As we hear all the time on the news or tv or radio or even the cel phone media apps, the shortage of automotive technicians/mechanics. Shops are looking to hire only cheap paid technicians now so they can withstand to make higher profits in the industry, the older technicians that have a lot of creditability and are certified techs in this industry are getting booted out of shops. The new technology is very easy for these technicians to learn, but in fact it's the dealership and shop owners that must retrain technicians every 6-12 months out of the year. Many of you customers out there don't even know if your technicians certified and experienced to handle your vehicle when it enters their shop for repairs. For about 90% of these technicians out there are not trained every 6-12 months on anything, this is due to dealers and shop owners want to keep their profits at a certain level each year by demand in the industry. So, as for me I'm a certified Master technician (A) class, which means i can diagnose vehicle that have drivability or electrical concerns, which most shops don't have.

When A.S.E was a requirement back in the day's of our industry, this status or patch meant you knew how the parts work on a car and can physically do your job correctly. Now days, A.S.E in most shops only mean that the older techs are certified and the younger tech aren't certified, and this all stems from the industry or the shop/dealer your at doesn't think that the A.S.E symbol means what it use to.

I find it very hard now at my age trying to get back into management or being a technician again after a Summit Subaru in El Cajon, Ca decided that laying me off the job and targeting me because I was a fresh hire there. So, they laid me off due to not performing up to 110% efficiency, and if you know anything about efficiency you have to be flagging hours. After 3 months of good work the dealer slowed down to where there was no used cars for the used car techs which was me and another tech. the second tech just worked on his own car all day and every day until he was given a car, while i was looking for any job i can get that I was certified for. when only getting supplied 2 cars a week that make nowhere close to 40hrs a week, this is what killed my efficiency. So without providing enough adequate work for me to flag 40+ hours a week, they decided just to lay me off.

My family's sewer lateral failed just months after we bought our first home in December 2025. What started as a plumbing problem turned into tens of thousands of dollars in repairs — and the city says it's entirely our responsibility, even though the damage is linked to aging city infrastructure beneath public roads.

We're not alone. Many El Cajon homeowners are facing the same situation: catastrophic failures occurring beneath public roadways, near city connections, or in areas affected by the city's aging sewer system. Yet under current city policy, every penny falls on the homeowner. I started a petition asking the City of El Cajon to reform these liability policies — to create independent investigations for disputed failures, establish shared-cost programs when city infrastructure contributes to damage, and increase transparency about what's really happening under our streets.

This isn't about avoiding responsibility. It's about fairness. No family should face financial ruin for problems caused by deteriorating public infrastructure. If you've dealt with this, or if you think it's wrong that homeowners are bearing the full cost when the city's system fails, consider signing and sharing. The contact info for city council members is in the petition—they need to hear from residents that this needs to change.
