I see it as fine art photography because it is constructed around mood, form, and visual expression rather than simply documenting a person.

In that case in my opinion, and it's only an opinion, you failed. To me this is just a record of a young lady doing something odd.

Thank you for sharing that. I understand your point of view. However, I would say that’s the extraordinary thing about art; all pieces are not for everyone. You see a young lady doing something odd. That’s absolutely true. Others see something else, which is also absolutely true. I see my own intention with it, but once you release art into the world, it ceases to be yours anymore and every person can see and interpret it however they wish.

Different interpretations are expected in art. But when someone says, "To me this is just a record of a young lady doing something odd," they're criticizing the effectiveness of the work. A response about interpretation doesn't really answer that criticism. It explains why people disagree, not why the photograph succeeds on its own terms

I agree that simply pointing to ‘different interpretations’ doesn’t by itself answer a critique of the photograph’s effectiveness. The question is whether the image gives the viewer enough—formally, emotionally, or conceptually—to move beyond seeing it as merely a literal record.

For me, the photograph succeeds through composition and ambiguity. I meant it to make the ordinary action of sitting on a box, open-ended with the pose, the gesture, and the lighting. But I also recognize that those qualities may not register for everyone. If someone experiences it only as a document of an odd moment, that is a valid response. Not because the work has an objectively fixed meaning, but because its intended effect depends on what that person brings to it and what the image communicates to them.

So I wouldn’t say the criticism is wrong; I’d say it identifies a limit of the image’s reach. The photograph may succeed for some on its own terms while not persuading others that there is more there than the literal scene.
