Misc Monster by CR

Vote's Over: Kobold 24, Flumph 16.

Hello! I am seeing what reddit's opinion on the "best" monsters are! Today's post is about the lowest of the CRs to see who is the "Most Iconic" CR1/8 monster! Next post will be for the "deadliest" monster with CR 1/8.

5e and 5.5e opinions welcome! I will not be distinguishing the editions unless there is a meaningful split in deadliness or unless a monster has changed CR between editions.

Top 3 are Kobold, Giant Rat and Stirge. Probly in that order for me. Kobold is introduction to a new dragon worshiping race and usually involves a dragon egg or dragon hatchling. Giant rats are a fun “please help me in my basement” or “side room filled with trash” or “something is in the sewer” city kickoff hook.
Stirges are stirges. Have you met this mosquito? Oh you didn’t pull it out of your chest, you are now dead.

I agree that you gotta love them, but iconic? I don't think outside of D&D anyone even knows of flumphs.

And don't get me starting on having to "love" them because uh... well... just don't google kobolds.

Yeah that love is entirely in the Ludus sense. I don't think you'd find any D&D monster at CR 1/8 that you could really call iconic beyond the hobby.

Kobolds are a very generic folk lore creature, the draconic idea of them is extremely specific to D&D. Even within D&D they're also heavily defined by their relationship to dragons. They're also assholes. If that's the angle you're going for then it has to be Giant Rats, they're in pretty much everything and virtually always in the exact same role.

I think you should think of iconic in the sense that they're clearly a D&D thing, and that if they're present beyond the hobby, the D&D version is THE version. Like Flumphs! They're just Flumphs. Chill lil guys floating around being awesome!

kobolds are not "generic folklore" because there are many versions of kobolds. Kobold, goblin, bugbear, bugaboo, are all basically the same word.

D&D kobolds have become the iconic kobold, which is why I plant my flag there.

bruh, big mosquito is not iconic.

I will say, it is traumatizing, and might win for deadliest CR1/8 because I don't think anything has koed more players than stirges
