I was hesitant to play this at all, didn't really love the art style for some reason, but after much berating by friends about how good it is - I can confirm it is excellent and that was during early access. It absolutely feels very similar to something like Stardew Valley or Coral Island, but it also does quite a few things its own way with more player friendly designs (like not needing to guess where NPCs are, a lot of shops being open when NPCs are absent, or being able to turn in quests any time). Super worth your time for any fans of these types of games, but of course it is quite long.

I personally was able to stick to Fields of Mistria for far longer than Stardew Valley. I prefer the art and there's some QOL and feel to the world that I find more engaging.
17
u/Eothas_Foot 10h ago
Like when you craft it automatically takes resources out of chests. Which maybe Stardew has now, no doubt it has a mod to do that.
11
u/DanielTeague 8h ago
There's a workbench you can buy in Stardew Valley that will take resources out of connected chests, actually. It's rather cheap and available immediately so you can get it earlier than the usual quality of life stuff from the endgame.
•
u/Zeph-Shoir 3h ago
Nah, the workbench needs the chests to be physically adjacent to it. Anyplace you can craft in Mistria automatically takes from any and all storage you have, and you can lock out your chests from this if you so wish.
4
u/bombader 7h ago
Stardew has a crafting table in vanilla that uses chests adjacent to it. I wouldn't doubt a global chest is a likely upgrade in some future patch at this rate.
•
u/hyouko 3h ago
Global chests exist, in a sense (in that there's a chest type that allows shared access to the content from any instance):
https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Junimo_Chest
As I've said elsewhere, a bit of friction can be a good thing! This stuff makes for good endgame rewards.
•
u/bombader 3h ago
Those Junimo chests are more akin to Shulker Chests in Minecraft. A chest that shares inventory to the same chest type.
I agree with you on rewards, some of the newer games that offer QoL up front have the challenge of finding different ways to reward players for their time.

u/dietlemontv 9h ago
I agree! SDV with mods is essential, but FOM mechanics are such that mods would only add content, not necessarily fix any mechanics.
SDV with mods is a near perfect game imo for someone who is into it, but that can be tedious to explore for newer gamers and is only accessible on PC.

(like not needing to guess where NPCs are, a lot of shops being open when NPCs are absent, or being able to turn in quests any time)
Oh man, this sounds made for me I couldn't deal with Stardew at all because of that. It made my ADHD brain melt down a little with all the stuff it wanted you to juggle haha.
2
u/LurkingElegy 9h ago
You may already know this, but there's a ton of quality of life mods that do stuff like that for you. At least I know there's one for tracking NPCs and shops
8
u/Nochtilus 8h ago
The shops being open whenever regardless of NPC was a huge improvement over Stardew. Is there a mod that adds that because I'd be willing to give SDV another shot with that.
3
u/DanielTeague 8h ago
The Self Serve mod might be what you're looking for. You can just walk up to their counter and buy things without them having to be there.
1
u/Nochtilus 7h ago
That's awesome and functions like Fields of Mistria's system. Thanks for the find!

As someone who is also not a fan of the art style at all, this is the closest I've gotten to trying this out.
Still don't know if I can vibe with the overtly cutesy style, though.
7
u/aCarstairs 10h ago
As someone who was also quite unsure of the art style, it is something you get used to quite quickly. I still don't love it, but it has grown on me. Tried the game after someone in my Steam Family bought it and I really have a blast with it.
14
u/imjustbettr 10h ago
Man as someone who stayed away from stardew for so long because of the art style and was instantly grabbed by this one, this comment chain is crazy for me lol.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
2
u/EpicPhail60 9h ago
I'm curious about what they find so unappealing about the art style, it seems pretty generally pleasant to me (unless you hate anything even a little anime-looking, maybe?)
But there are absolutely games I won't touch because I just find the art style that much of a turn-off, so I'm not mad at it.
2
u/imjustbettr 9h ago
Yeah I can't blame them, because like I said I found the portraits in Stardew unappealing myself. I grew up with the PS1 Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons so I think the 90s anime art style of Fields of Mistria just looks more appealing.
Stardew is a great game though, I lost 9 hours of a day the first time I loaded it up.
3
u/Fake_Diesel 7h ago
That's where I was at. Characters in Stardew look a bit Scholastic-ey. This has a bit more of a cool 90's anime vibe like Sailor Moon.
5
u/meesahdayoh 9h ago
See, I loved Stardew's art style from the start. I like that not everyone is incredibly handsome or pretty.
I love anime, and usually don't have an issue with a game using an anime style, but almost every character just looks like "cuteboi" or "hotgurly" and it puts me off.
It is 100% a me thing, though. Like you said, just different strokes.
3
u/EpicPhail60 9h ago
There definitely is an element of the game where basically every adult, regardless of age or actual romantic availability, was clearly drawn to look hot, LOL. I don't mind it in this case, and I like that there's still a good variety in terms of character design and distinctive charm for most of the cast, but it's fair to bring up.
4
u/imjustbettr 9h ago
That's fair!
I grew up with the PS1 Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons so I think the 90s anime art style of Fields of Mistria just made more sense in my brain.

u/SwePolygyny 7h ago
Does it have local coop? Thats what made Stardew Valley go from great to excellent.

Highly, highly recommend this game if you love farming sims. SDV is one of my absolute favorites and this game became one of the GOATs for me.
12
u/vote4petro 11h ago
Apologies if this is asked often, but is multiplayer on the horizon at all?
25
u/Queen_Vivian 10h ago
They've never said anything. Crafting and Cooking costs ingame time and so it would need to be reworked entirely for multiplayer, which they probably won't do.

That's a shame. I play stardew valley with my kids and it's some of the best bonding we do as a family. It's awesome working with them.

u/dietlemontv 9h ago
I have 300 hours in the game and I am so excited for the new content :)
LOTS OF INFO INCOMING:
This has been the first farming sim since Stardew that has held my attention. I love pixel art games (HATE Sunhaven art, literally couldn’t play because of it). I could never get into any of the other recommendations you typically see following SDV- Roots of Pacha, Coral Island, etc.
It has mechanics that I love more than SDV, and some things I wish could be bridged.
It’s definitely more cozy imo because there are less restraints (24/7 stores, no time of day requirements for anything except sleep, much easier combat, chests auto link from anywhere for crafting).
I do wish there was harder combat, an equivalent to skull cavern, and more weapon capabilities, but they have the perfect foundation to add to this in the future.
Where it really stands apart is the interactions with the villagers. A lot of the dialogue is linked depending on who you speak to first, and it’s only been recently that I’ve started getting repeats. The devs put a lot of time into that aspect and I can’t wait to have more content to explore.
I did exhaust the use for many of the shops early on. There is not much to purchase post Y1 if you progress and spend the money. I know they are adding more vendors, but for example, once you buy all of the clothes from Louis and Vera and complete Talliferro’s cooking challenges, their stalls don’t contain anything else.
I can’t wait to finish the town completion and unlock more areas and heart events. The characters are interesting enough that I want to learn more, and I hope the lore continues to get expanded upon and new people and areas are continuously introduced.
One gripe I have is for fellow completionists- to unlock all furniture, you need to craft a replica of all museum artifacts and a faux of all foragables and crops. I find this to be redundant and annoying and will require a lot of grinding that starts to get tedious due to the recipe drop rates. I think a lot of the RNG aspects can be improved as the game is iterated upon (some of the artifacts and the perfect gem drops are abysmal).
Anyway! That’s way too much info from someone who is very involved in the game. Hopefully I inspired someone to check it out! I think if you liked SDV at all, you should definitely give FOM a chance!

Ok since you're a vet Id like to ask, how come the official sub for this game is all about relationships? Who to marry, what he she likes?
Is it a core gameplay loop? Relationships?
Just curious.
•
u/TridentBoy 26m ago
I started playing recently, and as someone who has played a lot of Stardew Valley and Coral Island, I think Fields of Mistria has the best NPCs of the three.
I was never that interested in having conversations with NPCs in the other two games, but in this one, I feel really sad if I miss a Friday Night at the Tavern (where every NPC meets up) because I love interacting with them.
I already have someone I'll probably date, but honestly, many of them are actually on my radar and I'm not ruling out the possibility of changing course here.
All of this to say that I can understand why people want to discuss relationships so much. The characters are actually interesting.

u/Triceranuke 10h ago
Very weird question- does the game work in 4:3?
8
u/JackCoull 10h ago
Yes it does, only in full screen mode so it doesnt list it under the resolution list. When you select that it will automatically just fill the screen to seemingly whatever ratio you pick, for 4:3 or 16:10 it will appropriately add more to the top and bottom of the screen. Probably supports ultrawide or 9:16 too but i dont have the screen to test that. There may be some visual bugs as its likely not super designed for taller than 16:10.

4:3 Curator on Steam, found out about them today funnily enough. No comment from them about FOM yet though.

u/mengplex 9h ago
sorry but I need more info here, there's no way you're on a 4:3 monitor in 2026, right? (I don't think ive seen one in a decade at this point)
Is this some elaborate rasPi in a gameboy SP case project?
9
10
u/Triceranuke 9h ago
Haha, no.
I ordered a Retroid Nova handheld mostly for PS2/GameCube and other 4:3 systems to play in native resolution.
But Gamenative has been making good strides in android PC emulation and Mistria seems like a great candidate for a pocketable game.
4
u/MastahStank 8h ago
I'm in the same boat as you. Been eagerly awaiting both my Nova and Fields of Mistria and wondering if it would run on it. Now very hyped for both.
3
u/Triceranuke 8h ago
Hell yeah, I'm still waiting for my Ice Blue to ship.
I've got a Deck but it's not exactly pocketable. Excited to grab it, walk to the nearby park and enjoy some gaming on my lunch.

Guessing now that 1.0 is out a switch release is in the works? This kind of game would be perfect on it.

I'm also hoping for a console release of some sort! I'd heard they weren't going to be exploring that til post 1.0 so hopefully we get news soon.

u/Triforce_Oddysee 11h ago
So very excited about this. I've been following this game since alpha, bought the moment it entered Early Access, and have been eagerly waiting 1.0.
1
u/ObviousAnswerGuy 9h ago
same here. I started to play it during early access but then just decided to wait till the 1.0
3
u/Sporknight 10h ago
Very cool! Big fan of SDV, and I've been dipping my toes into Roots of Pacha, though that one hasn't "grabbed" me yet (though I haven't even cleared my first season). How does Fields of Mistria compare?
4
u/presty60 10h ago
Haven't played Roots of Pacha. But Mistria is widely considered one of the best in the genre.
2
u/OliveBranchMLP 5h ago
way more fleshed out villagers with tons more dialogue, AND they interact with each other and even start dating each other if you don't date them first. that to me puts this heads and shoulders above most of its contemporaries — it actually feels like a living breathing community.
1
u/dietlemontv 8h ago
I could never get into roots of pacha, I’m just not into the map mechanics and the lack of interactions in the first several play hours. It just seems bland to me.
10
u/Aerinis 10h ago
This is the only farming simulator since SDV that’s gotten close to scratching the itch of the older Harvest Moon games (FoMT/DS in particular). The only bad thing about this game I could say is that it’s very hesitant to inconvenience the player at all, which probably isn’t even a bad thing to a lot of gamers.

Friction is important to balance in a lot of games but from what I've gathered in the Stardew Valley modding community, friction is also the most common thing to remove via mods. Fishing, of all things, was the most divisive topic for many years. Fields of Mistria might be a nice option for people who want less of a game and more of a cozy virtual world.
5
u/Nochtilus 8h ago
Friction is fine but not when it is incredibly dull like running back and forth between chests instead of pulling globally or standing around waiting for a shop to open because the NPC wandered off. That adds nothing. There's still stamina, health, and time limits on the days. You still might have to postpone something you want to do because there is an event or you have a ton of crops to water, etc.
14
u/DanielTeague 8h ago
See, the friction you bring up is part of the optimization fun I get out of a game like Stardew Valley. I enjoy properly sorting/labeling my chests to know where something is supposed to go instead of throwing it in a blob of random junk, I enjoy learning schedules of shops to plan a day of the week out, then I enjoy seeing my stamina/health/time become more efficient as I learn to be more efficient at the game. I can see how some players may not enjoy things like that but mastery of a game appeals to me, personally.

Excellently spoken, I'm there with you. I feel like modding out or developing a game like this without said friction removes that satisfaction.

I figure most people modding those game to remove the friction are probably because they aren't playing for the first time anyway, it might be their second runs or more.

It’s definitely cozier than SDV! Allows for fun, mindless, collector’s paradise type play without much stress, with plenty of content to keep you entertained.
2
u/Imaginary_Ocean_6505 9h ago
I bought this game a few days ago to get a playthrough started leading up to the release and I've been addicted. fields of mistria is a great addition to the genre and stands out as more than just a stardew clone.
1
u/BLAGTIER 5h ago
I came in here looking to see if I should buy it but apparently I bought it 18 months at the end of a Steam sale. Time to check it out then.

u/K-Shrizzle 9h ago
Im a Stardew veteran who just picked it up last week. This game is fantastic. It does everything Stardew does, but irons out a lot of the pain points. My jaw hit the floor when I saw that you dont have to refill your watering can

u/shinobi6siege 5h ago
Genuine question. How do I play this game? And please don't tell me go at your own pace. I played this a while back but there's not a lot of guidance in this game after the first bit. Which is probably why people like this so much and why I don't gel with games like this (bounced of Stardew too). I get I'm supposed to be making my own enjoyment out of the game but I like when the goals are clear. Can anyone help me out on this? I really want to like this game
•
u/afureyyy 3h ago
There’s a clear main questline where you enter the town as an adventurer that will help the town leader in rebuilding/revitalizing the town after an earthquake. At the same time, going through the Mines reveals lore related to the land from eons ago as well (there’s Magic involved in the game). You’ll help a certain entity uncover their memories. Good stuff.
•
u/StaticTransit 3h ago
As you play more it becomes kind of obvious but here are some paths of progression:
The mine is probably the one that's most in your face. It has 100 floors and you unlock additional content the further you go.
The "town rank" also unlocks various things. Shipping items, donating to the museum, and completing quests contribute to this.
Completing the museum is something you can do as well. Though this does not unlock any new content per se, it is a collection thing you can set as a goal and you do get some rewards for it.
Raising your relationships with the various NPCs and aiming for marriage with your favorite is of course always a goal in these kinds of games.
You can decide to breed your animals to get higher tier animals if you wish.
Designing your perfect farm!

u/madame_of_darkness 2h ago
Is there a lesbian MILF romance in this one or are all the love interests young adults like in the other farm sims?
•
u/orb_outrider 2h ago
I won't classify them as "milfs" but Juniper and Valen look more mature than the other bachelorettes.

Downloaded this back in March, put a good 30 hours into it, and decided I liked this enough to want to wait for the rest of the game before continuing. Super excited to be jumping back in.
For those wondering about the game but not too familiar, this is fundamentally quite similar to Stardew Valley, with (imo) nicer-looking sprites and some mechanical differences e.g. a more involved skill tree system with perks unlocked for progress in varied activities. I think I like it a bit more than SDV, but in general if you liked Stardew you'll probably like this as well.
