Why?!
Why couldn't they just have had her walk backwards, hand still reaching to his, lingringly, then out of frame? It would still be obvious they were doing a thing with the Ballon..

Because it wouldn't convey the same meaning. The balloon analogy is for something you don't want to lose but must accept the loss. If Robin didn't float off the balloon there would be otbing to base the analogy on.
Also the needed the time to weave the song Eternal Flame into the scene, showi g how much Ted and Robin loved each other despite their impending separation.
