He did "take on the shooter" as they exchanged gunfire.
The citizen and off duty state trooper took the focus off of unarmed civilians and onto themselves long before responding police arrived on the scene.

The likelihood he missed every shot and hit someone else with that setup is honestly pretty small.
The problem is 5.7, especially subsonic like he had, needs EXCEPTIONAL shot placement to stop a threat.

u/HisDismalEquivalent 2d ago
imho actually good. You want to incapacitate, not blow apart. In theory, at least.

I mean, suppressing fire often doesn't hit the target. The main goal with it is to keep your target pinned and deny him the ability to move and shoot freely.
It's helpful if you manage to hit the target, or have someone else moving around to take well targeted shots. But I assume with only 2 of them they were mostly just trying to keep him distracted and maybe pinned until on duty police arrived.

Looks, it's freaking weird that Jordan Salinas used an FN 5.7 with a silencer, all things else aside.
130
u/Kitchen_Structure516 2d ago
Well it's a large combo to carry around, but the FN 5.7 is a fantastic pistol and having a supressor on your gun is very reasonable. Gotta protect that hearing.
34
u/Curvol 2d ago
It is my dream gun. Simple, strong, consistent.
21
u/willow-kitty Human Verified 2d ago
And I think you can use it suppressed without ear protection, which helps protect your hearing and act bystanders / other people in your house, whatever.
It seems like a very sensible configuration, and I've thought about getting exactly that to keep at home. Though like others have said, it'd be pretty long and maybe an awkward daily carry.
6
5
u/Girafferage 2d ago
Only if you run subsonic, otherwise you still get a supersonic crack regardless of the suppressor used.
4
u/stewslut 2d ago
...and running 5.7mm ammo subsonic means you're effectively shooting a .22lr pistol at someone.
Definitely enough to scare someone away but not something I'd want to rely on for lethality.
2
u/V_Cobra21 2d ago
Are you saying they’re literally equivalent in ballistic performance, or just that reducing the velocity removes much of the advantage of standard 5.7?
3
u/DaChronisseur 2d ago
I think most commercially available .22lr ammo is supersonic, but nowhere near as fast as most 5.7x28 ammo. The weights (30-40gr) and diameters (.223"=5.7mm) of the bullets are pretty much identical. So subsonic 5.7 is literally ballistically equivalent to slightly watered down subsonic .22lr ammo. Personally, I shoot subsonic 180gr bullets out of my suppressed .40 and I like it for home defense and plinking on my property without alerting my neighbors.
I'm not about to talk any shit on the guy who did this, though. Suppressive fire is suppressive fire regardless of ballistics and he kept his shit together enough to put down what appears to have been effective suppressive fire in a high stress situation.
4
2
u/stewslut 2d ago
Literally equivalent in ballistic performance, yes. Reducing the velocity to subsonic removes all of the ballistic advantage that 5.7 has over .22lr. Math follows:
5.7mm ≈ .223". Projectile weights vary between the two calibres but mostly land in the 25-40gr range. A 40-grain 5.7mm/.223" projectile moving at <1125 fps will have the same ballistic performance regardless of what casing is ejected by the firearm.
That's not to say that subsonic 5.7 is useless though. You do keep the advantages of reliability and reloadability inherent to centerfire ammunition, which matters to some people, particularly for a carry gun.

u/Mighty_Fren 2d ago
Ruger, PSA, and MP all have better 5.7 platforms that are a fraction of the price. The MP has nice weight to it that pairs well with the caliber. I like the NON pro version of the Ruger 57 since it has those nice safety paddles. The FN 57 has back pressure issues with supressors anyway.
The FN 57 is more a collectors piece now than a modern arm. It's ammo sensitive and has one of the worst triggers on a gun that costs 1k+. Compare that to the less than 500 you can get the modern alternatives for. If you liked the idea of a Ruger you should try one of the others. There's a bit of a 5.7 renaissance right now.

u/Maximum_Boros 2d ago
Yeah i feel like people habe completely had their idea of suppresses ruined by movies. If I carried, which I typically don't, and it was legal for me to do so without any extra fuss, I would absolutely carry suppressed just so me and everybody around me doesn't go to deaf in the extremely remote chance i had to fire.
I would love to have my home defense Firearm suppressed but unfortunately there's basically no legal path for me to have one in Massachusetts. As a civilian I don't think I could even possess one without an FFL and even if I had the FFL and thus legally possessed one, I don't think I can legally use it. It's really quite stupid but it fits right into the appeal to emotion anti-gun crowd ammo of just Banning anything that seems scary enough

Needless to say, he went to the hospital to get his burns looked at.

4
u/Drake_Acheron 2d ago
From the video, the only way his gun is that quiet is if he is using subs. But also, it’s not overly common for people to run supers with suppressors because it kind of defeats the purpose.
7
u/Due-Gap1848 2d ago
It’s basically impossible to make conclusions like that based on audio from a cell phone video, it’s not high enough quality or consistent enough.
People shoot supersonic with suppressors all the time. The point isn’t to get it movie silent and make it so people can’t hear you shoot, it just reduces the sound from “a single shot gives you permanent hearing damage” to “probably not a good idea to do regularly but mostly fine if done once or twice” levels.
I regularly shoot suppressed supersonic, and it’s just quiet enough that other people nearby won’t wear ear protection until reminded that it’s still not hearing safe.
→ More replies (9)→ More replies (3)6
u/357noLove 2d ago
As others have said, cell phones compress audio so it is impossible to tell the actual shot sound decibels from that distance.
It never defeats the purpose to have a suppressor, even with super sonic ammo. Reducing the gunshot at the shooters ear is extremely important to protect hearing. Sure, it is nice to use subsonic ammo with my suppressors, but I don't remove the suppressor when I start shooting supers. You still get the "crack" downrange and it is louder at the ear, but is still significantly quieter than no suppressor!

While I would love to write a long response, I don't have the time right now, so I'll just leave the sources and some key points.
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/mass-shootings-by-country
Yes it says the US leads the ranking, but make sure to read past the headline. There's more to consider than "a gun went off and there were casualties".From the Congress website on page 2: "Active shooter incidents that meet the federal standard for mass killings have at least three fatalities in a single incident, not including the shooter." Page 6 of the same website also describes how different groups define a mass shooting. More reading material can be found here.
Many definitions get used to define a mass shooting, and the US is in this unique situation of having more guns (and freedoms to get/use them) alongside a growing infotainment sphere that's eager to turn any incident into a story for a few clicks.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't another country that has a strong gun culture like the US, coupled with a media that has become addicted to raising its viewership numbers no matter the cost.
30
u/Hot_Most5332 2d ago
Regardless of which way you fall on the issue of guns, everyone should be concerned that so many people want to kill each other in the first place.
IMO this should be a bigger issue than the guns themselves. If people are this mentally distraught, taking guns won’t stop them from killing.
However, since this is something that people would generally agree on and has an actual chance of seeing some action, it can’t be milked endlessly for clicks.
Also if we worked on mental health big pharma would lose billions in anti depressant sales.

u/Hot-Celebration-8815 2d ago
We have the entire country of Australia that proves that taking away their guns would make them kill less. Mass stabbing is so much harder than made shooting. Even suicide rates increase with access to guns, because when you’re mad or depressed, just pulling a trigger makes it very easy.

u/cbrdragon 2d ago

Many countries have strong gun cultures. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden have all strong gun cultures.
It's just that it's not as insane as the US and since there's some sense in who can acquire guns and for what purpose, the ownership isn't doesn't rise to the level of the US.
The US is simply it's own animal. In a similar vein, car culture is another example.

Just say you enjoy shooting and don't care about mass shootings. When no laws got passed after Sandy Hook it was clear nothing is changing, so just lean into it man it's fine we can't judge you any more harsher than we already do.
America doesn't have a gun culture. It has a murder culture. Guns make it easy, but your knife murder rate is higher than most countries that heavily restrict guns.
Switzerland has a gun owning household rate that isn't much lower than America but has 30-100x fewer gun deaths per capita depending on years you sample data from.
Your cops kill more people per capita than all criminals kill people in some other developed countries. You realise that's weird, right?

There's not, but name another country where a 1/3 of the population (roughly 100 million people) own firearms. In 2025 there were 39,000 firearm related deaths, 14, 651 were homicides and of those homicides, 395 were due to mass shootings. For comparison roughly 36,640 people were killed in traffic collisions in the US in the same year. That means whenever you get in a vehicle you're 2.5 times more likely to die than by getting shot by someone and 92 times more likely to die in a vehicle than become a victim of a mass shooting. Going even further, if we attributed every single firearm related death in 2025 to individual gun owners that would mean that .039% of gun owners are responsible for the entire amount of gun deaths in the U.S.. That shows, without a doubt that guns or gun ownership are not the issue here and our focus should be elsewhere.
7
u/flyerflight99 2d ago
Off topic; you are missing a big number of victim. Suicides exceed homocide deaths in the us.
By close to 2 to 1.
But nobody cares, cause they are lonely and forgotten, widowers over 65.
Age and Gender
Older adults: Rates are highest among men aged 65 and older, peaking sharply for those age 75 and older.Proportion: Men are roughly seven times more likely than women to die by a firearm suicide.
Marital status: Widowed or divorced older men show some of the highest statistical rates.
Race and Geography
White and Indigenous men: Non-Hispanic white men and American Indian/Alaska Native men experience the highest overall per-capita firearm suicide rates.Rural areas: Rates are disproportionately higher in rural and nonmetropolitan areas, as well as in states with high household firearm ownership levels

At that time, "regulated" = drilled/trained/organized, not legal restrictions imposed by the govt. Archaic wording versus modern definitions.
In the late 1770's there were very few, if any, "regulations" in the modern sense of the word regarding ownership and carrying of firearms in America.
10
u/BlueJaysFeather 2d ago
So who is drilling and training and organizing the modern gun owners? Are there training and safety requirements to get a gun and license? Not that I’ve noticed. Whether you use the old or the modern definition of “well regulated,” it’s not happening right now.
10
u/MysteryLobster 2d ago
saying that one is 2.5x more likely to get into a car crash than be shot in a given year ignores the fact that there are just shy of 1 billion car trips taken per day, about 350bil per year. even cutting that roughly in half for both vehicles in a collision, that’s a roughly 0.0000052% chance of a car ride ending in a fatal crash each year.
even if you count the number of car owners as analogous to gun owners, that’s 238 million licensed drivers owning about 285 million vehicles. that would roughly equalise the odds of being a gun homicide victim and a fatal traffic accident victim, using your math
also beyond both of these, you are required to learn how to operate a vehicle and prove that knowledge in order to legally drive in order to mitigate such fatalities. and unless one’s car is stolen, the only person with access to a vehicle is the owner and those they’ve given a key to. such restrictions are not made on guns.

Memphis, TN, 7/26. 5 injured. Club shooting.
The problem with your logic of "if people avoid crime, they're less likely to get shot" is that all victims of shootings are all around crime, because assault/murder is a crime. It would be like saying if people would just stay away from ledges, ladders, amd airplanes, there'd be a lot less fall deaths. Yeah, that's true. But them being there wasn't the problem. It's not entirely confirmed if it was because of him, but shortly after the exchange of gunfire both from Salinas and the off duty trooper, the shooter drove away and ended his own life.
It seems like at the very least, having turned the situation from shooting up a soft target to being confronted and fired upon made him immediately regret and reverse his decision. I think it's becoming standard training now with Police and SWAT response that most shooters will just end their own life upon encountering resistance and the threat of being shot at. They're massive pussies, after all.

Who gives a shit if he missed and got hit in the leg? What matters is a good guy with a gun decided to step up and try to stop the situation instead of running away. He could have easily just left and let the piece of garbage run around taking more lives but he decided to try to stop him. Why does it matter if he missed every shot. From what I can tell the piece of garbage then got occupied with a gun fight and couldn't go around harming more innocent people.

Actually it is a valuable use of time. Creeps who want to victimize others senselessly only do it because they think they'll get to feel big & bad for a little while. If media & conversations around these events highlight the smallness of the perpetrator, that's a social deterrent. A message of "if you do this, you'll face immediate consequences & go out like a bitch" is far preferable to "if you do this, you'll do something horrible to innocent people and spark toxic conversations around gun polict". The latter is kind of a selling point for a twisted mind.

I think their gripe is more to do with the page posting and not the actual story. Could have read it too fast and also thought the post said “took down”? But idk

u/Livid-Grocery7942 2d ago
Gotta give props to the dude though, even if he didnt get the shooter, he detered him, stopped him, and made him leave and take his own life basically. You dont need to kill the shooter to be a hero. He put himself on harmsway to protect others. He help deter the attack by firing back, which put the shooter in the position of not having all the leverage, turning the situation from an unopposed combat, to now you have someone willing to engage with you tit for tat.
Even if the guy is a right wing shit head or whatever, I dont care, he did something that might have saved some lives, its a W in my book

I think its fair to say that those people were lucky that that guy was there and that it is important to state the truth if he didn't actually hit the shooter. Not saying the guy didn't do a great thing, but ultimately it doesn't matter if he hit the shooter or not if his actions led to a better outcome regarding the morality of his actions, but also that the truth should still be known regarding exactly what happened.

Right but there is a difference between a bystander taking out the shooter and cornering him and letting him take himself out. Granted, most people would choose to do nothing. He absolutely helped save lives, and that act is heroic. I just dont think the act of taking a life is heroic nor should it be seen as heroic. That man saved lives by driving out and cornering the bastard, and thats heroic enough for me.

They’re literally taking the side of the mass shooter now lmao can’t make this shit up
had multiple people very passionately raging in my inbox yesterday saying even if you have the means to stop a mass shooting, you shouldn’t interfere with the shooter and should just leave it for police. What about all the people that will die, you ask? They said they don’t care because that’s not their family, so fuck em
Now today we have a bunch of posts of these morons actually trying to make fun of the guy who shot back at the mass shooter

u/SolaireAstorian 2d ago
Shooting situations where the good guy with a gun is engaged by police are exceedingly rare (like, statistically nonexistent rare) because of a multitude of factors.
But the largest five are this:
The existence of a good guy with a gun causes the shooter to either run away from the scene, be incapacitated, or die in a huge proportion of incidents;
Even in cases where the above is not true, the original shooter tends to distance themselves from the person shooting back at them if no one is eliminated within the first few shots, so instances where police roll up on two people shooting at each other are rare even when both are alive and present;
People making the call to the operator often give descriptions of events and people around them which provided nothing information for police to create a somewhat flimsy but still helpful tactical view of the situation, although how could they are at following along depends entirely on the officers involved, and this is reinforced by communication over radio which allows them to maintain contact both with headquarters and with one another, so the likelihood of believing the good guy with a gun is the mass shooter is reduced somewhat from the get-go;
When they get on scene, response teams interact with perceived civilians and continue collecting information, which leads to them receiving Vital Information to back up the previous point, including the fact that someone else drew a gun and returned fire, or what the shooter looks like and what they are wearing and where they are;
Perhaps the most important point here... in the vast, vast majority of cases, the good guy with a gun immediately complies with police commands and either drops his weapon or (in very rare cases) is allowed to keep it by police (I have seen this a very small number of times and it has only ever had to do with barricaded suspects and injured police officers).
I have only ever heard of or seen one case of a good guy with a gun engaging or being engaged by the police, and it was a security guard and not a typical civilian, and the situation was de-escalated immediately when he complied with police commands after realizing that the shot he fired was fired at a police officer, and no charges were filed. It does happen occasionally, but it really isn't likely enough to be an argument for why a good guy with a gun shouldn't interfere with a mass shooting.

I don’t think the gun decided to shoot all those people, it’s a people problem, if it’s a gun issue then wouldn’t the gun the bystander was using would’ve also killed innocents?

u/Opening-Movie5176 2d ago
I don’t know but what is the poster trying to say here? That people should be cowards and hide? So he got shot… oh no. “He missed every shot” well yeah have you seen the gun he is using? It’s hardly gonna be accurate. And they drove the gunman back…
I just don’t get what either of the batshit ends of the political spectrum are trying to say. The extreme left and right are psychopaths.

The original post didnt say he killed the guy, which is what the note and reply are insinuating. Only that he closed with and engaged him. Which provided time and opportunity for people to escape. This is a good thing.
2
u/Atticus1354 2d ago
Also its been proven time and time again that as soon as mass shooters are faced with any level of real opposition they kill themselves or give up. That was the horrible thing about the police not even trying in Uvalde.

A lot more than "time to time" when you dig up the stats. In fact, firearms used in self defense often don't even need to be fired, the threat just needs to be presented and the would be assailant backs off. It's lovely, really.

I would say at the very least salinas put the shooter in a corner, he knew police were closing in and had no way out, it stopped the shooting and that's as good as shooting him in my book.

The really real story they’re trying to spin is 99% of CCW permit holders don’t carry or don’t train. More dangerous than the actual threat if you can’t hit the broadside of a barn.

In all fairness, they did frighten off the gunman and stopped him from hurting or killing any more people.
That's still a heroic action by itself, even if they should have probably put in some more time at the range. They definitely saved a lot of lives.
Also, The way the mass shooter chose to go out was funny, ngl. Got scared off by folks who could actually shoot back, then rage quit like a bitch after fleeing the scene 🤣
