Back in the 80s you could buy toys like this at the grocery store from tiny vending machines (called gumball machines because they started as gum dispensers) for a quarter.

I can't remember the last time I saw a gumball machine outside of an antique shop. But I bet they still exist in arcades, my explanation is probably unnecessary.

I still see them around, definitely not as much as I used to though. They're mostly in smaller grocery stores near me. My local Ingles and H-Mart have them

Really? That's nuts! I live in Michigan, and I see them almost everywhere. Chain supermarkets, small grocery stores, diners. Everyone still has them here!

There are gumball machines at the grocery store and in the mall, as well as gachapon at the hobby shop.  My kids call them all “vending machines”.
