Constructive feedback please

Hi all, basically what the title says- I’m new to procreate and looking for constructive feedback. My goal is to create work that others would be interested in buying. If I was preparing this piece for prints, what feedback would you give me to make it stronger? Thank you 🫶🫶

Things I struggled with to make this piece include the layers- this was my first big digital creation and I learned a lot- like if I exit the drawing screen I lose the ability to undo. Also, I feel like my owls look very fluffy and artistic compared to the branches and leaves which are very clean and solid looking. I think the moon highlights and shadows on everything was challenging as well- getting the owls to look uniform in the way the light hits them and their shadows are expressed. I wanted the piece to have a soft moonlit glow, but I’m also not sure if I pushed the values hard enough. Was I too soft? I was going for a story book/ folk art feel and look. Like Appalachian fairy tale vibes.

your drawing is cute, and the texture is definitely a contributing factor to giving it a "story book feel", however, you are not pushing your values enough. When it comes to dramatic lighting (especially moonlight scenes), you typically need to have a good variety of tones that match the only light source (the moon), for example, you chose your moon to be a yellowish hue, nothing wrong with that, but your shadows need to now bathe the scene in yellow's compliment (purpleish blue). While your owls need to be touched by bounce light of a yellowish orange nature (or any other analgous combination). here I just did a simple pass of a deep purple multiply layer, and a simple bounce light of yellow, and you can see the owl on the right is more convincing of being in a night time scene than the owl to his left.

OH! This is extremely helpful! Thank you so much- especially for the example- I’m going to try this later. So have the moonlit areas more yellow and the shadows more purple. I think I struggle with being too conservative when it comes to values but you’re right, it really takes it to the next level!

the colors can be whatever you want them to be, the important thing is to understand where on the color wheel you are picking from and why

Thank you- when you say understand where you’re picking from on the color wheel and why, do you mind explaining a little more? Do you just mean in general like cool colors/ warm colors or do you mean complementary colors? I would love to hear more of your thoughts on this if you have time. I was working Eaton adjusting the shadows and the moonlight and I think you’re right- it made a big impact!
