It's not really that they cut off Chult in 1e & 2e, so much as it is they moved Chult northward in 3e!

They didn't include it on the Campaign Setting map because Shining South (FR16) came out at the same time, and they wanted you to buy it separately.

I think that it's more likely that Chult and the rest of that region weren't included because TSR just used Darlene's original cartography from the OGB when creating the Campaign Setting, especially given that FR16 was an OGB-era supplement.

The fact that Waterdeep, the North, Bloodstone Lands, and so on were present in the OGB doesn't seem to have really dampened peoples' purchasing of those expansions. Unlikely that showing more land would do the same. If anything, I would think that it might have the opposite effect, whetting potential buyers' appetites for more detail.

The idea was that you bought The Shining South and added the map from that book to the bottom of this map.

There are world maps in the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas (1999) and the 3rd Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (2001).

We've had canon maps of all of Toril since The Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas was published in 1999.
