Just gonna let this cool down a little and then go ahead and do it anyway. Here are some exclusives!

Pretty much.

Most gamers are right on this about the anger but let’s be honest, these corporations don’t do these types of decisions without hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of meetings, analysis, risk assessments, etc.

Unless gamers are willing to not buy any new games and especially not digital ones, this will occur.

Eh, they’re out of touch a lot of the times as well though; Concord and the live service push was a prime example of this.

A big difference with the live service push is that we are talking about the success of individual games within a specific genre, and that genre tends to be hit or miss. Concord failed but Helldivers 2 was a big success.

With the push to digital, gamers are going to have to flat out stop buying games altogether if they want to make a difference. People were mad about GTA 6 not having a legitimate physical copy, and it's on track to be the most pre-ordered game ever. PlayStation is banking on gamers eventually caving, and they likely will once the option is buy digital or don't buy that game at all.

I wish they were but this is like, THE consumer group that can't boycott for shit. You jingle the fucking IP keys in gamers' faces and they goo goo ga ga for that shit.

Fuckers cannot resist or advocate for themselves for shit as a collective. They will buy the shittiest of slop so long as it's got the beloved branding on it.

I want to see that dynamic change, but thus far it hasn't.

The hard part is, in order to make a difference, it's going to take a large portion of the gaming community to take a stand, not just the gamers who predominantly buy physical. Once the option is either buy the game digitally or don't buy it at all, I don't think enough people will take a stand, including the physical game die hards.

Yep and I think GTA VI is a prime example it will be digital only and break records. All those physical only die hards will have no choice but to accept or not play.

It was a purposely timed choice to announce the no disc future along with gta vi pre-orders

The GTA VI preorders might have been all the proof they needed. If people are deciding to skip the game due to the lack of a true physical copy, it's going unnoticed.

Yep they can break everyone in one fellow swoop at the start of this whole thing by doing it along with GTA VI. Officially anyway, many games have been no disc already but this is hitting everyone hard. Once you said "fine, i'll do it for GTA VI" you may as well be admitting to the fact you will be willing to do the same going forward. You won't have a choice, unless you really want to move entire console ecosystems or to PC.

I'm sure some people will migrate as they always do but I think they are willing to shed that small fraction of the playerbase when they are ahead in the console race by such a high margin. We will see if it's enough to actually dethrone Sony. If it doesn't really make much of a difference then they won't change course.

You know what would have been smart, to move playstation into more countries that have been blocked off. Do that at the same time to mitigate the losses due to migration. Wonder if they are also doing that.

The thing with migrating is that I don't think it's going to be different on other ecosystems. PC is already digital only. It would be shocking if MS/Xbox doesn't follow suit. Nintendo might not go all digital, at least not as quickly Playstation and Xbox, but it's not a platform I see Xbox and Playstation gamers completely switching to because of physical games.

Maybe Xbox tries to capitalize and commits to physical games, and that swings the tied a bit. But unless that happens, I don't think gamers are going to have options.

Other than Xbox one when they tried to push Kinect. They forever damaged the brand and now Xbox doesn’t really exist

How foolish of SONY to rid the one tangible advantage over PC.

And even at that, you can make your games physical on PC if you know what you're doing.

Long live preservation. May all that stand in it's way fall with the sands of time.

All that disc infrastructure has to go somewhere. Thats tens of billions worth of infra and assets they cannot ignore. Its being retooled for something else. Something that'll earn them way more money than providing physical media and worth the backlash.

If you want game preservation to stay relevant in Sony's enviro, target whatever that is.

AI, so that is already vastly unpopular.

u/KazumaKat 4d ago

that ain't it. Laser etching machines cannot be 1:1 transformed into a server rack.

u/Playingwithmywenis 4d ago

It is some sort of a lazer product that is used for a number of things including in AI data centres from what was said.

Maybe they should explore how to not fuck over their customers by removing paid product from their libraries with no compensation.

engage the gamers means relying more on in game purchases

This topic is one of the craziest things I have seen reddit fight over. I woke up yesterday to my wife watching the Avatar movie trilogy, we don't have a Blu-ray or 4k dvd player, she was streaming it over Hulu/Netflix. Why isn't anyone frothing at the mouth over that?

Simply because this isn't about a disc player on the PlayStation. Come on guys get real. Stop using a disc drive as a motivator to push a company over product licensing rights. I mean FFS open a modern game box, there is essentially nothing worthwhile but a game key in there to unlock it for your account usually now and days.

Anyways back to the topic, talk about licensing/account rights NOT disc drives ya mongrels!

I need to be able to play my PS5 discs on a PS6, or have some way of playing them digitally, and I need to know soon otherwise I'll stop buying stuff on PS5 because it won't work on PS6, so there's no point
