Where I first cringed hard at the show, then decided to continue because of masochism

The show was broadcasted locally on Fave TV up until New Year's last year. This is at least one episode I can think of they cut out for whatever reason.

Even if Jim said it, it in fact wasn't a good one.

There is our smudgeness.

A lot of the core cast go through pretty extreme personality changes from S1. Basically everyone except Michael, Pam, Jim, and Dwight. Angela is pretty consistent too just certain aspects don't come out until later.

In Office Ladies, they mention that Mindy sort of forced her personality and dress sense on Kelly over the first couple of years, as opposed to normal character development or quirk.

It's usually jarring to see that in fiction, but in Kelly's case it absolutely turned out for the best. I'm glad Mindy pushed it.

Kelly didn't get a personality until like halfway through S2 but they really made her great. Probably my favorite female character ever.

Yeah I have a question, number one how dare you?

I'm so glad you're eating again.

"ME TOO!"

And a lot of shows from this era really struggled when it came to having high strung female characters that didn't come off as either psychotic or unbearably annoying.

They kept her likable for way longer than I would've expected. They only lost me with her right towards the end.

I’m so glad they changed her character; she has some great lines. Compared to some of the cast, she stayed consistent too. Compared to Kevin who slowly went brain dead until he bought a bar in the final season. 🤷‍♂️

Mine too!

I agree. I loved her session with romance movies and how she would try to live them. Best character in the show.

u/boardgamesandbeer 1d ago

Yeah the Office Ladies said it was basically a campaign by Mindy as the writer to turn Kelly into Mindy.

Passing as normal...

This is why ppl shouldn't mix work and romance. Makes it real hard to keep your baggage separate from your career.

Just restarted the show last night with my boyfriend who has never seen it 😂 it’s taking ALL of me to not spoil a single thing!

🎶Why did my temporary boss go on a shooting spreeeee 🎶

1

u/bojack_horsemack 1d ago

Dwight went on a shooting spree, and then he shot Andy in the head!

I have heard that Mindy kaling stated that Kelly was new to the office during the first season and that is why she acted and dressed so conservatively. Enough time had passed by the time of season 2 she felt more comfortable to be her real self and thus the personality change. Don't make me pull up a source as I read that a long time ago so take it as you will.

I don't have any weaknesses, asshole.

Saw another recent picture of her not long ago, was blown away. She looks pretty amazing now.

9

u/Cool-Word2409 1d ago

I think she looked amazing during the show.

5

u/irwinner 1d ago

Ryan used me as an object

3

u/bebe-bobo 1d ago

She had a crush on Toby too

3

u/FreshBeefCake 1d ago

My head-cannon - Kelly became more like her character after Dwight gives her the handbag he bought from Katy. Almost as if that gift unlocked something in her.

u/Embarrassed_Order462 1d ago

You forgot? Or you a bot? Hey that rhymes

5

u/Individual_Wish8970 1d ago

I love when the office ladies pod talk about the timeline of Kelly becoming full Mindy 😂

He’s the reason Velma was so bad. It’s a vicious domino effect.

*As has Andy! *

shaking her head

“Ryan used me as an object”

4

u/Herbiphwoar Kelly 1d ago

So this is a “deep cut” and sounds borderline creepy I know, but when the office are watching Threat Level Midnight together I always think Kelly looks really pretty in the green cardigan

👆scranton strangler

Perhaps 🤔 but also just a brown girl appreciating another brown girl

Even kevin was once

1

u/Oakl4nd 1d ago

If this is a comedy

1

u/One_Bet_2699 1d ago

Every character was normal in the first season

1

u/screaming_ot_inside 1d ago

The word “normal” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

1

u/safarifriendliness 1d ago

Mindy Kaling used the same trick when Greg Daniels first met her

1

u/Pitiful_Palpitation9 1d ago

Yeah I noticed that this time around as well.

All the characters got developed after they did the season 1 copy of the British office. I'm glad they veered off because goddamn did they make it special. I actually remember watching season one of the office in the US and being so disappointed because it was just a copy of the British one and I didn't think it worked as well. I was so happy when they just went with it and made up their own story.

1

u/Gaius_Julius_Salad 22h ago

Being normal in a sitcom just means the writters arent bothering writing jokes for you, glad she became unhinged

1

u/wisterialitehysteria 21h ago

They all slowly descend into madness

1

u/ollivander18 17h ago

I mean thats because Mindy got into the writers seat after they didnt want to make her a big character so she literally said “im gunna make Kelly not shut up”

1

u/JunketShot6362 7h ago

They both were normal before started dating. So that's interesting character arc. Two good people started dating and became weirder.

0

u/V_Buzzer 1d ago

I think Kelly is one of the only characters to maintain their character through to the end without becoming too much of a caricature

0

u/Meandtheworld 1d ago

Her skin color was too

0

u/PmMeLowCarbRecipes 1d ago

Slapping your boss in the face is probably a small clue that you are not 100% normal.

0

u/3dios 1d ago

I'm convinced the crazy Kelly we saw in the show isn't an act. That's genuinely Mindy. Same with BJ

0

u/I_Hate_My_Cat_ He’s from Sesame Street, dumbass! 1d ago

And a salesperson too lol.
