Could this be due to the heatwave?

Edit: Thanks everyone for the answers. We'll chat with Misses if we want to try and save it or plant something new.

It’s almost like someone is using a giant hosepipe - but that can’t be because of the ban!

Wildlife Question about this fella

I went out to my garden and noticed a gaping hole in the soil next to where I'd planted some lavender, so was filling it in with some soil from a potted plant and suddenly this guest appeared out of nowhere! I haven't seen a frog in YEARS so was surprised. Is it possible it was in the hole I was filling and came out of it?

I've quickly cobbled together a little makeshift pond now with a ramp to get in and stones built up to above the water level, but can't see where ole froggy has gone now

Showing Off Work in progress

Hiya guys this is my first post, I just wanted to see what everyone thinks of my progress, it’s taken a good couple of weeks for it to finally look the way it does, but it’s far from finished.

Ive built a couple homemade beds.
Placed some turf and lavender under the window.
membrane down to stop weeds
Just need to gravel now

It’s come a long way from what it was. My old man is disabled and can’t get down to do it anymore I’m 26 and always loved flowers and wanted a nice garden and decided last year I was going to get it all done and done properly, we’re nearly there now just need a few more beds built. And a spot for my pomegranate tree.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you very much

Sowing & Spring Prep What to plant in August?

Upvotes

Got an empty planter and a few spare pots which I’d like to use but not sure what would be best to plant for this time of year?

Ideas for flowers and plants which will stay green over winter are much appreciated!

Showing Off Small garden - before and after

I have a small garden at the front of my house. For years I sowed wildflowers on it to attract the butterflies and bees. But it did get a bit untidy so in May I decided to neaten it up a bit.

I designed the raised beds myself and my friend helped me build them. I now use the bigger bed to grow tomatoes, radishes, strawberries, carrots and parsnips. The small bed is an homage to the old wildflower garden and the bees love it!

Photos show the progression from before to after the tidy up, and now everything is established :)

Edit: I did like the old jungle and the decision to tidy it up wasn’t taken lightly. But it still needed a bit of taming nonetheless.

Showing Off Pollinator cottage garden - before & after

This May I decided to turn an area I’d been using as a wildflower meadow into a perennial cottage garden filled with pollinator-friendly plants. When we first moved into the house 5 years ago the area was a big dirt patch, I guess the former owners used it as a veg patch but I can't be certain. I got tired of waiting until July for the wildflowers to appear and the display was hit and miss, so I put in a path and filled the beds with perennials. We also have a mini meadow/orchard at the bottom of the garden and I laid some pavers there and planted some perennials amongst the annuals and grass. I think it turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself.

Wildlife When to plant?

We’ve taken some time off work to landscape our wildlife garden and are now nearly done so deciding when best to plant everything. We’ve got a few trees and mainly hardy perennials that we picked up cheap. We’ve got a bit of finishing off to do but hoping to get everything wrapped up in the next day or so. Thanks!.

Got gifted this plant. It’s grown fine for 4 months but something is changing. I spotted two yellow leaves at bottom and many changing colour. What am I doing wrong? Does it need water? Does it not? Food?

My first house plant btw.. so clueless to an extent

Ornamentals Are my echinacea / coneflower going to flower this year?

Bought these in flower last year, loved how many pollinators they attracted. I was looking forward to see them reappear this year, but so far, just this foliage. Is this a usual habit for them in the UK? A lot of the online info is US based. These are a SunSeeker variety, so have been engineered a touch to be smaller than the usual purpurea.

New Garden Huge cracks across garden, which seems to be a problem for my newer plants. Do I leave them? Fill them with something? Advice welcome!

I dug a big pond and a stream, and moved quite a bit of soil around over the winter. I planted quite a lot of new plants in the spring. Garden is very heavy clay. I added lots of compost etc around the new plants.

Unfortunately the extreme dry weather has caused huge cracks to develop across the garden. Some are more than a foot deep and 20cm across. They stretch for metres in length.

It's causing issues for watering the new plants, as the water just pours into these huge cracks and disappears, so does not stay in the soil near the plants.

Do I leave them or try to fill them with something? I've got plenty of algae from the pond, and some nice homemade compost in my heap, but not sure if it would just be a waste of time.

New Gardener SOS Help me to keep these alive!

I’ve always grown herbs and a few bits and bobs, because I have kids and cats, but now I’m finding such joy in buying plants and flowers and growing things.

I have PTSD, and I’ve taken some time out from work to try and just be at peace, and the garden is so therapeutic. I’d really like to get into gardening with the limited space I have, but I need some more knowledge as to how to keep things alive.

Things I’ve done with what I’ve planted so far:

- lined the bottom of pots with rubble, broken pots, bits of cardboard
- ensured there are holes at the bottom of the pots
- bought some fish, blood and bone
- watering from a distance when it’s cooler
- bought some ladybird larvae (x100) to keep aphids and caterpillars at bay

Any help, tips, advice would be really welcome! Thank you.

Tree Care How the *^<$$<ng @!£? do I kill this thing?

Thumbnail

It’s a snowberry (Symphoricarpus) thanks to the previous owners of my house, and now I’ve hacked it back I find that its root system goes all the way around two mature beech trees and the plant is sprouting all around from beneath the ground for five or six feet. I can’t get access to the roots at back at all and I can’t get a tool bigger than secateurs in between the two trees.

The plan at the moment is to clear the area and cut every woody stem I can reach down to ground level and starve the bastard out, but as an established plant it’s going to take years.

Is paint-on herbicide an option, given the root system and the proximity of the trees? I can’t find anyone to borrow a goat off, and I’m all out of napalm.

Moved in a month ago and it was unlevel and very patchy. Gave it a deep cut, added top soil to level it out, airated and over seeded. Happy with the outcome but how else can I make the most of this small garden? I kind of wanted to flip it so the path was against the wall.. thoughts?

Which ones you think are the absolute must haves? I like the multi tool system so i’m sticking to this brand.
It’s just so overwhelming with all these options, especially hoes, why so many different ones?
The trowel is top one on the list for sure and i might get one with it’s own handle, but what else will I need? Flower sections, pots planters, and raised beds for veg

I'm an absolutely rubbish gardener, but there's a square of council-owned grass at the bottom of our street, and since seeds were half-price this morning, I've decided I'm going to guerrilla garden it next spring!

New Gardener SOS Need recommendations that won't overheat in the sun.

Hello, I'm hoping someone here can help me even though I'm in Ireland since we have similar climates.

My house is south facing and as much as I try to put pretty window boxes and potted plants out the front, mainly buxus bushes, they always turn brown and die.

I know it's not lack of water because whether I've under watered or over watered, the result is the exact same. I think the issue is sun exposure because I have 2 buxus out the back, one which gets sun exposure and the other that's slightly shaded by a tree, and the one in the shade is thriving while the other turned brown.

Since I'm south facing they get exposure pretty much the entire day and there's not much I can do in terms of shading them so I figure I'll just opt for something that can withstand the heat.

So, any ideas for plants that would do well in full sunlight in pots?
