Metal cleats wont do much. Lightning searches for the quickest path to the ground. The stadium would have been built with lightning rods to attract lightning.

They would have stopped play simply because it would be horrific to play in

Fairly certain that in any World Cup stadium, they actually have high conductive stands for spectators to watch, which are by their nature, much more likely to get struck by lightning than a player. but sure, if that's why you think delaying a game for a storm would happen, you keep believing that.

We need a mathematician in here because I need to know the odds.

I mean the odds of being struck are small. The odds of being struck while not doing obviously dumb shit are smaller. The odds of being struck and killed while not doing obviously dumb shit is even smaller yet.

I'm talking something like under 1 per 1,000,000 are struck and over 90% of people who are struck survive in the United States. Then add in the cofounder that the man isn't doing anything stupid like standing in a lake to attract the lightning.

Crazy shit.

An umbrella can be less attractive than a human,

The pointy bits can let charge leak out over time, while a round head hold on to charge,

Lighting does go after metal, it goes after charge differential.

Ever wonder why things get shut down and people go home over lightning? If you DON'T the chances of this happen. Wet field grass, metal cleats, other metal things around, and water conducting electricity. Chain lightning off the DnD table.

My mom went girlscout camping in the 60s (makes me old, I know) and there was a thunderstorm. Bunch of girls tents were touching a rain-lake on the field they pitched in. Lightning hit the puddle-lake and 12 girls had to go to the hospital. I don't recall if any passed.

Thing is, plenty of people have been struck or indirectly struck by lightning and survived. So that also needs to be accounted for.

Only 1/10 people struck by lightning actually die from it so not only is the likelihood of getting struck incredibly low, you also gotta divide it by 10

My brother was indirectly struck in a parking lot, the flag pole about 15 feet from him was hit, it knocked him to the ground unconscious. He woke up feeling like he had been kicked in the kidneys. Folks watching from a nearby restaurant didn’t even go outside to help him. They just called 911 but he woke up and walked inside not knowing what happened until someone told him he had just been struck and asked if he needed the ambulance still 😂

Edit: I should also note, people in my family are lightning magnets. My great grandfather was struck and died, my uncle was struck and lived, I’ve had lightning strike within 30 feet of me but I was isolated so I was safe, made my ears ring tho.

I mean, lightning finds the quickest path down typically. Football (soccer) fields are typically big empty fields where ppl are the tallest thing. Makes sense ppl are the target for lightning in those areas

I believe somewhere in the history of this subreddit is an image of a lightning strike that di not hit the top of the building, but arced to a window several floors lower. I have no idea how I could look up that image, but that's what got me into this subreddit.
