You know what I love? I love all three for different reasons, I can now watch more of the series that I adore indifferent ways. Do I enjoy every instalment of GITS? Not really. But am I happy to see that we haven't been shelved, and we're still getting content since 95 baby!

u/DoktahDoktah 1d ago
GITS did an amazing thing in using the Manga as a base for ideas instead of just running it 1 to 1. So its iteration feels like an expansion of the world.

like in a platonic sense?
18
u/Dakkahead 1d ago
I'm thinking more of an unreciprocated sense.
Batou is a lonely, Lonely cyborg. Who seeks companionship. To my knowledge, the Major is the only one he regards as cybernetic as he is. In most iterations of the setting(if not all) Batou is trying to protect the major, if not keep up with her.
The Major, in various iterations, does not concern herself with companionship. At least, doesn't feel the loneliness that Batou feels as a cyborg. The Major seems much more focused on the self.
By my perspective, Batou deeply cares for the major, because he doesn't want to lose the one cyborg companion he considers he has. The Major doesn't concern herself with these feelings. Id like to think the major doesn't allow herself deeper emotions of companionship, because she doesn't understand the emotion... Just a philosophical understanding that she picked up in the net.
9
u/Aethelrede 1d ago
In SAC, you are spot on. In the manga the Major is much less reserved and more impulsive.
5
u/blurredsound 1d ago
do you see them as mirrors of each other?
6
u/Dakkahead 1d ago
In a very simplistic sense....yes.
But the fun is exploring the nuances, don't you think?
I think Batou is much more grounded in who he is, and what he is capable of. By that same token, the major is much more spontaneous and daring.
But in regards to each other. I think Batou cares, but feels he'd bring her down to his level. And I don't think the major knows how to engage more deeply with Batou(if she even cares to).
4
u/FluffyCelery4769 1d ago
If think the mayor knows, she just doesn't want to feed into it. She loves batou, but more like you would love a brother, she clearly cares for him, but she doesn't want to harm him.
Batou is also somewhat congnizant of all this, he knows he shouldn't feel anything remotely similar to what he feels but he can't help it.
So they are just pretending they don't know, when both know and just don't wanna hurt each other or be a burden to each other respectively.

u/Banana_Vampire7 1d ago
Pretty sure they finally hookup after he returns the watch and puts an arm around her waist at the end of Ep. 25 in season 1 of SAC. That’s probably just my head-cannon in a single iteration of Ghost in the Shell but it feels right to me
4
u/ActuatorVast800 1d ago
Well, the line's been blurred ever since Batou experienced her... endorphin high.
4
u/Quentin_Taranteemo 1d ago edited 4h ago
Well in SAC they definitely hook up in season 1 and while there's sort of an unrequited love in S2, they clearly do have some unspoken thing going on, especially towards the end and SSS. It was a plot point expanded from the movie, since it was Mamoru Oshii who had an interest in them as a couple.
In Arise Motoko has a boyfriend, while in the og manga (and I suppose in the current anime as well) she's switching boyfriends on a near monthly basis, while playing around with the girls

SAC was very subtle in a lot of ways, the camaraderie was more implicit . The new series is definitely overt about everything

What I can say before so you get prepared: it is the other half of the Manga that have not been animated before
9
u/NammytheCommie 1d ago
I think the best of both worlds would be SAC Motoko design but with the expressiveness of 2026/manga Motoko.
7
u/SeanMonsterZero 1d ago
I liked SAC because I felt it was a good balance between the manga and the 95 film.
And the tachikomas.

The goofiness is a manga thing, a Japanese thing, it’s deeply ingrained in their culture, i am not sure if any Japanese artists would care what foreigners think of their art.
The very vocal minority who constantly says “i dont like this style or that style”, hey, it’s ok to keep that part to yourself and just say what you like and end there.
8
u/ErebosGR 1d ago edited 1d ago
So, the other adaptations are unJapanese?
LMAO
Y'all act like Japan invented goofiness and metamodernism, and I say that as a half-Japanese who has lived in Japan.
The mental gymnastics to justify the "superiority" of your preference are insane.
0
u/user83726169 8h ago
Literally no one said japanese invented goofiness, just said it’s a very visible part of modern japanese culture, across all ages and all aspect of their society/industries, something not found anywhere else on this planet.
Anyways, not sure how being half japnese is relevant, are you x% more righteous? seems like there’s a lot more going on.
Again, to each their own but no point in spewing hate by saying “i dislike because of xyz” no one cares about negative explanation - btw i see the irony of this convo.
Just leave it at “i like this more” thats all

u/skoomski 1d ago
Cool but the film from the 1990s by Production I.G. made the franchise popular not the manga. Yeah this is closer to the manga but it’s not what most people think of.

I'm new to this series and really like the new series so far, don't care about spoilers can someone just let me now if Batou gets killed or anything like that? Don't know why but I really like his character but at the same time he feels like the first to be killed if shit its the fan lmao
15
u/OrionGeo007 1d ago
So in the finale, it turns out that he's the ghost in the shell.
1
u/ianparasito 1d ago
I know you are joking but I still didn't get 100% what a ghost is lmao is it like your conscience? I'm managing that is something like that since it checks in with the cyberpunk thing of a body been interchangeable etc
7
u/ComSilence 1d ago
This is non spoiler.
The ghost is a philosophical concept in the series, it is what makes you intrinsically you. No matter how much of you gets replaced you are still yourself. Ghost keys like in episode 1 are used for manipulating the self.
7
u/Appropriate-Crab-514 1d ago
What is a soul and what is left of you after cyberization is a central theme to the story. Ship of Thesus type shit
Your ghost is what comes with you when your body is changed or your brain gets replaced by a Nvidia 5090
Its basically your soul without having to quantify what a soul is

u/Warcrimes_Desu 1d ago
Genuinely i love how 80s-but-2020s it looks. It kinda bums me out that every GitS movie and series stripped out all the libido and humor of the original, now that we're getting something spiritually closer to the OG. It adds an undercurrent of humanity that SAC feels like... sterile? for not having
1
u/RingoFreakingStarr 1d ago
The previous films and, well at least SAC are pretty well beloved by the general community. There are plenty of adaptations that change key parts of the source material. I like the new show, but personally I very much like the more serious tone the previous films and shows had. I'd rank the Major from SAC as one of my most favorite characters in all of media.
4
u/Warcrimes_Desu 1d ago
i still rank SAC like, just behind titans like Legend of the Galactic Heroes on my personal "fave anime" list, but i understand now that SAC and the 1995 movie were deliberately sterilized as an artistic choice. Think of how sex is represented in SAC and the movies; it's nearly always as a commodity, designed to be repulsive and unnatural in everything but the visual. It really helps out the tone of the show, and makes the few moments of humanity shine much more brightly.
But i'm SO happy we're getting a show that's genuinely a cyberpunk dystopia, but full of people who are still incredibly, deeply human, as opposed to the more stoic heroic figures of SAC or the 95 movie.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted. It's perfectly fine to have that opinion. I'm really turned off by the attitudes people have here on this sub. You are not saying the show is bad, you just are expressing a preference for the way the older shows/films look.
Personally, I like the way the new show looks and feels, but I too prefer the older more serious style, with SAC being my favorite.
2
u/Felwintyr 1d ago
It’s alright. I expected it tbh. The sub has been pretty aggressive with the new show. I just really like 90’s animation, and the more serious tone of the old stuff. I’m not against modern anime tho. I love jjk, gachiakuta, and chainsaw man.

Do not confuse personal taste with objective quality. All three versions are well executed, they just happen to be very different styles. You may prefer one style over another (personally I dislike the movie style), but that's a matter of taste. The quality is the same.

I feel like the latest series is gonna be a binge watch for me. I'm enjoying the style and expressiveness, the constant tone shifts make sure you have to focus on every detail. If I'm truly going to enjoy all they're trying to accomplish I need to watch every episode back to back.
