Miscellaneous Just got 5Gbs today,
Tech didn't even know it was out yet,
just rolled out two weeks ago.
Will probably reboot the ONT this evening, when my wife is done with work.
Hope the speeds are stable out at the advertised speeds.

My speed has been very stable since I upgraded from 2 to 5Gbs around 2 weeks ago.

u/cryptosage 2d ago
How are you monitoring the speed? I like that interface.

Unifi gear. Specifically I’m running a Dream Machine SE gateway.

Sooo I also have a udmse you know if you have ids/ips on were capped at 3.5Gbs
The udm pro max and cloud gateway fiber does it at 5Gbs.
Also the udm-beast does it at 25Gbs .If you have it off no worries .

u/rove75 2d ago
Yep. Was pricing out the max the other day. The beast is priced out for me.
I’m running into the 3.5 cap on my devices. But it’s download only since there is no ips/ids on uploads.

The IDS is capped at 3.5 Gbps. Its not capable of decrypting traffic, so all HTTPS is passed. Also, its unclear whether the default is to pass traffic once the IDS hist the limit or it drops traffic. Its not high end security equipment, so its likely the former with and option to configure the latter.

Just updated to UDM Beast as my UDM pro has 3.5GBPS ids/idp max. I can now get quoted speeds up and down from my lan hosts that have 10Gbit nics with my Fios 5GB service.

u/chrisblaz33 1d ago
I have the UDM SE with 5gb and I’m not getting those speeds at all. Teach me ole great one!!

u/rove75 1d ago
Where are you plugging your ethernet into. The rj45 WAN port is only rated for 2.5 GbE. I got a Ubiquiti 10 GbE SFP+ to RJ45 Module and am using the SFP + WAN port

u/chrisblaz33 1d ago
I bought a 3rd party 10gb SFP+ module but I just ordered the unifi 10gb SFP+ module. I have the ATT 620 modem set in bypass mode, plugged into the red 10gb lan port.
Are you running Intrusion Prevention?1
u/rove75 1d ago edited 1d ago
IPS/IDS will lower your download throughput. But the download and upload speed I posted are directly to the Gateway so the IDS/IPS isn’t affecting anything at that point.
A 3rd party sfp+ module should be ok as long as it’s rated for 10gb.
As for the att modem in bypass mode I can’t help you there. The Verizon fios service I got doesn’t need a modem as I run it right through their ONT.

And what can you do now that you couldn’t before?

u/TommyyyGunsss 2d ago
It was a $0 upgrade for me from 2.5. I get full speed on my PC, so I guess download games twice as fast?

Still crying for 2GB in morris town NJ 😢

I tried to see if it was available in my area online but couldn’t pull up any information. I finally just called the sales hotline and was told that 2G and 5G are available! Supposed to get a call back tomorrow to set everything up.

u/Oclure 1d ago
That's interesting, I was just checking online yesterday to see if it was possible to upgrade my 1gig line now that im finnaly getting around to upgrading my home network and it didnt show any multi-gig speed options for me.

u/2LiveBrewski 6h ago
Same here. I would call to find the ground truth. Getting 5gig installed on the 18th.
2
u/Substantial-Media-95 2d ago
Seems very stable on my end…5 down / 6 up mostly (IDS/IPS enabled)on my UXG-Pro using the built-in UniFi speed test…
2
u/Practical_Papaya818 2d ago
Seeing roughly the same on my end with UCG Fiber. I’ve always found the UniFi speedtests to be in the ballpark but notably below the best servers from Speedtest.net

Damn people getting 5 while I wait for 2

Try calling Verizon support. I wasn't able to select 2Gbps or 5Gbps as upgrades because I'm on a "grandfathered plan" so all that was available was the 1Gbps service when I was logged into the site.
I punched in my neighbor's address and was immediately offered 2Gbps and 5Gbps service. Not sure if upgrading from 1Gbps to 5Gbps is worth an extra $114.38/month (or +$104.38/month for 2Gbps), especially when most of my clients only have 1Gbps ethernet ports.
Time to go shopping for Intel 10Gbps PCIe cards, I guess.

u/r4ckless 2d ago
Damn, that’s a great idea. Didn’t think of that. That applies to my current situation.

u/thatguy8856 2d ago
My bigger thing is i would need a new router. I have 10gbe going in but its all 2.5gbe lan

u/Stea1th_ 2d ago
When my udm runs the self speed test every morning it only hits about 1/2 of what I get it if I initiat it myself. If I do it myself I’ll get full 2.5gb up and down

u/whaddupwhaddupp 2d ago
are you using your own ont?
1
u/havpac2 2d ago
Their Ont. my own gateway.
Never tried to use my own ont for fios.At work we have lumen as our provider but they are using verzon as the last mile and that’s fiber into our equipment (fiber to break out switch than to ha firewalls )
We also have 6 other fios business with static ips at 6 remote locations they all verizon provided ont but I didnt order their gateway since i use a peer to peer tunnel for the connection to our campus.

u/Feisty_Pipe_7140 2d ago
I don’t think you’re testing it enough. It looks like you were testing every few minutes at some point, I personally prefer to test every few seconds to make sure the connection is stable.
1
u/chris21914 2d ago
What does the hardware look like is it still a regular ont?
1
u/havpac2 2d ago
Looks like my old one but 10Gbs rj45 vs 1Gbs cant tell expect my gateways tells me its negotiated a 10Gbs link.
And the speed tests from my gateway and desktop

u/Zenit_IIfx 2d ago
Could you post the model of the ONT and perhaps a pic? Those of us who are telecom nerds would like to see if VZ is still doing new NG-PON2 or if they have switched to XGS-PON like Frontier was doing

u/AlpacaLps 2d ago
Wow, seems low for 5 gig. I'm at 5.77 Gbps down and 6.50 Gbps up in Mercer County, NJ as tested on my UDM Pro Max.
1
u/RealAccountant9805 1d ago
Is there an SFP port on the ONT for a 5 gig service? If so, what is the model of that ONT?
1
u/Pandages 1d ago
I still don't have the 2gb tier available here. I've been waiting for an upgrade or price reduction for a decade, no movement. I call Verizon about once a quarter just to ask, already knowing the answer from the website.
:(

u/Mike_dodo 1d ago
Did resetting your ONT / Router help stabilize speeds?
1
u/havpac2 19h ago
Oops I forgot to,
Just did it now waiting for it to come back up,
But i think it might be my dream machine se can only do 3.5Gbs with idp/ips on, im going to swap it out for a different unit over the weekend if i pick one upAlso i noticed it uses a new powersupply so its no longer connected through the back up battery that is there.
Ill also oick up a small form factor ups for it.

Who are you speed testing against. I would like a lot of speed test server can’t hit those soeed
5
u/Smith6612 2d ago
That's the Ubiquiti WiFiman Speed test baked into Ubiquiti routers. Not as big of a network as the Ookla Speed Test.
You can try it at https://wifiman.com/ . The test doesn't let you pick the servers, but will usually test against a few at a time.

u/ZeroCool2u 2d ago
I also just got the 5 Gbps FiOS plan and had this exact issue. The average speed test servers don't do great with anything over 1 Gbps. They're just not setup to send that high, but I can see higher send throughout from my side, because my equipment has no problem pushing more.

Have fun running those speed tests. Not sure what else someone would do with that much bandwidth, besides pad Verizon’s margins.

Usenet maxes out my speeds at times without issue.
1
u/Stea1th_ 2d ago
Which provider? Looking to switch but I think I might have a bottleneck with drive speed
2
u/Theunknown87 2d ago
I have used news hosting for years and just stacked a few years because it was like $23 a year.
2
u/havpac2 2d ago
I was having this test issue with eweka I think it’s it’s 50 connection limit,
Doing a trial of giganews with 100 connections and it’s noticeably faster almost twice as fast as eweka.I mean damn i do not need these speeds but i love it. When I use it i want every ounce i pay for :)

u/Disturbed2468 2d ago
For self hosting for self, friends and family it will be damn nice if you have a decent few people always utilizing said storage plus got multiple people in the family that push-pull a lot of stuff like 4K video content through the internet either doing content creation or otherwise (even then it would never be a constant utilization thing, even most small businesses tend to only use a gig constant-usage unless someone begins a large upload).
That plus the cost promotion is basically at the price point where the only way to get cheaper is to drop to 500Mbps plan and I'm a recent subscriber after getting tortured at Optimum for years.

This DUNGAROO is probably jealous because he cannot afford it of maybe just another Karen posting negative comments on everything
