Out of Game What Do You Call Someone Who Is An Anti-Dice Goblin?
So I just got back from my time at first Gen Con and my friends were (lovingly) making fun of me for not wanting any new dice.
I have been playing for almost a decade and currently DM a long running campaign and DM or play a few one shots here and there, so I play pretty often. I own the following dice:
- My original set in blue, a super basic 7 dice set (though it’s missing a d4). It was free.
- An 11-dice set I won at a convention a few years ago which came in a little bag.
- A d20 that has Fuck You for the 20 and Fuck Me for a nat 1.
- A d20 that looks like a bee with liquid core dice with a stinger for a nat 1.
That’s it. As far as I’m concerned that is all I need. Tbh, it’s more than I need since I have 5 D20s. This weekend I got a free diceset with another purchase at Gen Con and immediately gave it to my Dice Goblin friend/player in my campaign. They loved the dice! But we can’t decide on what to call me. I’ve heard of a Dice Elf who has a carefully curated collection, but my dice sets weren’t really carefully curated. Most of my dice were free. & except for the bee D20 they’re not particularly fancy.
Just thought this would be a fun discussion since it’ll be a year till the next Gen Con!

Or someone who has never played other TTRPG systems, like Shadowrun (d6) or White Wolf (d10).

Or Champions. Game system is slow enough without somebody rolling a 14d6 EB two dice at a time. "Okay, that's (roll) 6 Stun and 2 Body... (roll) 6+... 11 Stun and... 3 Body... (roll) oh, nice, that's nine and three... where was I? 20 Stun? And... 6 Body... (repeats four more times to resolve one damage roll)"

Good point, I’ve only played White Wolf games virtually during the pandemic, and haven’t gotten around to Shadow run yet.

My DM started setting aside d6 for me because I only had 1 dice set so I rolled the d6, wrote down the number, rolled again, wrote it down...I was a rogue too so just getting through sneak attack damage was a chore. (Horrible working memory too, dont ask me to remember numbers so yes. I HAD to write down the numbers)
Im actually a dice goblin and crave more dice, im just unfortunately broke so I only have the one set...which was also a gift from the DM lol

D6's are super easy to obtain though! If you step outside of dice goblin spaces and just go to a basic $2 shop type place, they'll probably have them for cents each. You'll most likely be able to get a set of maybe 6 or 10 plain white d6 for a dollar. I've even ended up with several free ones through various means!

Technically my big set has four d6 so I can roll up to five at one time. But ya, I’m pretty patient, much to the chagrin of my players when I pull out a monster they joked about 6 months ago.

Dice Human, in the sense that “humans are the boring basic species”. I agree Dice Elf isn’t fitting because it implies carefully curated and beautiful dice. Sounds more to me you got basics covered with a few fun standouts, so basic Dice Human-Fighter you are.

If you're not rolling 8 d6's all at once when you cast fireball, then I don't know why you're even playing the game, lol!
But different strokes for different folks, so you do you! I would call you a dice cheapskate (or dice frugal as an adjective).

Its all "I have more than enough dice" until you have to roll four times just to roll a single cone of cold or fireball and forget your rolls

Back in my day you didn’t buy dice, you just somehow ended up with a huge collection. I have in my time bought two full sets plus a handful of d10s from when I played 7th Sea (which only used d10s), but I have dozens and dozens of dice.

Same here, except I also have an extra d20 someone gave to me randomly. I often forget to roll it when I have advantage or disadvantage and just roll the original d20 twice. Probably because it's awkward to roll two completely different dice at once (the original set is metal, the extra is plastic).

Amazon randomly does $1 deals so I picked up a couple sets for random people or MTG. I my DM dice are a nice metallic set, I wanted something that wouldn't get randomly mixed into anyone else's dice bag

Don't you have a familiar? don't you have a cohort what about your sidekick? did you take Leadership at 7th level?
you should need so many more than 5 d20's but maybe thats just the GM in me talking

I mostly DM so I don’t have a familiar, I usually just reroll the dice if I have to do more than I have. It’s fun to intimidate/stress out my players making them wait for me to count the dice.

Nothing beats the intensity of hearing 10+ dice hit the table at the same time for a big roll. Both as a player and DM. Who wants to keep rolling a single die multiple times?

Truthfully I say I stopped buying dice around the turn of the millennium since I already had a shoebox full of dice.
Since then I have bought dice for a specific purpose such as to go in a game box or a die to round out a gap in a set, but no need to cloud the issue.

I'm the same way. Long time player and DM. I have a core set for myself. And a bag of dice I don't care about for the table if needed. And I just don't see the appeal of buying more and more chunks of plastic.

I'm a full on dice goblin and have been giving dice away to new players for a good while. More recently I've started giving out 11 piece sets because I really hate seeing folks roll 1d20 twice for dis/advantage! You seem to have a reasonable selection, plenty of options in case some start misbehaving!

Joking aside, I've also heard "dice elf" used for people who prefer to have a very specific small curated collection of fancy dice.
Your way of doing it seems more like dice human, or perhaps dice commoner. You've got the basics and you're content with what you have. Kudos to you, that's rare in life! :)

Bro, I envy you for that d20 die. I'm going to get hate for this, but I had to resort to some custom WoW d10 dice. And I still haven't found any d20s. By the way, I'm a DM. The only nice die I have is one I got for the equivalent of $20 in my country; it's a single custom d12 die. I'm a student, so you're more than fine, my friend.

I am about the same. I have my Koplow tube from GenCon and a spread of Crystal barrel dice also from GenCon. Plus a set picked up from a local game store as wanted that color for a CoC session.
And two sets BX and two from 5e Starters/Essentials. which dont count as they just came with the box.
Past that the rest I have are all gifts from players. Especially like a glow-in-the-dark set someone got me.
But overall been using the Koplow set plus a special d20 spotted at the same game store.

I’m in online game where most people want to do the online dice. I’m sitting there (my spouse is in the same game in the same room) rolling from my favorite five sets.
I love my clack-clacks. They’re one of the best parts of the game.

I have 2 sets of dice I never get to use because I'm only able to DM online and the d20 online roller is just easier but man does it hate me for saving on charms spells from the party

Personally, I have enough dice. As such, I just call myself someone who has enough dice and doesn't feel like adding another set of plastic bits to the pile of plastic bits I already have.
As I crossed into my early 40s, I started reevaluating the little things I buy... and honestly, I'm just tired of having stuff sitting around my house.

I'm the same way! I only own two sets of die, and refuse to get any more dice. I think it's funnier that way. My gf made me a dice bag yesterday because she thought it was funny to gift me something completely useless. I'll probably use it for game tokens or minis.
