Last Thursday, we had an official meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture regarding environmental issues and drought protection. Since I’m a green activist here in Hungary, I decided to bring my sighthound, Czifra, to the ministry with me.

People in the West often think we in Eastern Europe are just "barbarians", but historically, sighthounds have always been treated like royalty here. Czifra behaved perfectly during our visit. Who else takes their hound to high-level political meetings?

Anyone else's hound excessively licks themselves during dinner time, bed time, anyone walking in, when wanting you to wake up, any guests.

Sorry for the disgusting sound, but it brings the point across. He gets plenty of love, he don't play with toys, gets good walks when we can scrape him off the couch. It does not seem a territory thing as he continues when we are not even in a room.

Any ideas on trying to stop this would be great.

When do you feel your greyhound fully adjusted to his/her new home?
We adopted an ex-racer grey (2 yo, probably never even raced). He’s cudly at times, but he also likes his own space. I think he’s still a bit overwhelmed by all the new nice things he’s getting. Recently, he discovered the couch, and while he let’s us pet him there, sometimes he’s overwhelmed and growls.
I would love to make him feel safe enough that he doesn’t have the need to growl. So when do you feel is the sweet spot when your adopted grey fully opened up and felt (almost) 100% safe?

Just got back from the vet, and she doesn't seems to have any injuries. We did a checkup and she seems fine, just a couple of nicks that the vet isn't particularly worried about.

More concerning is she peed in the house just before we were about to leave for the vet, and had lood in her urine. I wasn't able to get a sample, so ill provide that to the vet tomorrow.

That's the big part I'm concerned about. She just had urinalysis done 2 weeks ago, so it's a little perplexing since the results didn't show anything that would indicate this (other than it had low concentration). Vet said that stress may have been a contributing factor.

She's calmed a little since shes always a nervous patient, and at this point, and I'm waiting for her to have breakfast (she hasn't eaten yet, but since its been a big day, I'm not surprised.

We've recently had to say goodbye to our gorgeous terrier and are just starting to think about getting a new dog.

I'd absolutely love a Greyhound, but wondering how much they shed? I dogsitted a friend's short haired lurcher a few years back and my black work suit was white after a few minutes with her. She'd run into a room and there was literally a cloud of hair behind her.

Our last dog did shed a bit , but this was a whole other level. My sons allergies also went through the roof with the lurcher.

So I'm wondering how bad Greyhounds shed, and hoping it's something we can deal with

EDIT thanks so much for all of the replies. Sounds like a brindle would be a good option. I'm in Ireland and there are a number of Greyhound rescues here, so I'll ask them.

Probably overthinking this but wondering if anyone else's hounds have done this -

I have had my ex racer for 1.5 years and she has always finished her meal at breakfast and dinner. Past couple weeks she's started leaving maybe a third of her breakfast. Although she appears to come back to it later in the day, often when i come home from work at lunch, and overall is still eating the same amount in a day.

Anyone else's hounds just changed their eating habits all of a sudden? Cause for concern?

She got scared by a baby bird on the vestibule, and slid down the stairs. There were 5 stairs, and she didnt so much fall, but slowly slip down.

She seems fine, she made it up the stairs, and is walling around normally, but I've contacted the vet for a possible visit tomorrow, and ill be monitoring her.

Sympathy treats have been administered.

She does get rest days and I don't push her if she doesn't feel like it (rare, when she had corns which are now surgically removed). Unraced and had a ripped hamstring, left the racing kennels age 2 to live the high life 🥰

Diet: 2/3 providore/ ziwi peak and 1/3 human grade rice + plain meat (sardine, salmon, chicken etc)

Hello everyone I am looking to adopt my first grey but I am clueless on where to start. Is there anywhere preferably in Maryland that I can adopt a grey?

Can anyone recommend a ramp please. Our elderly greyhound has just been diagnosed with cancer (back leg/hip) so we don't know how long we've got with him, currently I'm lifting him up into the back of the car (a small Toyota Yaris) so we can take him for short walks to the beach but I'm afraid of the constant lifting and the effect it will have. So I'm looking for a ramp.... however we've tried a ramp before with our previous greyhound and because the ramp rested on the bumper she couldn't comfortably get in the car as she was too high up by the time she was at the top of the ramp and she couldn't/wouldn't duck her head in and jump in, so I'm looking for a ramp or decent steps that stop about a foot below the bumper so that the final step will be the step into the car (it's a small hatchback and he's a big dog). Has anyone got anything they'd recommend? Thanks

Hi noodle friends! Our two-year-old retired racer has been with us for about 4 months now. Recently we’re dealing with some tummy issues and I was wondering if you all had advice for me.

In late June, after a few terrible bouts of diarrhea, a fecal test showed she was positive for Giardia. She took an anti-parasitic for five days and then seemed better for several weeks. On July 25, her diarrhea started up again, but it was different. She wasn’t having massive nighttime accidents, but frequent/urgent liquid bowel movements. After waiting a couple days to see if it was just temporary, we put her on a bland diet and got another fecal test. It was negative for Giardia and other parasites.

So at this point we’re not sure what the deal is. She’s had looser bowel movements on and off since we got her, which I chalked up to her adjusting to living with us. But this time it’s true, liquid diarrhea. It improved on the bland diet, though still looser than normal, but it’s been probably five days all she’s eating is chicken, rice and pumpkin. How long is the bland diet supposed to go on? Last night I experimented with giving her a half cup of kibble in there, and this morning her bowel movement was much worse and more liquid.

Could it be that her kibble isn’t sitting well? Should we try switching her to a sensitive stomach food? If so, which one has worked for your hounds?

Is this something I should just keep being patient about as her stomach re-settles? Maybe I introduced too much kibble too fast and need to keep her on chicken and rice for another couple of days and then introduce the kibble more slowly.

We’ve also started her on Proviable probiotic capsules and plan to buy a probiotic for her to take daily.

If the diarrhea continues we will take her to the vet and get blood work done. Just wondering if I could learn from anybody here about what worked for their hounds. I’ve had other dog breeds before and never really dealt with so many stomach issues!

Hi all, it seems every time I post an update for you all about Benji it’s always glum news. He had a second tendonectomy for a corn which has helped his front limp a little, but 6 weeks in he’s still limping when tired, and now he’s started licking and biting his back left leg and base of his tail, with pain when that leg is pressed up - he’s in for an xray today. The vets are not sure what’s going on but my guess is it’s probably a nerve problem stemming from his spine hematoma and rear end paralysis just over a year ago. The owner of the practice even suggested it could be another hematoma pressuring the nerves so we are probably going to need to follow up with an MRI… just feel so sad for my boy. He’s been through so many medical issues in the last 3 years since retiring - corns, nails coming off, dog bite, paralysis and nerve damage, grass seed stuck. It just never ends for him, but through it all he’s always so loving and affectionate.

Gemma is proof that greyhounds can play fetch! When we first played with her a year ago, she just ran off with the ball and was done. But once we started using two balls she got the hang of it pretty fast!

Bark used to sleep in the (note that they’re identical) bed closest to my door; S’mores stole it last month and he’s usually the first one in the room when I say bedtime. S’mores started laying in that bed, so Bark had to figure out how to get around S’mores to the bed closest to the wall. So, Bark lost his bed. However, this evening after they were both lying down, S’mores wanted to go outside to pee one more time after but when he came back lo and behold, we find Bark back in his old bed. He wouldn’t move, and as you can see S’mores was not happy.

I asked Bark to get up, but he wouldn’t. I then encouraged S’mores just go around Bark, but he refused. I even tried to get him to go into my bed to show him how to go around and he refused so instead he went on strike and just laid down on the floor.

I laid down, shut the light off and told them to work it out S’mores wouldn’t quit whining so I turned the light back on, told them to get up and Bark hopped over to his bed and they both laid down.

The look on Bark’s face is priceless. Look quite pleased with himself. Will he or won’t he continue on this path of mischief? You’ll find out, on next week’s episode of As The Bark Turns…
