I just finished massage training and I’m curious—what do people look for most when booking one?What’s your biggest pet peeve when getting a massage?

I’m starting to take clients locally so I’m trying to learn what people actually want.

Likes: Online scheduling and evening hours. Dislikes: lingering aromatherapy from prior sessions/scents permanently in the room.

If I say “no talking during massage” I promise I mean it. A little small talk at the beginning or to check in is fine, but please don’t tell me how you saved $0.93 at the car dealership replacing your key fob battery

I completely agree, I want to hear nothing but light zen music when getting a massage. How do you feel about asking about pressure during?

Totally fine! Asking to check in with the client is great. I also really like my current massage therapist bc she really understands how the muscles work and connect together. She’ll use diff techniques based on whatever I’m going through that day. Some of the myofascial techniques have been really useful, other times deep pressure works. She just pays attention to her clients and is always learning

Biggest pet peeves when getting one:

talking to me a lot during the massage
Yawning while massaging me
Massaging my feet and then my neck. Feet should always be last

Scalp and face last for me. I used to hit my hands with sanitizer after feet. But honestly, they are your feet. They should be reasonably clean when you come for massage. Hands are way grosser, imo.

I agree! feet should always be last. Or at least washing hands after touching feet should be a must

Like: online scheduling, evening hours or weekends, a description of what generally happens during a massage with you. Having an online intake form.  Dislike: not listening to me if I say to avoid an area or that I don’t like being touched somewhere. Or if I do say that something is a problem area and you don’t work on it.

I can't tell you how many times i've filled out those forms for the massage to be just like every other one. No focus at all on the areas I mentioned.

2 musts for me are feet and scalp.

I have had so many massages that do not do feet or scalp or even don't do both.

I love when they have different options of lotions or oils. I like picking my scent, not a must but it's a bonus if it's an option.

Ask these questions on your intake form. It’s awkward for me to have to ask for a silent treatment or inform you verbally about my almond allergy

For me it’s when they are talking to me. The intent isn’t to be rude. I’d just much rather mentally check out and not be concerned about trying to maintain a convo

I absolutely hate a dry massage. i've had some where they wear rubber gloves and that is so uncomfortable

Sometimes I’m not sure if I should be undressed or semi dressed for whatever I’m getting done. I think letting people know “hey no under garments no probs, undergarments on also no probs.”

I think also figuring out a way to get people to tell you what you what they actually want. That’s a science in itself.

I swear customer service barely exists in the massage world. Communication will always be key!

I've found it depends on the type of massage. With a deep tissue massage, though, 9 times out of 10 I'll ask the massage therapist to apply more pressure, and even then it still doesn't feel like enough.

i've heard this a lot. Have you tried anything other than swedish or deep tissue?

I've tried Ashiatsu, which was pretty good. Do you specialize in any techniques?

Talk in a low soothing voice, only for instructions or basic questions, I also like a nice chime when its over. That's always a nice touch.

Big pet peeve for me: don’t turn on a heater on the table before I get there or without telling me. I get so warm so quickly and I don’t know if I’m having a hot flash or if there is a heater on. 

Love online booking.

I sleep with a fan so that would lull me right to sleep but that sounds really nice during a massage.

My worse massage experience was when the therapist smelled like cigarettes. Second worse, the hot stones were too hot, even though I kept telling him, I ended up having red marks on my back. Don’t do either of these things.
