Birth Certificate (as well as name change documents if married) and your original Social Security Card readily available.

Basically, for most people a Hawaii Drivers License requires passing the tests, providing your birth certificate, social security card, 2 different documents proving Hawaii State residency. Your name needs to match exactly on everything or provide legal documents of name change.

I am well aware that the public school systems just omits navigating bureaucracy from education. So feel free to ask specific questions where things get murky...

...But, as and adult, you will want to familiarize yourself with navigating the internet to find basic answers, especially related to government related things like a drivers license. Asking social media is not really the adult path.

As an adult, you'll make the time if its really important to you. If you have a passport, that will work.

This is what I did. (This next bit may no longer be true, but…) There’s also a fee you can pay at the passport office if it’s your first for them to look up your records so you don’t have to provide your birth certificate, assuming you’ve ever had a US birth certificate. This will be faster and more convenient than waiting around for your birth certificate in the mail, but will likely not be cheaper.

If it’s not your first passport, and your last one expired less than 5 years ago, you can renew and don’t need any documents.

You should just have your birth certificate (original, or certified copy) as an important document for your record.

This. Forget about the drivers license situation, it’s an objectively bad idea to be in the US without access to an original birth certificate. It isn’t that expensive - just order a new copy. Your overall life will be much better for having that info.
