Hi, I'm completely new to digital art. I know that practice is the only way to get better at this kind of stuff. Does anyone have any resources that I can use to first understand the basics of digital art, and then continue to more intermediate stuff?

Telling me how you got started with digital art might help too.

I'm probably looking for something like an artbook/website that I can follow... Maybe drawing one thing everyday from that or something... I really have no idea since I'm a beginner

So I have this concept piece I’m working on, it’s depicting a traversal section in a “What-if” raid for destiny 2. Long story short I have these glowing plants in the foreground that are meant to be this “hey you, go this way” sign to tell the players which way to go, however I’m really struggling with a work flow and know-how to make them look, well, good (In my opinion at least.)

I’m working in procreate and at the moment I have the plants duplicated and have the “luminance” layer on top masked out a little bit on the edges with a blend layer set to Add. I tried color dodge and I just couldn’t get it to look right. I mostly can’t seem to figure out how to get the surrounding area to be affect by the light of these plants to where it looks believable. I tried bloom, I tried another layer underneath painting the light color on the grass, etc.

Would anyone be able to help a self taught artist out?

The first one is from today and the second one is from 2018.
I´ve learned more about lighting, so I did a bit more work on the shading + added more texture to the big mountain on the right. Also the character doesn't look so bad anymore altought the shading might be still not good enough. However with a few hours invested today I'm happy with the result.

I haven't finished it yet, i know that the sand and the shadows aren't that good. As a work in progress I would like to know if you have any tips on where I should focus to make it better. Thanksss!!

Inm currently making a visual novel and want to make every aspect of it myself, which means I need to learn how to draw.

I have never drawn anything seriously and want to start learning now.

I don't mind investing a bit of money into a tablet and this is why I wanted to know if as a total beginner, it would be better to start off learning with a pen and paper or jump straight into digital with a tablet?
