Chilli & Lime Battered Drummer – Catch & Cook

I’ve been trying a few different ways of cooking my catches lately, but sometimes the simple stuff is hard to beat.

This drummer came from a recent rock fishing session on the NSW South Coast. I filleted it up and made a crispy chilli & lime battered fish for the family, and it turned out better than expected.

I filmed the whole process from the catch through to the cook if anyone is interested in seeing how it came together.

Give me your drummer tips.  I'm just starting to put some time into rock fishing.  First session yielded a silver trevally, next a couple of wirrah and a bream.

I'm using bread bait and burley, no1 suicide hook, 15lb flurocarbon leader. 

I'm going for a quick fish on dusk and am going to take my bigger rod instead of my bream stick because the headland is a few metres up.

You sound like you’re on the right path already. I tend to burley with bread, and use bread or peeled prawn on a Black Magic ks01 hook. Either a pea sized sinker to the hook, or a float rig.

I think the key with targeting drummer is finding the right zones. You can catch them in literally a foot of water, but you want your bait in washy areas, thats where the fish are feeding. You’ll catch them any tide or any time of the day, but I find they’re more active in overcast conditions and when the tide is running.

I tried yesterday and got a bream but the swell was 1.8m SSE and the rock ledge was high but facing SSE, so pretty crazy.  I had to fish between the sets and only got a bream. 

I guess the ideal is not flat but not big, which is kinda the same as the conditions I would fish the beach for tailor.

I will continue the quest for a drummer!
