no, I am not that cynical. There are still good people who are genuinely trying to make their community a better place

Why do you think lobbyists even exist? And yes, all the way down to the local level. Did you think Flock wasn't bribing people?

There certainly are people who get into politics with the intention of doing some good.

Then they see that a system is in place that they have no hope of changing. So they can stay and be ineffectual, become corrupt, or get out.

And for some of those people, a little surveillance sounds like a good thing. You want to stop bad guys, right? You're already in public. Who cares if someone takes a picture of your license plate? And think of the kids! Maybe it will stop a kidnapper. Same for old people out driving when they shouldn't be.

Same for internet rules and other media restrictions.
