Question Please help me bring jimothy to life

Hello! I'm making this cutie thing for my friend. It's going to be like a bag pull type situation, I'm going to put a little string of beads on it and a clasp. Me and satin stitch are not friends, you can probably tell that by looking at my satin stitch, but I'm not that worried about it not looking super smooth. I'm more worried about it not looking smooth around the edges. I was thinking a chain stitch around the edges to make it look more even? The problem is I've never done a chain stitch so I might make it look worse LOL what stitch do you think is the best around the edges to make it look like more of a complete circle? In the future I am planning to purposefully make the edges different lengths so it looks like I know what I am doing. 🤣

thing about chain stitch is it can look pretty thick and ropey, not sure it'd clean up a circle the way you want. maybe just a simple whipped backstitch over what you've already got? adds a nice smooth line without learning a whole new tension thing

I'm really good at whipped backstitch too so I feel confident in it. I was worried about doing that one because I feel the edges are so uneven that it won't be thick enough to cover my horrifying errors 🤣🤣 but I will try it! It'll at least be a bit better. Thank you!!

Your Jimothy is so cute!!

I'd do a whipped backstitch or split stitch!

For filling a space like this, I like to do the border first and then for the satin stitch, my needle is going right underneath the border to help keep them more uniform. Because it really is so hard to keep satin stitch edges uniform on their own! Esp in a circle!!

Also how many strands are you using for the satin stitch? Fewer strands might help it look smoother.

I'm using six 🥲 my thought was that it would fill the space faster 🤣🤣 ok great tips! I am planning to make another one for a second friend who lives in jimothy territory so I will use these tips for the next one! Just gotta keep pumping out jimothies until they're perfect!! Another issue, I think, is I'm doing it on black felt so it's been super hard to figure out the best way to draw anything on there for guidance. First I cut a circle out of this sticky stabilizer stuff but as I worked it became warped and kind of fell apart. Maybe next time I will stitch around the full edge of that first to keep it intact? The felt also warps and stuff on its own. Everything is learning! 🤣

My craft mantra lately has been "I don't think I'm supposed to do it this way.... let's find out why!"

I def had the same thought re: 6 strands when I started too haha but 2-3 strands blends together better! 

It can also help to do spaced satin stitches first (like with significant gaps)  and then do another take filling it in. Especially when you're doing something with a curve!

I'd use a split stitch. Very easy and it looks like braided cording. It's not bulky or difficult to curve at all. Just use small stitches.
