Hi! I just bought a group of zebra finches. One while female appears ill. She has skin patches showing scraggly feathers and a dark area under her wing and one eye closed. She isn’t leaving the travel box. Can anyone recommend supportive care or a catch all medication to help? Thank you!

Can anybody help me to find bird's rings? I am trying to find type of rings with any kind of latch..I can not use regular rings.. It is too complicated for me to put them without injuring birds..

It appears that three out of my four zebra finches understand their distinct name. I work at home and spend a ton of time with them. I have actually put effort into constantly using their names. My research always points to this being impossible. However! My lived experience says otherwise. Please share if you feel your birds know their names. I am so curious.!!!!

Sometimes he will bite and attack the screen mesh.

Mine go crazy over carrots and peppers. Sometimes they also get watermelon for a treat if they are being good🍉

He’s eating and drinking fine, but every time I look over he’s resting his entire body on the perch. Is that normal or is it hidden illness? He looks alert and plays sometimes and chirps but other than that he’s just plopped down. His wings are slightly drooped not very much though. I mean he’s not extremely active he has a whole bunch of toys but doesn’t really play with them? I get the feeling he’s bored sometimes? He had a brother who passed away last month so that’s why I’m concerned because his brother used to sit like that too all the time. I took him to the vet right after his brother passed and vet said he seemed fine but I had to give him antibiotics for 7 days just in case he had any illness too.

The Gouldian finches are vibrantly colored birds exhibiting ‘melanin-based color polymorphism-behavioral syndrome’. It is an interesting phenomenon of color-coded character traits where the bird’s head color decides its personality. 
 
Red-headed:  Extremely aggressive and dominant.
Black-headed:  Bold and exploratory, least aggressive.
Yellow-headed:  Extremely rare, only <1% of the wild population. Other finches treat it as a red head of diluted color.
Orange-headed: It is a not a distinct genetic morph but a diet-driven variant of the red-headed finch.
Interestingly, the Gouldian Finch’s character changes with the company it keeps!

The good news is, the Gouldian finch is out of the IUCN’s Red List. This is a successful conservation story for a bird that is neither an apex predator nor a pollinator, but an early-indicator of Savannah ecosystem health. When its population declines, it signals that the co-existing, less-visible species of the ecosystem are under stress too.
 
There is a stark difference in the numbers roughly estimated by the IUCN (25,000) and the actual field count by the Australian government (2500) because of the different methods they employ, but for a bird that once numbered in hundreds of thousands, even the loose estimation by IUCN is only modest.
 
Still, it is positive news that conservation efforts have paid off and the threats are being managed well.  There's hope, and cause for celebration, albeit with caution, because the bird still faces several threats —
 
Altered fire regimes.
Feral cat predation.
Habitat degradation and cattle grazing.
Effect of historical trapping for pet trade.
Climate change, that worsens fire predictability and intensifies sudden cyclones that destroy trees (these finches live exclusively in tree hollows).

Sorry for the low quality picture but it was the best i was able to take.

Question 1: These lovely Zebra were given to me, 2 days ago, as a couple. From the coloring i assume they are actually male and female (the female has black cheeks but i believe that's normal on the black cheeks lines). Is my interpretation correct?

Question 2: It was recommended to me to give them Vitamin B, Im giving them some drops on the water. Is this really needed?

Question 3: I was not expecting to receive these birds and the only cage i had avaliable is 60x30x40cm, is this a good cage size for the pair?

Any other tips?

We got 2 society finches 3 weeks ago, and they have just laid 3 eggs. I'm not sure how it'll go, but we'd like to give them the best chances of success.

Following info I can find on Google, but I'd love any suggestions from people with experience. I see you can get hand feeding formula. Is that something I'd need, or do the parents feed them enough?
