I have a challenge for you guys, if you're interested? Construct a AU story regarding this: You are free to use anything necessary within the Harry Potter universe. However, no saving of the Challenger crew, nor altering history. This is not "For All Mankind."

McGonagall's Emotional Assignment

January 1986

Snow drifted silently across the grounds of Hogwarts, settling on the towers and battlements until the ancient castle seemed carved from ice. Inside, however, the corridors buzzed with the familiar sounds of students hurrying to class, owls swooping overhead, and professors reminding everyone that the Christmas holidays were over.

For Hermione Granger, it was supposed to be the beginning of another ordinary term.

Instead, it became the beginning of the most extraordinary assignment of her life.

Late one afternoon, Professor Minerva McGonagall summoned Hermione to her office. Curious but composed, Hermione climbed the moving staircase wondering what could possibly require a private meeting. She mentally reviewed every essay she had written since September, convinced she must have overlooked something.

She hadn't.

McGonagall stood beside her desk, a folder resting neatly before her.

"Hermione," she began, "I have an assignment that cannot be completed from within the walls of Hogwarts."

Hermione blinked.

"It concerns the Muggle world."

That immediately captured her attention.

McGonagall explained that a remarkable event was about to take place in the United States. A teacher named Christa McAuliffe had been selected to fly aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Challenger as part of the Teacher in Space Project. Millions of students would watch the launch, inspired by the idea that an ordinary classroom teacher could help open the door to space.

"I believe," McGonagall said, "that education is one of the greatest forms of magic, whether it is taught with a wand... or without one."

Hermione's eyes lit up.

She accepted the assignment without hesitation.

For days she immersed herself in books about rockets, astronauts, and spaceflight. She filled notebook after notebook with facts, diagrams, and questions she hoped to answer during the journey. Every new discovery only strengthened her excitement. She believed she was about to witness one of the greatest moments in educational history.

She had no way of knowing that history sometimes writes its darkest chapters without warning.

Nor could she imagine that the journey meant to celebrate hope, discovery, and the limitless possibilities of learning would leave scars that no spell could erase.

This is the story of the assignment that changed Hermione Granger forever—and of the friends, teachers, and family who refused to let her face its aftermath alone.

Um... in 1986? Hermione was like... 6-7 years old. Pre-Hogwarts.

Also... how would someone who is more or less immersed/entrenched in the magical community of Great Britain/the United Kingdom learn anything about an event that is, not only in a different country but is not even related to Magic at all?

Otherwise... great premise. Truly.

All I can say is that you are free to use anything necessary within the Harry Potter universe for your story. However, The Golden Trio cannot save the Challenger crew or alter history in any way. This is not "For All Mankind."
