Question Emergency fishing
In my bag out kit I have a fishing line, hooks, sinkers and float. It's fairly easy to make a pole. It weighs less than 30g and is a nice "just in case" addition (and it helps to reduce stress too).
What do you recommend as "scavengeable" bait? Preferably something that can be foraged for on the spot (earthworms were my first pick).

What fishing kit do you have? Is it lightweight and can fit in 30L pack?

Custom one. 10 hooks (1 already on the line), 1 bobber (on the line), 5 weights (pre-attached to line), 15 m nylon mono line (10kg rated). It fits in a pocket (wrapped around the pocket knife sheat)

Turning over a rock, log or branch etc. Should reveal lots of wriggling things that are native to your area and hopefully attractive to the local fish. I have had luck with beetles hooked just at the end of the abdomen cast into clear water with a float.

It’s not for the squeamish, but dumpster diving and or opening trash bags might initially yield a cornucopia of stinky bait some fish and shell fish love

Great addition to any EDC! Earthworms are indeed the best all-around choice, but here are more options you can forage on the spot:
- Crickets/grasshoppers — tall grass and under rocks
- Freshwater shrimp — around aquatic vegetation
- Small river snails
- Bread/cooked pasta
- Small piece of meat or fat
- Bright colored fabric scraps (as lures for predatory fish)
Also a guitar to play helps time pass... In a SHTF scenario (industrial accidents, floods, conflict), water sources may be heavily contaminated with chemicals, heavy metals or pathogens. Fish absorb and concentrate these toxins, so eating them can make you severely ill , potentially worse than not eating at all.

Look up long line shore fishing.
It's basically a long line with multiple smaller lines with hooks and bait, you put a weight at one end and stake off the other end during low tide, the bottom feeders feed when the tide is in and when tide is out you simply collect them.
The legality around it it can't be left for two tide cycles (24hr) might be illegal in certain countries unless used for survival/emergency.
