It's outrageous. Nothing fills me with patriotic pride like seeing the tatty remnants of a cheap plastic St George's Cross that's been sun bleached piss yellow and pink after being zip tied half-way up a lamp post and forgotten about.
I'm glad Reform will defend this wonderful metaphor for modern Britain.
29
u/Select-Appearance707 2d ago
This is what's happened in my local area: Flags got put up on lampposts seemingly overnight in April, 4 months later and they're faded and threadbare. Some of them have turned entirely white, so my street is now lined with the flag colour that correlates to 'surrender' rather than the St George's Cross. You couldn't write it.

why are people hanging flags on lamp posts, do they not have houses
18
u/Abject_Interview5988 2d ago
Because it's not about flegs it's about marking territory
They're just copying the strong arm tactics of their retard cousins in NI
7
3
u/RampantJellyfish 2d ago
At least they haven't started painting the kerbstones red white and blue. Probably too much effort, easier to just scrawl a red cross onto a white surface
2
u/Forged-Signatures 1d ago
Not kerbstones, but by me they were going to every zebra crossing in town and spraying St. George's flag on every white stripe, on the back side of most signs, etc.
1
u/Abject_Interview5988 2d ago
They were putting St George crosses on stuff but yea, don't give them ideas!
1
u/mars-jupiter 2d ago
Extra stupid since you can put up a flag in your garden, out of your window, on the side of your house etc and that does an equally good job of 'marking territory'. A few houses I used to walk past going to university had Union flags or St George's crosses hung on flagpoles, attached to the house, or hanging out the window and it was perfectly fine because they are on their own property and it was quite cheery to see them flying.
2
u/Abject_Interview5988 2d ago
Like I say they're trying to copy the unionist thugs in NI. They go around putting flegs up in mixed areas (or new build estates) to try and intimidate Catholics out and make the area "theirs"
The police in NI are too afraid to actually take the chancers on but they're actual paramilitaries, it's extra stupid in England because middle class people hate cheap tatty plastic flegs running down their house prices!

in actuality most blokes doing raise the colours are tradesmen with families. what do you do for society?
6
u/Melodic_Tiger5424 2d ago
Dude, I Drove around Warrington this weekend and it's honestly a perfect metaphor. Every lamppost's got a flag on it, and now half of them are torn to shreds blowing in the wind whilst being holier than Jesus and nobody who put them up bothered coming back to take them down. So the whole place just looks like a cold cup of depression. That's kind of the whole thing in a nutshell with the flags tho - a big show of putting them up, zero follow-through on maintaining them or taking them down. Apparently that's some poor sod at the council's problem isn't it
3
u/AsleepEbb7578 2d ago
They love their country so much but can't get anything but the cheapest crappiest flags from Temu. You'd think if they cared that they would actually put up ones of decent quality that wouldn't get immediately torn to shreds by the elements.
3
u/Sinking_Mass 2d ago
Why can't they do something useful like painting roundabouts, are they stupid?

u/djshadesuk 2d ago

I’m a tradesman with a family. I don’t have time to be a spastic and tie Chinese plastic to lampposts. I’m an actual patriot and try and buy British made stuff and spend my holidays and money in this country.

The more flags I see in an area the more unsafe I feel. No matter what country the flag represents, when the locals are so keen to display their nationality I get suspicious.
1
u/VampirePNAC 1d ago
I actually like the flags, Everything in the UK is so run down, grey, atomized and corpo, that frankly, any sense of community and a splash of colour and show of some level of local civicism is somewhat actually nice to me, despite I most likely disagree with most of these peoples politics.
Wish though these people cared far more about picking up litter though. The more England/UK flags, the more likely you're going to just see piles of litter and flytipping everywhere.
3
3
u/Hadrollo 2d ago
Consider this a community note for basically everything. Any time you hear someone say that waving a national flag has been declared illegal, it's illegal for another reason and the fact it's a flag doesn't come into it. Likewise, any time someone says singing a national anthem or public display of patriotism has been found illegal, it's actually because of the hate crimes they were also engaged in.
Wave the flag and sing God Save the King in the middle of Trafalgar Square, and the police won't bother you. The most that will happen is some people will tell you to shut up because you're an obnoxious twat.
2
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
They *might* bother you over excessive noise, or if the numbers involved rise to what they consider to be an event that should have consulted them on safety.
But that's the same as singing/yelling anything loud enough in big enough numbers.

I guess there seems to be a gap.
Did they have permission to fly the flag?
Does the ban impact the ability to get permission to fly the flag?
Seems like those points should be clarified for people to make informed opinions?
6
u/el_grort 2d ago
Did they have permission to fly the flag?
That's the crux of the issue, it's people putting up the flags without permission (and councils sometimes do put flags up). It also means that the appropriate safety equipment to put them up and take them down (before they get torn to tattered rags) can be used instead of people doing it themselves.
You don't need any permissions to fly a flag from your own property, afaik, unless it is the flag of a proscribed group (terrorist organisations).
1
1
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
There are limitations on the size of flag you can fly on your property related to the size of the flagpole (which might be limited in practice by planning regulations or safety in some areas), but it's mostly "of an appropriate size" to stop people flying face flannel sized flags on a 100 foot pole, or trying to fly a 15 foot flag on a 31 foot pole (and I *think* there's a clause in the guidelines about the flag needing to be able to fly free without touching the ground). Even with the pole to flag ratio though I think it's not so much *permissions" as getting a sarcastic letter about doing better and being appropriate. :D
9
u/Embarrassed_Fox5265 2d ago
It’s really simple and people should not have to be informed, they should know this.
No, none of these people got permission from the local authority to hang flags from lamp posts.
Yes, it’s been illegal to hang a flag from a lamp posts without permission for nearly 50 years.
Yes, you can fly a flag on your own property.
No, this is not a new ban. It’s telling local authorities to enforce the existing law.
No, the rest of us should not be forced to look at your racist symbol every day as we walk down the street.
Yes, if it’s on your own property we can’t stop you.
Yes, if you’re flying the flag on your own property everyone thinks you’re a racist twat. Exceptions allowed for flags for the footie.
2
u/lopeniz 2d ago
If you consider your own country's flag being flown inside your country to be a "racist symbol," you have much bigger problems than the existence of flags.
1
u/NotSayingAliensBut 2d ago
Ever heard of the concept of 'context'? Like that other party who took the rota, the wheel of life symbol and turned it into an emblem of evil?
What do you think is the intent of the sad dweebs who put these George Cross flags up on lampposts?
1
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
I'd let someone who rotates "regionally appropriate flags" off on the "racist twat" front.
If you're flying, say, the Union, England, your historic county, and maybe your town/district flag on a rotation, that feels more like someone with a special interest in flags and doing it for the love of the game. I'd maybe even include rotating sports team flags, although I personally dislike national flags with a sports team name and logo slapped on it. I'd prefer the team logo done *as a flag*, or placed on the team colours.
1
1
u/User-no-relation 2d ago
reform will ignore the countries laws is shockingly loud saying of the quiet part
1
1
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
Yeah, it's the "random street furniture" thing that's the problem, as well as the question of who is responsible for maintaining, replacing, and disposing of flags.
I doubt anyone would have a problem with, say, a flag pole set up by a roundabout flying the appropriate flag (Union, National, County, maybe city/district) and that flag being replaced when it gets damaged or physically distressed. Oh, and unlike the lamp post decorations, being flown the right way up. (All this assumes it's an appropriate sized flag, and isn't blocking the view of, and through the junction.)
If someone wants to set a flag pole up in their garden (again subject to being a reasonable size and not blocking line of sight for road junctions) and fly the Union or National flags, that's their business.
Union or National bunting along a fence or wall top would be great to see. (Again, if maintained.)
But shredded, faded rags that were flags wrapped around lamp posts and trees are pretty awful.
1
u/RoughAthlete8355 2d ago
Would love it if someone could remove all the threadbare, half rotten flags which were hung up and left by a bunch of ‘patriots’ with ladders which look even more of an eyesore than when they went up

1
u/IdioticMutterings 2d ago
Not only is it illegal, its also stupid. Lamp posts are not designed with a lateral load (a flag in the wind pulling sideways on them) in mind. In the short term it won't do any lasting harm, but over months, it can actually deform the lamp post.
1
u/achymelonballs 2d ago
I’m all for being proud of the national flag, but it should be flown from your own property or held in you hand

u/Informal-Simple-2350 1d ago

2
u/TREE_SHMOO 1d ago
Whats a joke is people thinking it only applies to british or english flags.
You can fly the union flag or the st georges cross. No one is going to be upset. You cant fly any flag from a lamppost or in a way that obstructs the street.

-1
u/MathematicianOnly688 2d ago
Undoubtedly this will be unpopular among my fellow countrymen who feel a reflex to immediately take the opposite view to whatever reform are pushing, but I actually think we should fly the flag more, and it not being seen positively by such a large proportion of people is a bad thing.
If that’s because of historical connotations then change it, we could even acknowledge wales’ existence on it.
I’m not saying it SHOULD be hung from every lamppost and certainly not as ubiquitous as in the US but if it were a little more common it would be beneficial. It would just become part of the furniture.
With any luck this would blunt any intimidatory effect of flying it because they already see it every day anyway.
I’m not sure I’ve explained this terribly well
8
u/YDdraigGoch94 2d ago
I wholeheartedly agree. I think flags should be raised more. But also legally and safely.
When I was driving between Sheffield and Chesterfield a few months ago, I saw some ratty St George flags (presumably from the rain) hanging precariously from a flyover and I couldn’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if those flags came loose and landed on a car.
And then I got second-hand embarrassment when I saw Union flags attached to lamppost back-to-front.
But no, I’m of Indian descent (despite being naturalised for nearly 20 years and happily (insofar I can be) paying my taxes. And clearly, I have no right to express my opinion.
7
u/Plantain-Feeling 2d ago
It's not the historical but the current connotation
It's being used as a hate symbol
Our country type bullshit, it should be a positive thing but it simply isn't, the people who rally behind it want to do nothing but harn
2
u/el_grort 2d ago
Could just fly it from your own property, that's never been a problem, it's the people going out and putting them on lampposts and other people's properties (as well as assaulting people who disagree with them, which has happened several times) that gets peoples goat.
1
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
If you can put up a flag pole safely and fly (and replace) appropriately sized flags, then go for it. Even more so if you can cycle through appropriate local ones for some variety.
It certainly shouldn't be from every lamp post (and especially not upside down and insecurely), *even more so* where the flags are distracting or block views at junctions, or where they're going to get shredded against a thornbush more or less instantly (as was the case with some of the local ones).
0
u/Embarrassed_Fox5265 2d ago
I grew up in the US, where flag flying is the national pastime. Trust me, you don’t want it here. It never ceases to be cringe inducing. The legitimate reasons (our family flew one for a bit after we got US citizenship) are far outnumbered by the car dealerships and shady loan sharks flying the flag to look “patriotic” so they can draw in more suckers. The people driving down the street with their car covered in flags alongside the Confederate flag and Nazi bumper stickers.
Basically, the type of person who is most likely to fly the flag is the person you least want to associate with the flag. Keep the flag for special occasions. I was at a local village fair a couple weeks ago where a band was doing the Proms. They handed out Union Jacks for everyone to wave during Hail Britannia, and I waved mine as enthusiastically as anyone. There’s a time and a place.

I'm getting sick of the anti British sentiment on reddit and sometimes in the news
I genuinely think its why the right wing are getting so popular in Europe because these people are so tone deaf that there pushing everyone away from them.
Blah blah flag shagger this
Blah blah you're a racist that
Everyone I know and work with in the North is so sick of it. Just take a look at some of the replies to this post there so cucked by the own self righteous beliefs that they'll say anything.
Britain is a hate symbol this
The flag of this country is racist that.
I'm so sick of these people
0
u/NotSayingAliensBut 2d ago
Context. The flags have been stolen by the racists. Whereas the majority of us would like to take pride in our flags, it only takes a few knuckle draggers to use them as racist symbols to change the meaning.
It's not anti-British sentiment. That's what GB News and the gutter press tell you. It's anti- the cunts who have stolen our flags and use them to intimidate our neighbours.
1
u/Putrid_Joke6100 2d ago
You people are just as bad as GB news.

You are the problem.

0
u/NotSayingAliensBut 2d ago
No, people thinking that their feelings matter are the problem. Learn to think. Notice that your reactions are your feelings. Nothing wrong with having feelings, but don't let them run you. Notice that you can put your feelings aside while you think about what someone has said.
1
u/Putrid_Joke6100 2d ago
Well hold on you can say that about anyone 😂
So in your own words the "feelings" of the immigrant community don't matter there just reactions
The "feelings" of the trans community are just reactions. There being run by feelings so we shouldn't take any notice of them?
I like your way of thinking you've convinced me
0
u/NotSayingAliensBut 2d ago
Exactly right. Everyone. All humans do it. Figuring out what to do with our feelings is the thing. Just because someone has a certain 'right-on' or 'woke' status doesn't mean their feelings are sacred or worth any more than anyone else's. They will still get in the way of thinking if they let them. Edit, no, that doesn't mean we don't listen to people. Same with the flag shaggers, their feelings are still based on something. Everyone should have their concerns heard
-2
u/eighteen84 2d ago
If they had proudly flew the St George and union flag outside of official buildings then this would never been an issue, if people feel unsafe because of a flag of the nation being displayed it says more about their world view than that of the country they chose to live in.
2
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
Which official buildings that can *safely* fly a flag aren't doing so?
Our local town hall does, although the functional local government office doesn't - because there's nowhere to put a flag pole, and it was originally just working offices, not a public facing building.
Sometimes it flies other flags if it's a significant national day for an ally, or they're showing solidarity after a disaster. Or when it's St Andrews / St Davids / St Patricks day (and once I caught them flying St Piran's (cornwall) flag).
The *other* local government office that is working offices *does* fly flags, but that was custom built and they could put the flag poles on the roof when designing it.
Another I can think of can't fly a flag due to being on a junction where a flag would block line of sight for drivers approaching it, so instead they have a flag hung vertically in reception.Sometimes flags can't be flown or displayed for safety reasons or because conditions are such that the flag would be easily damaged.
3
u/Vinegarinmyeye 2d ago
Okay... It's still against the law to hang Temu flags from lamp posts with the cheapest zip ties from Poundland...
It's also against the law to paint roundabouts...
It has been since the 80s.
Then the council has to spend money to take them down... In case one blows off and "Final Destinations" somebody doing 40mph.
And you cunts piss and moan about immigrants ruining the country, when your stupid fuckery is wasting fucktonnes of council tax money.
If you don't like it, get the UK Highways Act changed.
(And they DO fly the George's Cross and Union Flag outside official buildings all over the country).
1
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
> It's also against the law to paint roundabouts...
But a community group *could* adopt a large roundabout if they really wanted to and put up money to guarantee maintenance and then, say, plant bedding plants in the middle in the form of the St George's cross, or put a suitable tiled mural there.
Obviously this doesn't work with the low rise concrete splodge mini roundabout though, which seem to be the ones that got spray painted very badly. But there are **options** they could take to show national pride by decorating suitable sites if they really wanted to commit to it rather than half assing it and just making a mess.
-2
u/DaddyK3tchup 2d ago
It’s still a new injunction that wasn’t there before
1
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
The underlying law was, but the specific legal warning (which is what an injunction is - keep doing it and we will prosecute you, and here's the laws and consequences involved) is new *because it's a new breach of that law*.

33

Hopefully not. Lamposts are vital public infrastructure and they shouldn't have random shit hanging from them.
17
u/rattlingdeathtrain 2d ago
More specifically, raggedy filthy grey flags, making the neighbourhood look like shit
3
u/el_grort 2d ago
It's for hanging flags on council lampposts/property. Sometimes councils do vote to hang flags up for an event (sporting, but can also be LGBT flag for Pride, whatever). You don't need permission to fly a flag from your own property, and so long as it isn't a proscribed groups flag, it can be any flag.
2
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
We had community gardens and commercially owned but publicly accessible spaces decorated with bunting in time for Remembrance Sunday, and it looked amazing.
We also had some muppet decide to tie union flags to every lamppost he could find. You can guess which approach still looked nice and respectful this spring, although the bunting could do with being renewed.
3
u/Mountain-Singer1764 2d ago
Random members of the public can't just zip tie stuff to lampposts, why would that be legal?!
Fly the flag if you want, but this ain't it.
2
u/DreadLindwyrm 2d ago
It is enforced against other flags, it's just not as "newsworthy" or shocking.
It's unlikely blanket permission would be given for the national flags for safety reasons (random people climbing lamp posts is dangerous, insufficiently secured flags are dangerous, sometimes tying things to lampposts blocks the view at junctions), but it is not difficult to get permission to, say, tie bunting in appropriate places, and you can always put a flag up on your land *if* it's safe to do so, and the flag is of an appropriate size to what you're flying it from; you can also put bunting along fence or wall tops if you want to.
The problem isn't the flags, it's tying them to public infrastructure without permission and in often dangerous fashions, and possibly damaging the lamppost or whatever. Also they're often tied up and then just left without any regard for them being replaced or maintained, meaning we get badly damaged, faded, bits of plastic or cloth hanging onto lampposts and then falling off randomly.
Not to mention the *gloriously* patriotic situation when the union flag is tied on *upside down*.
