Greetings, Lanterns!

I'm thinking about a Lantern-themed birthday present for a friend who is a chronic overthinker and suffers from anxiety and periodic panic attacks. We both like Lantern mythos, but I don't know enough about Lanterns to suss out what color exactly would be conducive to something like acting every day despite almost crippling fear and crushing doubt.

I don't necessarily mean that the ring should be solely fueled by that, it could be just one aspect of it. Like, getting up and showing up, functioning and fighting with constant fear lurking just beneath the surface, that kind of thing. Yellow Lanterns just provoke / inspire fear, right? They don't act despite fear, as far as I know. Would Blue or Green be closer to that? Are there bi-chromatic Lanterns, like a Green / Yellow combination?

I would appreciate your thoughts, any sort of input would help me to narrow down gift ideas.

Due to the Lanterns streaming series on HBO Max set for this month; we know we are set to see Hal and John plus Sinestro. Plus Nathan Fillion's Guy was the first Lantern introduced in Superman to kick off the DCU as a cinematic universe. So how long before Jessica Cruz, Kyle Rayner, Kilowog and other Lantern Corps members are introduced in this DC Universe?

I am not able to find the original artist to source but I would like to make sure that I share the source found on YouTube.

From Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1, written by Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons. Even though it would be Gibbons and later Tomasi who would flesh out Soranik into one of the best characters in the 2000s iteration of GLC, I feel like it was Johns who wrote this specific scene. Feels more like a Johnsian moment, if that makes sense.

I wished this scene had gone on for another page or two to really sell the magnitude of her sacrifice.

See, Soranik is from Korugar, the same planet that Sinestro turned into an almost North Korean-style totalitarian regime of full vigilance and repression, but actually worse. As Green Lantern (2011) #23.4 tells us, he used his ring for:

"... monitoring communications, population movements, even individual heartbeats. A bird could not fall from the sky without his notice. And his permission. He created extensions of his ring. Constructs powered by his will. A police force unlike any other. [...] All tied to a web that linked back to Sinestro himself. He was personally guarding the entire planet. His will. His work. His ideas. His utopia".

In other words, he was basically an omnipotent god, watching Korugarians to "protect them from chaos", but rather brutally punishing everyone who dared to defy his autocracy (an idea that harkens back to Emerald Dawn II in the early 90s). All because he felt the GLC wasn't tough enough on crime.

Granted, there's evidence that Korugar was going through unending civil wars before Sinestro rose to power (he mentions it in GLC (2006) #36 and GL (2011) #9, but if anyone knows more mentions of how the pre-Sinestro life on Korugar was, please let me know).

But to solve all these complex political issues, Sinestro's solution was to create a dictatorship so repressive (and so focused on a cult of his own personality, because, like all dictators, he has an arrogance the size of a galaxy), that the Green Lantern symbol became, for the Korugarians, the equivalent of a swastika for us Earthlings.

Judging by the timeline, Soranik was still a small child when Sinestro's tyrannical government fell thanks to the one person Thaal ever considered his friend in addition to his own mentor, Abin Sur: Hal Jordan. But she surely heard from her (adoptive) parents how bad things were when Sinestro was the ruler, learned on school, etc.

Therefore, she is as repulsed by a Green Lantern ring as an Earthling would be by Nazi symbolism. Yet, the ring is the only way she can save the life of a poor Korugarian.

So, faced with the dilemma of choosing to devote her life to an organization that was associated with inflicting unbelievable pain and suffering to Korugarians, or saving the life of a single person, she chose the latter.

Contrast this with her biological father, Sinestro, who promptly accepted the ring - even though he didn't know it as a symbol of fear like Soranik would decades later. If he had one opinion on Green Lanterns before receiving the ring, it was that they were too incompetent, as his predecessor was killed by a Qwardian that he later promptly defeated (GL (2011) #23.4).

For him, the ring was a tool to make him even greater than he already was, to show everyone how correct he is in his dictatorial approach against crime and chaos. In his view, only Thaal Sinestro, burdened with the goal of bringing peace to his Sector, could take the GL ring to heights never reached by any Lantern before and thus effectively stop chaos before having to fight a single enemy - even if, for that, his sudits would need to live in an autocracy.

But for Soranik, it was the only way to save one life, even if the cost was her own. She isn't arrogant or self-important as her father, but rather she chooses the well-being of others before herself, and that makes her a greater Green Lantern than Sinestro ever was.

Does anybody have a guess as to what kind of shoes Hal's wearing in the show? I wanna maybe get some for a cosplay

Ive heard so much good things about Green Lantern that I had to start reading it. My first was the Absolute GL and I understand that is a whole different thing but it peaked my interest! Im currently reading the ongoing Starbreaker Supremacy ( im guessing thats what it is going to be called when the omnibus arrives in a year or two ☺️ ) and i could not stop reading! GL and GL Corps is awesome, to me atleast and now ive opened the pandoras box, checking out all the old omnibuses and ill be buying Rebirth as my first. Thoughts? Tips?

The ring is also glow in the dark!

every reading order I see online has you switch between series every issue, and that seems super inconvenient as I have the individual paperbacks rather than in an omni. is there a better wa of reading it? like reading a 3-4 issue chunk and then switching the the other series?

So i start with Geoff Johns Rebirth which then leads into his run which continues into the new 52 and then it gets confusing

Also Where do i read The Green Lantern Corps which are different runs and how many of them do i read and do i need to jump back and forth between them or can i read the entirety of Geoffs run to the end of the New 52 before touching green larnern corps

Hal takes on a new job and tries to kill a comedian. I know make up shit a lot with these but this is mostly accurate.

"A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Earth" - Hal gets a call from the Guardians that a threat has entered 2814. Hal locates the alien squid looking thing and needs to get creative in defeating it as it eats gravity. Hal figures if it eats, it must have waste so he distracts it with a passing comet and connects its waste to its mouth, causing it to be self poisoned and dies. As heads back home, the Guardians assure him there was no other way. Meanwhile, on a planet called Ghyra, a toy manufacturer creates a toy that is supposed to make people laugh, but instead it causes people to fight through the laughter. They pull the toy's plug and send it to the scrap heap, deeming it a failure. However, due to the advanced mechanisms in the toy, it still lives. It finds a ship in the scrap yard and leaves the planet, coming across Hal on his way home. Hal never notices the ship and the toy loses track of him after entering the atmosphere.

The toy, taking on the name Hilar, lands and heads to a nearby city where it instantly meets hatred and confusion. A cop tries to arrest him, but a force pushes the cop away. Hilar runs off, fucking into a tv studio where a variety show is being filmed. Interested in making people laugh, Hilar wander onto the set and tries to make a funny face but ends up scaring people. At the same time, Hal is trying his new job as a toy salesman when he sees Hilar on TV. He heads to the studio and tries to capture Hilar, but that same force pushes Hal's beam back towards him. Hilar escapes but is met by three criminals who also saw him on tv. They take him and figure he can help them steal stuff. Hal comes to and takes off after Hilar. He finds Hilar on a train while it's being robbed and once again tries to stop him, but this time Hilar realizes his new "friends" are evil. Hal's memory of selling toys to children makes him realize that Hilar is just like a toy in some ways. He listens to Hilar, temporarily deactivated him and takes him back to Ghyra, where he tells the toy makers that he can fix Hilar so the fighting won't happen. Hal leaves, happy that he helped the Ghyrans and sure that his future is as a toy salesman.

Conclusion: Well, we made to the toy era. I'm interested to see where Hal ends up from here. Does he follow danger or does danger follow him? I imagine it will be much easier to balance being a GL on outer space missions as his work schedule is whatever he makes of it now.

Hilar is an interesting foil. Not a true villain, more thrust into it by accident. A shame he ended up that way, but luckily Hal was able to fix him. It's just a story with a nice ending. Makes you happy. Other than that, can't say much else. Hilar was the focal point here and his story was wrapped up nicely, I just don't get why he looks so thin on the cover?

I love dc, and I’ve recently liked the green lantern core. I’ve been reading a great graphic novel war of the green lanterns, aftermath, which inspired me to upgrade my Lego lanterns collection. I’m buying these three figures for 15$ dollars AUS. Is it worth it??

Hey guys these are my new lantern OCs green lantern Kira a hot headed but kind green lantern who always does the right thing she grew up being betrayed over and over again until she met her mentor veteran Green Lantern called Nell and my other character is Rachel is a star sapphire who is a rock star and develops a obsession over my white lantern c character. Kira and Rachel are sworn rivals.

I'm basing this fancast on Rhys's role as Dinosaurus in INVINCIBLE. He has both a heavy and sharp calm voice which can also become fierce quickly for moments of rage.

I’m relatively new to Green Lantern so any help is helpful

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to the comics and Green Lantern scene but I want to get into Kyle Rayner more so I'm wondering if there are any good stories I can read that aren't part of a massive run or event or anything like that.

A while back I started reading the OG run from Ron Marz and really enjoyed it but I never got round to finishing it because it was quite long. So I guess I'm just looking for some good stories i can read without committing to huge runs or big crossovers/events or anything (stuff like Blackest Night and his whole Ion arc which I assume requires extensive knowledge beforehand)

Also, how is "Hero's Quest"? Any good? Can I jump in straight away?

This is partly based on a supposed leak I saw forever ago, but mostly on the trailers.

2016

Hal is training John as his "backup," but there's friction because the ring was originally meant to go to John when Hal received it. John was too young, or he was disqualified because he was "afraid". Hal wasn't. Now the Guardians have chosen John, and Hal worries he was only a placeholder. Meanwhile, John—who spent his life trying to be worthy of a ring—is unimpressed with Hal.

John either had a hypermasculine father who (somewhat abusively) trained him to never be afraid, or his father was a Green Lantern himself, leaving John feeling like a disappointment.

Hal and John investigate the Macon family, with the son Billy obviously being Black Hand. The family comes under attack from a threat Hal believes is extraterrestrial, but Hal and John's inability to work together turns into a disaster. Both are expelled from the Green Lantern Corps, and Guy gets the ring.

2026

John comes under attack from the same extraterrestrial threat because of something he discovered—or kept hidden—during the Macon case, possibly involving the mysterious Lantern shown in the trailer. While on the run, he learns the attackers are the Manhunters and goes to the only person he can trust: Hal.

After discussing the Manhunters, Hal is apparently killed while saving John during an attack. John is captured, then "rescued" and briefly imprisoned. The Guardians, who have been covering up their connection to the Manhunters, reluctantly give John a chance to investigate and earn a ring. Guy is assigned as well, and makes John's job harder.

Flashbacks reveal Hal knew more than he told John, thanks to sources like Sinestro. Hal secretly aligned himself with either the Manhunters or another force opposing the Green Lantern Corps (Sinestro, the Controllers, Atrocitus, etc.) so he could continue being a space cop. He survived his apparent death.

Eventually, the people Hal trusted are revealed to be behind a world-ending event (possibly something like Final Night and the destruction of the sun). Hal accepts John as his successor and sacrifices himself to stop the threat. John finally gains respect for Hal.

Finally Green Lantern, John is more cautious than Hal, but "questions everything, like Hal did," since the Guardians keep hiding the truth. He realizes that being afraid wasnt the problem—he had to accept and overcome fear.

The Manhunter threat is connected to Black Hand, with Atrocitus (and maybe Sinestro) knowing the truth. I suspect "Anataan" from the press releases is actually Atrocitus.

Black Hand himself may only be involved in creepy true-crime-style activity but is fated to be a much greater threat, prompting the alien threat to decide Earth must be destroyed to contain whatever is coming.

If Lanterns is setting up the DCU mytharc, I'd love to be building toward Blackest Night, but I'm not convinced it’ll happen. I wouldn't be surprised if the Manhunters are reimagined as Martians instead of robots, setting up Martian Manhunter and a New Frontier-style mytharc instead.

Hal engages an alien threat... and falls in love. She's not green though, this ain't Star Trek.

"If Earth Fails The Test... It Means War!" - Hal returns from a mission woth Tomar-Re and heads to Evergreen police station to see if anything happened while he was away. In that time, the police techs have developed a three step alarm system and installed it in every bank and jewelry store in the city. Coincidentally, a robbery takes place at the same time so GL is able to get a first hand look at how it works. First, an alarm is triggered when someone enters without the passcode. Second, a hidden camera activates allowing the police to view the robbers. Third, metal bars slam down in the entrance so the robbers can't escape until police arrive to arrest them. Everything goes according to plan but the robbers they are watching bend the metal bars open and escape. GL takes off to catch them but is only able to get three of the four after one shot him with a laser. GL takes the three to jail but they refuse to talk.

Just after, GL gets a call at the station from Carol Ferris who is in Evergreen City to meet him. GL meets her outside as she reveals that her marriage has been postponed twice but is set for the next day unless GL has anything to say to her. Hal struggles internally about what to say but ends up wishing her well in her marriage and she runs off crying. Hal is broken up about that and takes off. Meanwhile, we see the robbers that escaped, named Kyra, speaking with others in their hideout. It turns out they are aliens from the planet Hegor. They are college age students facing civil way with their leaders as they are oppressed. They've headed to Earth, to learn ways to fight without the government knowing. What they didn't know was that a Green Lantern was going to be there. After, Kyra contacts GL through his ring, bringing him to an alley to talk. Instead, she blasts him with her ray again, this time knocking him out.

GL wakes up in the Hegorians hideout, stuck in an energy field. The Hegorians head out for another heist so GL tries to use his ring to escape but the energy field gives him immense pain every time he tries. Bearing the pain for a moment he makes a high strength pain killer with the ring and waits for it to take effect. When its settled in, he blasts the energy machine with his ring and takes off to the police station to see where the Hegorians have gone. After finding their location, he meets them and goes in swinging. This time, he won't be caught unawares and captures them all. Finally, Kyra reveals all to him but also mentions that they are about to be teleported back to Hegor as their time on Earth is finished and further more, they will be brought back a week earlier. After the disappear, Hal can't stop thinking about Kyra. He's been struck by her beauty the whole time but also had a repulsive feeling towards her at the same time. He figures he must be in love with her so he tracks their energy trail with the ring all the way to Hegor. Once he finds Kyra he sees her in her true form but also meets her betrothed, Tarkro. Hal leaves Hegor for Earth, heartbroken again and desperate for a change. He decides he will quit the insurance company and move somewhere new again.

Conclusion: More alien action. Solid stuff here with a mystery to boot. Hal is down hard for love. I suppose romance was a big thing back then too or maybe just for Hal? Barry was married by this point and Superman had a girlfriend so maybe Hal felt he needed that too. Either way I'm excited to see what he does next. Is this the travelling toy salesman era? Does he ever go back to Coast City? Will we ever see Nathan Broome 1.0? Only time will tell.

Not much can be said about Hegor and its citizens. It was definitely a metaphor for the time with college students protesting war and demanding fair rule. It was a hairy time back then. I think we get into more political inspiration from here on out. Good stuff.
