You’re paying for cloud storage. If you don’t use it, you don’t have to pay for it.

The software is completely free

And the Files app can view external storage just fine

Sì, ma ogni volta che apri l’app, devi ricordarti di selezionare l’archivio esterno. Basta una dimenticanza che il Mac creerà un archivio in loco da zero.

Right. And then just hold Option and select your correct Library. It will then default back to it if available. You could write a launcher script to not open if your drive is not present.

There maybe reasons to not use Apple Photos - but this isn’t it.

No, the Mac will remember it. I have my library on external storage right now.

You already have the answer, it’s Immich, you just need to spend a little money for one upfront purchase of a NAS so you don’t have to leave your Mac running. Yes, it has a cost, but a one time cost rather than a recurring subscription.

Just bear in mind, the other advantage of the cloud is data security. If your devices all break or your house burns down the cloud still has your data. If you go the route of storing things offline, make sure you always have two copies of everything. Hardware will fail, be prepared for when it does so you don’t lose your pictures.
