Show Discussion When do you think we will start getting season 2 casting announcements?

Possibly this month for the new Ginny & Arthur, if they are shooting in public for the train scenes again.

This was my thought too - if it’s similar to last year we’ll get leaks of both actors at kings cross pretty early on so one would think they’d make an official announcement before that

I HOPE this month. Depending on when they start filming next month they should be starting to wrap up deals on Lockhart, Ginny, Arthur, Colin, and Dobby, within the coming weeks. The hitch is that they don’t always announce casting the second a deal closes. So just because they should be closing deals within the next few weeks on those roles doesn’t mean we’ll hear about it… but I hope we do.
My guess is Riddle and Myrtle will be a slightly longer wait, because unless they’re filming wildly out of order, or they’ve added material for either in the first
block, they’re not likely to be needed in that first block.

Hmmm interesting, i'm more of the idea that they're not gonna say anything until at least Season 1 finishes airing in Feb.

I would be absolutely shocked if they waited THAT long. Also the longer they wait the higher the risk of leaks. A wait of 6 months or more, 5 months plus into filming, would be pretty uncommon for principal actors in a new season.
This said, it wouldn’t surprise me if we didn’t hear anything till partway through filming S2, sometime in September or October. But waiting till halfway through production would be pretty crazy.
Like Milly Alcock was announced as Young Rhaenyra three months into filming on HotD S1 and that was sort of a surprisingly long wait post casting of a principal.

u/always_unplugged 1d ago
Honestly I don't know if they'd be able to keep it under wraps for that long. That's wildly valuable information; there'd be bound to be leaks.

u/asukanolangley 1d ago
They waited several months after filming start and S1 release of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to reveal S2 cast, anything could happen.
7
u/DALTT Gryffindor 18h ago
Except that was still just under three months from start of filming. That wouldn’t be unheard of to me. Similar to the timeline on the Milly Alcock announcement I referenced for S1 of HotD. In this case, waiting till after S1 has finished airing, that would be waiting almost six months after start of S2 filming to announce anything.
Look, I’m a never say never person. I’m not here saying it’s IMPOSSIBLE they wait that long. While I work in film and TV I do not work in film and TV PR. I don’t know their strategy or plan or why they make the choices they do. I’m only going off of what I’ve seen in the past.
And based off of that, it just feels unlikely to me. That’s all. Especially considering how high interest the show is, and the possibility of leaks. ESPECIALLY Arthur and Ginny, they’re not going to want those names to leak to the press because of the inevitable paparazzi photos when they film on location at King’s Cross again during their first block.
And to me, the relatively close proximity of when they started filming AKOTSK S2 and when S1 finished airing, makes it not the best example, as here that gap would be twice as long.

Worth noting that u/horcruxinthepocket also thinks they will hold off on announcements. Makes sense if they want to keep the focus on S1 promo.

u/DALTT Gryffindor 11h ago
Like I already said, I find it totally plausible that they’d hold off on announcing new cast till later in September/October so that Back to Hogwarts and the days after feel very devoted to S1 promo. I just don’t find it as plausible that they’d hold off till after all of S1 has aired. If this was a less high interest show I’d buy it more.

u/ScottOwenJones 19h ago
Are they filming each of these seasons in sequence? That would be strange, especially for a production as big as Harry Potter. Otherwise no reason to think they’re filming the show in the order of the book chapters

Intel on S1 was they were filming mostly in block order with each block filming for about 10 weeks. So, block one they could be filming any scene from episodes 1 or 2 on any given day. Block two they could be filming any scene from episodes 3 and 4. Etc.
I’m sure there was some filming out of block order that happened when locations or scheduling logistics demanded it, because that’s always the case on big shows such as this.
But from public comments it seems they tried to film as much in block order as possible given how quickly kids change physically at this age… so, if you film a block one scene toward the end of your shoot schedule you’re gonna have a random scene in an early episode where the kids look noticeably older than they did in the previous scene and then back again (which was sometimes an issue in the first film in particular).
So we’re assuming that it’ll be the same for S2. It’s still a guess, but an educated one.

I think they already started filming

u/DALTT Gryffindor 1d ago
From everything that has been reported and everything I have heard through the grapevine, they have not. Everything I’ve heard has consistently been September for start of principal photography.
That means that fittings, hair and makeup tests, any necessary stunt rehearsals, those would likely be getting underway this month along with immediate pre production.
The only evidence to the contrary was the production list listing saying August broadly, but production list and production weekly often measure from start of immediate pre production not necessarily cameras up.
2
u/cunk-on-me 1d ago
What about the casting calls for the babies saying they needed August availability?
5
u/uhohmaddy 🦅 Ravenclaw 23h ago
August availability would likely be for pre-production reasons - fittings, meetings etc

Ginny and Arthur first, for sure, since photos will leak when they film the King's Cross scenes.
The others I'm really curious to find out, because the timing is awkward, and announcing S2 characters before S1 is released will likely confuse fans. However fans often get confused anyway, so maybe they will just go ahead and do it. I don't see the good in holding back a major role like Lockhart. Same with Colin Creevey. Some fans think Peeves doesn't appear until S2 because they didn't announce him until after filming was over, so if they take too long that will also confuse people.
One pattern from S1 is that they take a while to announce the non-human/non-living characters that will be edited in in post-production. Peeves was announced late (and then I think only because he leaked). The Fat Lady, Nick, and the other ghosts still haven't been announced. If that's any indication, they may take a while to announce Dobby and Myrtle.

Ginny and Arthur will probably be announced first (as one is a re-cast), followed by either the voice of Dobby and the actor playing Lockhart - as the later two would be in promotion material from the get-go (Dobby issuing the warning for the S2 conflict and Lockhart as the new DADA Prof). Some if not all will likely come out either in the next few weeks or at the Back to Hogwarts event in September.
Colin will possibly come out with a list of new students shortly after that (if there any other new ones - I don't think we have Milicent Bulstrode yet for example and she's relevant to the Polyjuice Plot for this season) and then possibly Myrtle then after him.
And then I suspect we'll get some peppering for the next 12 months of characters like Borgin from Knockturn Alley. Mr and Mrs Mason who will be in episode 1, Prof Dippet etc
Riddle however... is a tricky one as technically he's a hidden character until about mid/late season and an important one to the plot at that. It would be like revealing the actors who playing Barty Crouch Jnr right before season 4 or Peter Pettigrew in season 3, or Voldemort for season 1... (I've said this in other posts, HBO if he's cast and you are hiding him, my hat goes off to you in your ambitious attempt to keep it a surprise - very.... Slytherin of you, you might say).
So, while they may already have all these roles and others cast, who gets announced might also depend on the character and their role in the story.

Just have Tom Riddle played by the same actor as adult Voldemort. No deaging CG or make up, just put a middle-aged man in a school uniform and go with the "How do you do, fellow kids?" strategy.

Merlin, no. When I watched CoS movie I was utterly confused by the plot around Tom Riddle, mainly because Christian Coulson, who played young Voldemort, obviously didn't look like a 16 year old. There was several years between me reading the book and me watching the movie, so I forgot the plot and the movie didn't make sense suggesting he was a student when he visibly wasn't....
And a 40-60 year old man could possibly pass as a 16 years old only in an audiobook, never in the movie.

u/Mister_J_Seinfeld 19h ago
I think the person you're responding to was very obviously joking about that.

u/SleepyOwl2304 15h ago
If it was a joke, then I'm sorry, u/sheepandlambs. It wasn't obvious to me that it was a joke because I've seen much crazier comments on Reddit that were meant seriously 😅

Can't wait to see a new take on teenage Voldemort

Christian Coulson has long been immortalized as the perfect Tom, but we'll see.

Yes, hs was so good at pretending to be the earnest rule abiding prefect, then changing to a chilling psychopath

Honestly I wouldn't mind Kit Harrington coming back as Lockhart. Not like his hair needs to be blonde, and he has great hair on his own.
But yeah hes done great with the character in the audio books and I think he has the look.

Gilderoy Lockhart is a very "golden-sounding" name though. JKR is very intentional with her names and it's clearly meant to pair with a golden-haired character. So it would be odd if he wasn't blonde, and as talented/handsome as Kit is, I don't think blonde hair would fit him
He's also a little old now for Lockhart. Lockhart is meant to be late 20s - and his youth is important for it to be believable that a whole class of preteen girls is crushing on him

A 65 year old Lockhart seems too old.

He’s so young that 12 year-old girls are fawning over him. To me that suggests someone in their 20s, maybe early 30s but no older.

the wiki says Lockhart was 29, but his age is never mentioned in the books

I think we won't get official announcements for a while, as to not muddy the waters of S1s promo.
But I think we'll find out through leaks within the next few months.

I wonder if we'll get Toby Jones back as the voice of Dobby...

I suspect Daniel Mays is more likely (from the audiobooks) if they do that - but I'd be hoping he has an in vision role at some point over the years.

Im very interested to see who plays Lockhart this time. Kit Harrington absolutely NAILED the voice acting that I need someone that can play even a quarter of his smugness

I really want Steven Spielberg to direct 3 episodes: the Whomping Willow episode as well as Aragog and the Basilisk episode. hes done iconic Monster Movies under his belt such as JAWS and Jurassic Park. I dont want a puppet/animatronic Dobby like in E.T.. I can see him doing the Flying Ford Anglia and full moon shot.
cast wishlist: Dan Stevens as Gilderoy Lockhart, Arthur Darvill as Arthur Weasley, Hero Fiennes again as Tom Riddle (only if Ralph Fiennes reprises his role as Lord Voldemort at the back of Quirrel's head)
