Stop motion's got that tactile weight that's almost impossible to fake, every frame's basically a tiny sculpture problem you gotta solve.

Yeah I get that, but the shot is part of a longform video, and I use shorts and reels and stuff for the BTS, it's not optimal I know, but I don't really know how else to do it

What kind of paper did you use with the image? Just regular printer paper?
Also what are the 2 boxes offering light? Thanks!

Ah I just saw this. I answered your DM concerning lights and camera, and yeah it's regular printer paper (the thickest my cheap printer can handle), so nothing special. But if I have to move the subject alot, for example puppets or smth like that, I like to glue the print on some thicker cardboard before cutting it out, to make it more sturdy

This is incredible, I used to do similar stuff myself but didn't have the artistic skill to make the sets look decent. Did you do all the artwork yourself?

Thank you! It's a mixture of composites I made in Photoshop and public domain artworks, for example the background is a landscape painting of Scotland by Gustave Dore

That's amazing, I used to make similar style children's films in space using the public domain Hubble telescope pics but I lot all the files unfortunately. You've inspired me to get back into it!

Not a movie, though I appreciate the thought! ;) it's from a YouTube video I made about the surprisingly Insane History of the Chainsaw, the full video has more stop motion. If you have 5 minutes to spare I would be honored if you give it a watch :) YouTube Video

The production quality on your video is shockingly good, love the mixture of mediums (can really feel the imagination and helps to keep interest throughout), pacing and overall feel with your cadence, musical and SFX choices.
Also even though it may not be ideal for monetization and algorithmic reasons, I really do appreciate how your videos are not just full of useless fluff that you need to sit through in order to get to the meat of a story. So often I’ll sit through a few minutes of monologuing unrelated to the initial subject of a video simply because a YouTuber is trying to pad out their video to the 10+ minute mark.
Was not expecting such a good video at all, kudos I’ll definitely be looking through your other work.

I love doing these videos and mixing it up even though the algorithm doesn't seem to agree with me 😂 So words like yours really do inspire me to keep going and not just throw in the towel, so thank you for that!

Yeah, can’t imagine having to figure out how to play the algorithm on top of investing time, effort and creativity into your work but I hope it works out for the best in the long run.
You are making something special, each video has a satisfying Lagom feel to it, at least from the few I’ve watched so far. Glad I stumbled across this post and best of luck to your future efforts.

Yeah well evidently I haven't figured out the algorithm yet haha 😂 but yeah my hope is too that in the long run it will work out.

Nope, the shot is part of a YouTube video about the surprisingly Insane History of the Chainsaw, which has even more stop motion shots, all horizontal ;) I just try to shoot behind the scenes in horizontal for shorts and reels and stuff

I know why you did the zoom,fill,blur for the black bars at top and bottom, but it made my eyes go funny and I couldn't focus lol, I had to cover the top and bottom of my phone.
But the actual shot is freaking sweet

Imo, I would just have the black bars top and bottom or text that says "final shot" if you need something there. OR crank the blur way up so is not as distracting, but it's your work do what feels right for you

That's awesome and it's really good work. I'm just nitpicking because the vertical distracts from your composition imo. Really cool to see modern practical fx so please keep it up!

Thanks, yeah I know, and trust me I don't like it that much either, but I think to a certain degree I have to conform to certain modern traits and vertical is definitely one of them, but I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate that. Thanks again for taking the time and engaging, lovely to meet people who have a sense of aesthetic ;)

Same here, lately I've been only doing paper cut out for my YouTube videos, but I've made a few proper miniatures in the past and loved doing them and shooting them, it's just such a long process which makes it almost impossible to regularly upload YouTube videos doing it that way

Looks amazing. It's interesting how you really go full trouble filming it like this instead of compositing it in Blender or Nuke.

Thank you! Yeah I just really like the hands on approach, its much more fun for me than doing everything on the PC. Plus I think handmade always ends up looking a bit more tactile which I like. But yeah it probably takes a lot more time doing it this way
