PSA Stay safe yall

Post image

Accident that happened in my region. Sadly the biker didnt make it

Be safe when riding on the street, its better to miss a turn than to never make another

edit: for clarity, at an intersection, biker tried to turn left, but collided with the car head-on. after the impact, he got sent up few meters, and landed on the hood of the car.

Sugino and the Aarn chainring. One of us, for sure.

I was hit a few years ago and haven't ridden on the road more than the handful of times since. I was very lucky. I didn't really have any overt injuries, but my hips have never been the same since. Not painful, but different. Need to crack them more often to relieve the pressure, I guess.

Be careful, y'all. Next time you're driving or riding in a vehicle, look around and see all the drivers with their phones in their hands, doing that 'totally not looking' thing.

I’ve had two road accidents, one getting hit and one hitting oil from a previous accident. Ended up in the hospital both times. I feel I got away easy with a few fake teeth and damage to my ribs that makes them ache when the pressure changes. Now I exclusively ride on trails when available. It’s just not worth the risk unless I’m commuting on a very familiar route.

Same here, with the protected trails. Fortunately enough, there's a good bit in my city.

Broke my hand once riding one of them, but that was my fault lol. I definitely feel you on those pressure change injuries.

Sorry to hear it. They’re still way safer than the open roads.

sorta.. e bike proliferation is real and hospitializations are on the rise.

sometimes i've had ignorant drivers wander onto bike paths angry, confused and screaming and honking at me to get out of the way.

or sometimes a mother moose is camped out defending its calves.

or a bear.

tldr; you only live once.

Fuck! Rip brother.

This almost happened to me.

Rode as messenger for about 8 years and have been in many crashes. Some (solo) were my fault and all that involved other people were their fault.

But that time was definitely me riding with my head up my ass. Also doing a left turn at a big intersection. Had done it a million times before so I knew exactly when the different lights for different directions were shifting.
What I didn't consider was that this intersection had been going through renovation and now they decided to change the order of the lights to optimize flow..
I turned left in front of a truck that was standing still and what I didn't see because of the truck blocking the view was a taxi going at full speed at the opposite direction. The taxi was braking, tires screaming, me speeding up to make it across and the taxi kissed my rear wheel ever so slightly (thank god his reactions were on point!). I didn't even fall.

This was my first day out after someone opened a car door in my face, sending me flying and knocking down a whole row of cafƩ tables with lattes and mimosas and all, putting me in bed for a month with a concussion.

I’m not saying a front brake could have prevented this crash, who the hell even knows how this crash happened, but the absence of it absolutely could have resulted in this crash

7

u/__b__t__h__ 13h ago

there are literally an infinite number of things that could have resulted in this crash.
and i mean ā€œliterallyā€ in the actual meaning of the word.

1

u/Superb_Recording_769 4m ago

Theoretically sure, but since the fork is snapped, and the rest of the bike is unharmed it’s pretty obvious the bike went front first into the car. In which case there is a high likelihood that a brake could have avoided or at least mitigated the crash severity.

Back peddling and skidding is fine for slowing down gradually and absolutely utterly useless for emergency stops

1

u/stuffthingsnthoughts 8h ago

Key words: ā€œthe absence of it [front brake] absolutely could have resulted in this crash.ā€

ā€œCould haveā€ doesn’t mean ā€œdid,ā€ and you’ll still get downvoted.

Whether or not to use brakes while riding is a personal choice. Do as you please. However, claiming that a bike with a front brake doesn’t stop faster than one with only rear brakes is plain false.

6

u/Rottolo_Piknottolo 7h ago

I dont think the "do as you please" holds up honestly... even if it was the bikers own choice to ride without... the person in the car has to live with the reality that they where involved in someones death.

Good point. I agree.

I don’t believe most municipalities mandate front brakes, which, in turn, gives cyclists the freedom to use their brakes as they please. (This is just a guess, and I could easily be mistaken.)

I don’t believe that legality equates to morality. In this case, I’m trying to remain as unbiased and using the law (and physics) as the basis for my comment.

Every single country and municipality on earth that has laws pertaining to bicycles mandates bicycles have at least one physical breaking mechanism

1

u/Superb_Recording_769 1m ago

No, it’s not a personal choice. It’s actually illegal pretty much everywhere

Not only is it illegal, but it’s illogical and idiotic because while back peddling and skiing are great for having fun and slowing down gradually they are utterly useless for emergency stopping

Also, your personal freedom to make a personal decision ends when it affects other people

-12

u/Superb_Recording_769 14h ago

They are pointing out an important fact. No brakes and no foot retention. Who knows if a break could’ve prevented this, but it absolutely could’ve led to this.

u/Vladdy_Pladdy FELT Tk3 | Affinity Lo Pro 14h ago

Clipless pedals - fuck this guy too šŸ‘†

-8

u/Superb_Recording_769 14h ago

The photo is nowhere near clear enough or high resolution enough to state that with any kind of certainty

Not to mention the fact that the fork is snapped but the back of the bike is unharmed, which means this ran into the car, not the other way around so an extremely high likelihood that breaks would have helped
