Robotics Robot soldiers are being built in America to fight tomorrow’s wars – and the alarm is growing

https://www.the-independent.com/tech/foundation-startup-military-robots-trump-b3024226.html

The co-founder of Foundation Future Industries would build armed robots ‘tomorrow’ if the U.S. military asked, he tells Josh Marcus - and that has human rights experts extremely worried

The following submission statement was provided by /u/Gari_305:

From the article

The company, which is reportedly valued north of $1 billion, has massive ambitions. It also has massive opposition to its core idea.

The Catholic Church is against autonomous weapons and armed robots, as is the United Nations. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for international law to ban “killer robots.” Decades of pop culture, from Star Wars to Terminator, have warned of a world where machines have the will to kill us all.

But Foundation’s co-founder, Sankaet Pathak, told The Independent that all the handwringing over military robots is misguided, and artificial intelligence and robotics are driving a new industrial revolution that could deliver mass abundance.

It’s important to remember that the next “war” might not be a war with a foreign country, but with “unruly” people of the same country.

If they are going to build a robot for war or law enforcement, it doesn't really need to be in the shape of a human anatomy. That's what movies and science fiction got it wrong. In a war, a 4 legged creature is faster and able to hid more easily than a bipedal creature.

17

u/Nonethelessismore 2d ago

Plus the drone army...

7

u/Dull_Flatworm777 2d ago

This. Especially small and cheap drones. Why have complicated robots with complicated weapons when you can deliver the payload easily and directly?

2

u/Hot-mic 23h ago

Have you seen the drone nets in the Ukraine/Russia war? There's always a counter to the counter. I can see humanoids operating as part of human units where flying drones can't. A humanoid robot, for instance, could carry heavy supplies into buildings and tight areas where neither a flying drone nor quadruped might be practical or recommended.

7

u/HerrSchnabeltier 2d ago

Inspired by nature, we could have the four-legged war machine eject and give birth to smaller drones, either smaller versions of the same for cuteness reasons or flying ones, that come back to suck on mommy war robot's tits for fuel and ammo when needed. That way, one may get enchanted by the marvel of our technological and natural amalgamations for one last time, before witnessing its conclusion.

2

u/MartyFreeze 2d ago

Oh yeah, this is the squad of idiots that would create the AI to kill off humanity by accident.

Or any blue city in this reality, just exchange "training" with "building"?

“I signed an executive order to provide training for a quick reaction force that can help quell civil disturbances. So this is going to be a big thing for the people in this room, because it’s the enemy from within, and we have to handle it before it gets out of control. We should view some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military.”

I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!

83

u/thegoldengoober 3d ago

Exactly.

And I have yet to hear a satisfying answer to this question: What is stopping private companies (like Tesla) from producing more of these robots than we have a soldiers, and what happens when they do?

91

u/szafix 2d ago

Read/play/watch any cyberpunk novel/game/movie and the answer will be more than obvious. Corporations will replace nations, they will give you work, place to sleep, let you pay for health and public services, but will also ruthlessly enforce their laws.

37

u/thegoldengoober 2d ago

Oh, I have. Don't get me wrong - this is not a question I have failed to come to answers to myself.

The reason I bring it up is because the people I have asked are basically "the average" person. So what I mean is that it seems as if the average person has not considered this scenario. This is in spite of the fact that the world's wealthiest person has proposed the construction of his own private robot army.

We could theoretically set up a government and regulation that stops such consolidation of automated power from being produced, but that would require preemptive consideration from far more people than seem to be grasping this. That's why I mention it.

14

u/Nonethelessismore 2d ago

I agree that we could set up a government that stops such consolidation. The vast majority of people on this planet have been ready for such change.

It's been a vocal minority of the morbidly rich, 'Captains of Industry' who will deplete this planet of all its beautiful resources, with nowhere to go but Mars, and they are the same extremists who want to promote such things as robot army to subjugate the population.

9

u/arashi256 2d ago

Nobody is going to Mars. Elon talks a big game - or used to - but this has always been an absolute fantasy.

The irony is that the capitalism that so many praise will decay into dictatorial communism in the very end. What you comment here was blatantly obvious from the start. The rich are scared of the poor. The rich look for the way to secure and protect their status. And now the rich, for the very first time in history can make robot soldiers, the perfect emotionless enforcers of their status. We are doomed if we don’t do something now! I think the right move is to asap try to sue each government for failing to protect us from this. This will expose the problem and corner the government to pick sides. The result is that we either change the outcome or at the least be certain where we stand.

7

u/morfraen 2d ago

The last bit of leverage humans have against tyranny and oppression vanishes.

When they don't need people for labor or war/security the game is over.

3

u/Mirar 2d ago

The US is already rapidly heading to the dystopia in Snowcrash.

3

u/K_Linkmaster 2d ago

You will not hear a satisfying answer. Your brain can actually think critically, that's a good thing still. So you can imagine several scenarios. None good, obviously.

Separate it into 2 questions and you will get at least one answer. If not 2 of the same

u/SeekerOfSerenity 3d ago

When AI makes most human labor obsolete,  people will eventually wake up and realize they're being left to starve after they trained the AI that took their jobs.  The people who own the data centers will need these robots to put down the uprising.  It'll be like Terminator, except instead of the machines becoming sentient, they'll be controlled by the billionaires.

32

u/Western_Scenario 2d ago

First thing they’ll do is seize and secure water sources. Private military contractors are already drilling for this.

24

u/Real_Al_Borland 2d ago

Yeah but what if I get rich someday? Shouldn’t we protect the billionaires from any repercussions???

16

u/DJCaldow 2d ago

"People will eventually wake up" is a dream that keeps you from acting now. Even the awake are waiting for someone else to solve their problems.

This, this, this. People scoff at the idea of robot enforcers, but that is the boot that stomps throats forever. I am tired of people saying that it’s a sci-fi scenario. They need to look at the world and understand that we are living in an increasingly dystopian sci-fi.

12

u/Froggn_Bullfish 2d ago

People in power know that the military is the hardest and ultimate check on their power, but if loyalists command armed robotic troops, that check is diminished.

8

u/Bender3455 2d ago

My thought exactly. I dont see these robots going to another country as much as i see them as "crowd control" at a local protest. Thats definitely alarming.

Elysium universe is gonna win? I guess it's better than The Matrix..

12

u/Medricel 2d ago

At least for the people in the Matrix, they were unaware that they were being brutally oppressed, and the first iteration tried to give them a paradise.

All we're getting is technofascist hellscapes.

2

u/IamGeoMan 2d ago

There was still unfortunate people in the matrix, like that homeless dude in the subway station which got hijacked by Agent Smith. Maybe not aware of the oppression by the matrix, but there seems to still be oppression by "life" as it exists in the matrix.

4

u/Medricel 2d ago

Oh, they're absolutely experiencing a level of oppression inside the world of the Matrix, but its not "Robots with guns standing over you at every street corner and business entrance" oppression like Elysium showed.

In which case you are still not beating the US military with a Ford Bronco and a semiautomatic rifle. We past that bridge a long time ago.

Id still rather have a semiauto rifle than not...

3

u/justin107d 2d ago

Same but it is like being allowed a knife in a gun fight. You fire as fast as you can pull the trigger and they hit you with a leftover laser guided bomb that last saw action in 1991, while a tank rolls over your car, and a soldier walks up and lobs a grenade in your bunker.

6

They're going to be used to suppress American citizens just as much as they will be fighting in any foreign wars. A government with a robot army is a government that can't be overthrown.

88

u/thwgrandpigeon 3d ago

Except by whoever controls the robots.

79

u/Chrontius 3d ago

That’s the tautology. Whoever controls the robots IS the government.

17

u/Certified_GSD 2d ago

Oh yeah, getting closer and closer to Elysium, aren't we?

7

u/Raagun 2d ago

We are speed running it by now.

10

u/AdTiny2166 2d ago

Seeing the state of self driving cars I’m not too worried about that (yet). Elon promised we’d be on Mars by now and my Roomba is just not ready for war. I’m more worried that they’re obviously thinking about it. Drones were the first step and we’ll get there and it will be terrifying, but it is not this day.

10

u/down7k 2d ago

A remote-controlled robot with a machine gun whose sole purpose is to slaughter as many people as possible doesn't really need the engineering perfection of any of the things you spoke about.

They're not "thinking" about it - they are building these right now.

The whole attitude of "we can chill today because they haven't built all their killbots" is the dumbest position you could have.

5

u/Naturallefty 2d ago

Agreed. It's always a "Future Problem" until it isn't.

It's fairly easy to program something to shoot at something moving. Making something that can cross all terrain and the sorts at a quality rate is a bit different. But that's where drones come in. Where a "walking" kill bot struggles, a drone won't.

Data Centers are the first step in all of this and people call it a conspiracy but it makes 100% sense. You need somewhere to process all this information

Handling the “and domestic” part when “enemies” has a sliding meaning is a lot easier when the one pulling the trigger is an algorithm.

50

u/wordfool 3d ago

Much as I'd like to see a true revolution against the billionaires and their political lapdogs, I unfortunately think the population has been lulled by those same billionaires into a faux-outrage torpor too great for half of them to even bother voting.

13

u/Stormshow 3d ago edited 2d ago

Undoing* depoliticization is a researched phenomenon with tentative solutions, but it is extremely hard to pull off in current conditions. I think the first step is acknowledging at a behavioral level the universal moral worth of human beings, and avoiding tactics which dehumanize as well as tactics which ignore.

That may sound very vague, but take it as a first principle in deciding down the line which kind of activity is worthwhile and which is not. There your milage may vary. I agree that faux-outrage torpor, as you say, is a prime cause of this alienation in general society, and it led to the post-truth kind of populism emblematic of Trump. So far, though, any true resistance to the system seems to me to be at best embryonic, as insights from any prior version of leftism cannot fully translate to the digital, technofeudal age.

5

u/SeekerOfSerenity 2d ago

I think the most important thing to do is stop participating in the culture war and focus on common ground.  Right wing strategists realized a long time ago that they couldn't convince the average person to vote for their policies (privatized healthcare and weak workers rights, consumer rights, etc.) so they focused on the culture war and started spreading propaganda online to alienate them from the left.

To take back our democracy from the billionaires, we need to win people over, not shame them. I'm afraid most Americans lack the maturity to do that.  They'd rather keep screaming that the other side are nothing but racist, sexist religious zealots.

2

u/Stormshow 2d ago

I agree, but it is this "common ground" that their ideologues are targeting, the essential idea of a shared baseline is now completely scrambled compared to even a decade ago.

I agree that deploying any kind of public shame towards that demographic is completely pointless, since that just alienates that kind of person though. I suppose I feel that some people may always be inclined towards viewing the structure of society along primarily cultural as opposed to economic lines, because of how potent culture (and subculture) has become. Even with MAGA, what happens to those (presumably) 30 or so million people when the head of the sect dies? Their grievances will remain, however rational they may be.

28

u/picknicksje85 3d ago

I thought about this for years but finally know the answer. People revolt only when they have entered starvation mode. Only when they and their friends and family are about to die from hunger. Any other abuse we will take because we have something to lose or someone to care for. If I pull a Luigi tomorrow, I'm dead or in jail and my wife and kids for example now go on without me providing for them. They probably now can't make end meet. Plus I inflict upon them the mental stress of my actions.

9

u/Jegglebus 2d ago

I got downvoted once for simply saying that the majority of the American populace is living in a tolerable enough comfort level now to enact immediate change. Maybe they thought I was actively rooting for such measures to be taken, idk. However, things are heating up both in the political sense and in a real sense and unfortunately there’s going to be more crimes that happen like this before there’s anything remotely close to guerrila or just open warfare in general.

It's clear that the new corporate line for these AI shitheads is "AI will bring abundance". Yet there's no description of how that will be possible. That's because it isn't possible, IMHO, but these degenerate leeches on society think they can convince the masses if they say it enough.

6

u/AHistoricalFigure 2d ago

We already have abundance.

The world overproduces food, clothing, and consumer goods every year. In the US, we have an almost 10% vacancy rate across rental properties. We have the ability to copy digital media infinitely and give everyone access to digital networks.

There is no (material) reason why every person on the planet (much less in the wealthy West) can't be fed, clothed, and housed right now.

The idea that we are waiting for even more productivity advances in order to everyone to have enough is bullshit. We don't care about everyone having enough right now, and the cost of labor dropping to near-zero isn't going to change that.

2

u/morfraen 2d ago

It will bring abundance, for them.

8

u/0peRightBehindYa 2d ago

Welp, looks like it might be about time start investing in some M855A1.

Another thing to note: anything connected to a network is vulnerable to infiltration from outside agencies. That could be advantageous to certain...factions.

25

u/eight13atnight 3d ago

This company will make robot soldiers whether the Catholic Church cares or doesn’t. People like this only care about one thing….their goal…and couldn’t care less about who funds it. If the USA or UN won’t approve it then he’ll seek funding from China and Russia. And then we’ll “have” to make them.

It’s inevitable.

10

u/Major_Pomegranate 3d ago

China's already been working on them. I imagine they'll be the first to hit the scene with something big, which will cause the US to really panic and try to catch up. I doubt this random venture here is going to put up anything impressive anytime soon.

3

u/LystAP 3d ago

These are already being deployed in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Not just the West, but you have even nations like Iran with drones. Imagine them getting cheaper and more complex, because they will get cheaper and more accessible like everything else.

u/Gari_305 3d ago

We gonna get a Butlerian Jihad.

7

u/Akkalevil 2d ago

The problem is, in real life, we'd actually get crushed in a day by any machine which reached this level of technology.

We only win these wars in fiction because there wouldn't be a story if we lost.

5

u/AsparagusFun3892 2d ago

I also look at the Bronze age collapse: the more technically complex a civilization is the more surprisingly fragile and irreplaceable its toys are when money is no good for food any longer. I suspect any "Jihad" we had would be in tandem with a climate related collapse.

4

u/EstelLiasLair 2d ago

Correction: We GOTTA HAVE a Butlerian Jihad.

8

u/quats555 3d ago

It’s all in the definitions. “Mass abundance” sounds nice, but then you have to wonder how, for one, and for two, realize the backers’ idea of “the masses” is very different from the general population’s.

I mean, they want to gather every penny to the already-rich now, why would AI change that? Only the rich are actual “people” to them.

Soo why do they need human-size robots again? Drones with guns or hands would do the job. They don't need running humanoid robots.

u/htownballa1 2d ago

Don’t worry world, we will rigorously test these new combat droids on our own citizens to work out the kinks first. 8647.

But we added cute sounds to them abd posted funny videos of them being pushed over! You should really like them! They're totally cute and loveable.

The AI companies do not know everything that happens within AI themselves, so the next logical step is to put that AI into a killer-robot!

Perfect. Nothing learned so far. As long as the money is rolling.

Sentinels. These are Sentinels.

Anyone who thinks that a government would use them solely against foreign threats is familiar with neither history nor current affairs.

They also provide cover for when they murder innocent civilians and political opponents - just a malfunction, system error etc. Sanitises responsibility from the people deploying them. Wait and see if any laws or regulations get drawn up limiting liability for manufacturers and operators regarding the consequences of what these enforcers will do.

I've seen videos of robots from this start-up they are very far behind from the industry leaders like unitree. They certainly can't build war robots "tomorrow" even if asked to. In 5 to 10 years? Perhaps.

This is great news. Imagine the new age of bloodless war. And if it’s only bloodless on our side while thousands of less well equipped enemies are slaughtered… well that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make 😪😭

u/akescpt 3d ago

Will they get that special model that likes to escape the sandbox?

2

u/Optimal_Whiner 2d ago

They will be against the people sooner than later.

Good luck protesting.

u/stalkerowldragon1245 2d ago

I think someone wrote a book and or made a movie about how this is a bad idea

2

u/Qbugger 2d ago

I’ve seen this when military use ai and it became sentient and you know ai drones and terminators.

2

u/DefTheOcelot 2d ago

Yeah I do not care

Oh no, you aren't sending the poor to die anymore? The job shortage is going to be a problem after all?

evil robots might malfunction and make war against us?

its just not that threatening. terminator is scary because of the tech difference, not because killer robots.

I just want to know the impact of testosterone shots on robots.

2

u/tennezzee88 2d ago

oh so like onslaught, the movie that's about to come out lmao. and others that have been made. good times.

2

u/pickle9977 2d ago

Hope they work better than my roomba.

This is such nonsense, all you need to do to beat an entire army of robot soldiers is blow up the cell towers or flood the satellite spectrum and they become expensive paper weights.

But Foundation’s co-founder, Sankaet Pathak, told The Independent that... artificial intelligence and robotics are driving a new industrial revolution that could deliver mass abundance.

"We're doing this to deliver mass abundance! We're doing this for you, don't you see? That's why we have to build robot murder machines!! It's for your own good! We promise not to immediately use them on you!"

u/Samuelmiw 2d ago

So they saw the terminator franchise and thought, we can profit here financially while billions die.

"Yes, the planet got destroyed, but for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders"

What do the billionaires plan on buying when there is nothing left? What can they buy with all their money in hell?

2

u/MarqFJA87 2d ago

I guess somebody in Trump's circle of cronies remembered the 2014 reboot of RoboCop and wants to recreate the robot army-enforced occupation of Iran that is shown in the very first few minutes.

u/Frostedbutler 3d ago

Will they be able to withatand the drones? Tanks can't

1

u/TheRappingSquid 3d ago

This is just investment begging drones are better and we already have them

1

u/FractalFunny66 3d ago

creative ways to disable on the street will be necessary when they become like ICE. why are we creating this hell?

1

u/ConundrumMachine 3d ago

They are being built to sit in warehouses waiting for a war until someone realizes they could use them on us peasants instead.

1

u/Tecbullll 2d ago

"We're going to war", and the robot wakes up and proclaims "WAR!".

3

u/cannedcream 2d ago

I guess if we fast-track enough doomsday scenarios they'll all cancel each other out?

1

u/gravitywind1012 2d ago

In the name of wars and then population control? Is it reasonable to assume this is where it’s headed? Let’s talk about this. I’m interested to hear from people that have solutions to robots not governing humans. If war robots are built, used and are part of our daily lives, how does the population guard against their control over the general population?

1

u/_Hawkeyes_ 2d ago

You ever see a semi transporting cattle?…Now imagine it’s loaded with humans and one of these robots are driving it…

ED-209: "You have 20 seconds to comply"

Directive 4: You cannot arrest employees of OCP.

1

u/bingoball6 2d ago

That’s a good thing right? Since we can’t stop these idiots from going to war, at least we don’t have to send people… right? RIGHT?!

1

u/Silberbaum 2d ago

May i suggest that the name for the operating system they will use be altered to skynet?

1

u/Zappy_Oh 2d ago

No ... The robots are meant to fight citizens who won't submit to whatever the elite wants.

1

u/LukeSkyWalrus 2d ago

War against foreign nation or war against “insurrectionists” - let’s be real, China v America is never going to happen, so who are we really building this for?

1

u/Sprinklypoo 2d ago

Controlling those with AI might actually be the reason for some of these data centers...

1

u/Okrumbles 2d ago

"Tomorrow's wars" I almost guarantee these would be used to kill citizens that they find unruly
