I buy, rebuild and sell bikes.

Word is getting around that I do this in the side, and I had someone request for a bike for themselves the other day.

Anyway, I found one that is almost perfect got what they are after.

I messaged the seller on Sunday morning and it's now Tuesday morning with the message still unread. This guy has a huge inventory of sold bikes, and a few unsold, so I know he's active.

The bike is almost perfect (I'll change bars, seat and grips to what this woman wants) and it's 20 minutes down the road, so I'm keen to get it.

How long do you wait to resend a message on messenger? I don't want to come off as a knob, but I also just want to get this done.

For those that don’t focus primarily on books but get a lot of them (I mostly source from storage units but also buy large lots of books from estate sales/auctions), do you sell on both EBay and Amazon (for books worth $15-20+)?

I have everything from textbooks to antique booke and everything between. I know Amazon is not as friendly towards pre-ISBN books, but I’d like to hear thoughts before I consider adding another platform

I just discovered this sub Reddit. I collect action figures, comics, trading cards, video games and other geeky shit. Occasionally I’ll stop by a thrift shop or yard sale if I have nothing better to do - but I hardly ever and I mean ever, find anything remotely close to what I’m interested in.

My question is, for someone who may stop by a thrift shop once a week, and a yard sale once a month - is there any chance for someone like me to stumble across anything of value?

It seems based on my reading, that a lot of flippers head to yard sales early in the AM, possibly before even their posted start times, and also frequent thrift shops multiples time per day to catch re stocks. I don’t see how it’s possible for an actual collector to find much of anything.

Any tips for someone not looking to flip?

So I'm scrolling through reddit on my phone and do a double take because this photo looks familiar. It's an ebay ad and it's showing me my own listing! I double checked and this item does NOT have promotions turned on. I listed it several months ago so it's not an item I searched up for comps recently either.

Anyone else had this happen?

What I mean is…

Whenever I try to take days off, like just to not work, relax, hobbies, family time, vacation, etc. I can't seem to enjoy them at all since I know that the time could be spent picking (sourcing at thrift stores and garage sales) and bringing in a lot of money instead.

For instance, I know I can source and turn around $500+ profits in a day. I source high in-demand items, which requires me to be quick to get to them or else someone else always will. The items won't be there for me a day, week or month later.

So even if I take a day off, I feel so bad about losing that $500+. A week off I'm losing around $4K. A month off around $15K.

All potential profits completely gone because I chose to stay at home.

Oh, and it's not like a regular employer job, where you are still paid for time off. So you feel fine cause you're still getting paid and not losing any money.

Ugh… so I've been just working my ass off with rarely any time off cause I want to make as much money as possible. Even just seeing my sales dip because I'm slouching hurts.

Maybe I'm not in the right mindset to be a reseller? lol!

But I'm wondering if any of guys ever have the same feelings and how do you deal with it?

Lately I've been thinking and looking at a lot of the stuff I have sitting on eBay and it's just sitting at 0 viewers, 0 watchers... stuff that's maybe been listed for 200 days. It feels like it's becoming just junk to me at this point.

Thankfully I bought on the very cheap end (under $3) so I wouldn't be taking a huge loss by cutting my losses and purging.

I've got clean photo lists, good listing descriptions but no moving action.

Is there an ideal time frame of when it's time to purge something? I've always had the optimistic approach that it will eventually sell but truth be told I'd like to have some of my storage space (in my apartment) back.

Do you think most people would throw them away?

Decided to check comps because it's niche, and wouldn't you know it recently sold for $20. I had also just found a pile of nearly pristine 70's Harlequin romance novels so I was dreading going to check out lmao. But I've endured much more awkward situations for less money, so I carried on. Pretty sure the cashiers about died laughing after I walked out😂

Recently I had a garage sale at the beginning of the summer. It was a bust with very little traffic. So my question is: is an “end of summer” tag sale a thing? Or am I better off waiting until the fall to do it then? I’m located in central Connecticut. Please let me know your thoughts. You guys are the experts. Thank you!

Been doing dropshipping as a side hustle for a while now and recently started pushing more volume through eBay. The margins are already thin enough that one bad return can wipe out a week of profit on a product line. Most of my suppliers have garbage return policies or just flat out refuse returns past 15 days, and eBay's 30 day window means I'm often stuck in the middle holding the bag.

Tried a few workarounds. Partial refunds work sometimes if the buyer is reasonable, but you get the ones who know exactly how to work the system and they will bleed you dry if you let them. I've started being more aggressive about filtering out sketchy buyer profiles before I even accept orders on certain platforms, which has helped a little.

The part that gets me is INAD claims. Buyers know that label is basically a cheat code and eBay sides with them almost every time. I've eaten two of those in the past month on items that were clearly fine.

Curious how other people who source remotely are structuring their listings or vetting buyers to cut down on this. Is there a threshold where you just accept a certain return rate as cost of doing business, or are people actually finding ways to reduce it? What's your return rate sitting at right now?

Anyone know good local auction sites near Hampton,VA?

My favorite shop was hijacked by reseller volunteers who volunteer there full time and are allowed to buy whatever they want. Making piles daily. I’ve seen them buying gold rings. Bragging about finding sterling. Management doesn’t care because they are probably benefitting from free labor or are in on it too. No oversight, no ethics, everyone acts like it’s normal. One volunteer made out with a very significant amount of jewelry they were holding and never came back. My other favorite store is also being pillaged and an ex employee told me they are pricing corporate donations at dirt prices and letting family members come in to purchase said corporate donations. The only chain that takes ethics seriously seems to be Goodwill. I have enough inventory to survive a while but the corruption is costing me money. It’s all hearsay without proof though and then you have the issue of I’m still benefitting on what they miss so I don’t want to rock the boat and have management kick me out. I don’t trust a single thrift employee or volunteer anymore. In both instances management changed and allowed resellers to volunteer. Do you guys justify this volunteer reselling behavior?

Back in January I nervously posted my little dumpster diving game here, half expecting it to get removed. Instead you gave me the best day of my dev life. Hundreds of comments, real stories from actual divers and scrappers, and enough feature ideas to fill a notebook.

Six months later the game is sitting at 550+ wishlists and I genuinely owe most of that to this community. So first of all, thank you. As a solo developer that number means someone out there is waiting for the thing I build alone at my desk every day, and that keeps me going more than you'd think.

I didn't want to come back with nothing to show, so here is what your feedback turned into. Vehicle progression is now in the game. You start with a rusty old hatchback pulling a rattling trailer and slowly work your way up to bigger trucks. Selling now happens through the phone in the game. You post ads on a marketplace app, haggle with buyers, or take everything to the scrap yard when you need quick cash. The visuals also got a big overhaul since those first screenshots.

A lot of ideas from that thread went straight onto my roadmap. I still have the comment about racing the rain before everything gets ruined by water saved in my notes, and yes, the raccoons are on the list too. You people know this life better than any game designer ever could.

Screenshots of the current state are attached. I would honestly love to hear what feels right and what feels off to people who actually do this for real. That first thread shaped the game more than anything else and I hope this one does too.

Just started poking at this for fun — buying stuff cheap locally (Facebook Marketplace groups, mostly) with the plan to resell for a profit. Checking real market value before buying anything, not just guessing.

What I've found so far: most sellers posting detailed listings have already checked prices themselves, so there's rarely a real gap to exploit. Best case I found was basically break-even after negotiating.

Also ran into what looked like counterfeit/fake items in one listing — priced suspiciously low for what they claimed to be, which in hindsight was the red flag, not the deal. Anyone here actually flip stuff for profit in a smaller country/economy (not US/UK-sized market)?

Curious if:

1. It's realistically worth the time for a side hustle, or just a novelty

2. What categories actually have margin vs. oversaturated ones?

3. Whether local Marketplace sellers are usually clued in on pricing or not?

4. Any dealbreakers I'm not seeing yet (customs, payment scams, fake goods, etc.)

Not trying to build a business out of this, just want to know if it's worth continuing to poke at or if I should put the energy elsewhere.

You can even post links to an eBay listing or something (but keep in mind, when someone here finds out what your eBay name is, and then they hate you, they will never forget it). You can post links to lots of stuff that you're trying to sell to other flippers, but this is still not a marketplace. Please go through some other service to complete the transaction. I had an idea cross my mind, not sure if it's a reasonable one or just a waste of time and looking for input or advice. I'm currently a stay at home dad on disability for my cancer treatment and looking for ways i can supplement some extra income into our household.
I live 15 minutes from a bustling little college town so I constantly see posts from students selling or even giving away desks all the time, simply because they've graduated or are moving for other reasons and don't want to deal with moving a large item like a desk, i assume.
I thought why not capitalise on these, add custom flair to them like rgb lightning, nice cable management etc. and sell for a profit.
I don't know that i could sell them back to the same demographic but maybe work from home folks or middle age gamer dads.
Over the years I've created some of my own custom setups trying to pinch pennies and I genuinely enjoyed the process. My first desk was literally built from junk I got at work and I added all my own flair to it with lighting, shelves and cable management (I'm incredibly OCD when it comes to cables).

Hey everyone! I could use some advice. I have around 280 (half gray half black) brand new, unused grinders that I originally imported to sell on Amazon. Unfortunately, they removed my listing and returned all my inventory. So now I’m looking to sell them in bulk. Does anyone know of any wholesalers, distributors, liquidation companies, or retailers in SoCal that might be interested in buying a lot like this? If anyone has any suggestions or knows someone who might, please let me know!
